Hi all, I'm a PMDG tech team member and real life 737 pilot. In this tutorial we will conduct a circle to land - or circling approach.
Few things to consider: The PMDG 737 at present has a bug that prevents it from precisely maintaining altitude at low speeds. Normally you'd have to maintain the circling minimum precisely on crosswind, downwind and base until you have the landing runway and PAPIs in sight. I accepted the altitude variations in this tutorial because I knew the PMDG was unable to maintain the altitude precisely. So just put this down to a sim'ism.
Also VNAV ALT Mode tried to reinitiate a descend after I set the missed approach altitude. If that happens in your simulator press ALT HOLD to maintain your altitude.
If you like my videos please consider a small donation as it's taking a lot of time and effort to create these.

These tutorials are not designed as absolute beginner tutorials. It is expected that the viewer already has basic experience with airliners and knows the basics how to operate an aircraft.
Instead these tutorials will focus on the 737NG as an aircraft and the particularities of how to operate it.

Very good tip on adding 90 degrees to determine the track after creating a new waypoint.. Brilliant video. Well done NG DRIVER.

I really enjoy your tutorials with the 737. I would like to see one on how to divert to a different airport for whatever reason, like an airport closing while in route or something. I would like to see what actions you take with the FMC and the auto pilot to get the plane there.

Hey man, amazing video as usual. Really love your videos and it has been a treat to watch! Just a small suggestion, could you record at a higher bit rate so that when you pan, things don't go blurry? Please keep these videos coming. The community appreciates your knowledge and insights :)

Thanks a million for these videos. One issue I ran into which you may have covered and I might have missed - if you're using an instrument approach and trying to create the 4 mile waypoint the FMC isn't a fan if there are any waypoints between the runway and 4 miles out. I kept getting an "INVALID ENTRY" error and after a bit of fiddling around figured out I need to first delete the waypoints within 4 miles in order to create this new waypoint. If there is an easier way to accomplish this I would love to know. It is easier to just use the "RWXX" approach but, like you said, I really like the idea of being able to fly a visual approach with published missed approach guidance available.
@A330Driver
@A330Driver Год назад
How do you create the waypoint? Use the RWXX option in the FMC and then enter 4NM and the 3 degree angle. The waypoint is then created for you.
@spensers.4249
@spensers.4249 Год назад
@@A330Driver In this case I'm creating the waypoint by having an instrument approach already loaded in the FMC and then clicking the LSK for the runway waypoint and then adding /-4 and I get the error when inserting it if there is already an established waypoint from the instrument approach that is within 4 miles of the RW waypoint. I can just delete that final waypoint from the legs page and then the "/-4" waypoint inserts just fine.

You said sops for npa apply to the visual approach, but at approaching descent instead of setting mcp altitude to minimums you set in immediately to maa (5000ft). Shouldn’t it have been: mda 600ft set, vnav path speed intv…and then wait until you’re at top of the white bar to set maa 5000ft? Sorry but I’m just wondering which way is right now 😂 thanks a lot

Is there any way that you can insert the missed approche procedure manually to the route? Übrigends finde ich es sehr gut, dass du alles schön ausführlich erklärst.

Kind of an odd question but I was on vatsim today and was descending into KPHX with the fenix A320. Had filed for an ILS approach but was given a visual approach instead which was fine since it was clear in the day. The question I have is as I was approaching closer and closer to the airport the controller wasn’t giving me vectors towards the runway and I was flying into the opposite end of the runway and ATC was curious as to why I was heading into another direction but I was also not given any heading instructions to help me downwind, base, or final. Am I supposed to vector myself for those traffic patterns or was the controller supposed to guide me to get the field in sight?
@BaptiseLeGrand
@BaptiseLeGrand Год назад
The answer might be a little late, and maybe you've figured it yourself by now, but yes, you are entirely self-positioning once cleared for a visual.

Good video. But why would you be cleared for a visual in a destination RWY with working ILS?
@A330Driver
@A330Driver 2 года назад
As I explained at the beginning of the video, you can consider a visual if a significant time saving can be achieved. I didn't check the PROG page for the time saving in our example, but for sure we saved at least 3 or 4 minutes compared to flying the full arrival and ILS.

Hi, can I ask please, why didn't vnav attempt to climb when you set the miss approach alt to 5000? Since no approach mode is being used, I though VNAV will just follow whatever alt is set in the mcp? I vaguely remember when I set my miss approach alt too early (before established with loc) the plane pitched up and started to climb.

Excellent video and landing (practice make perfect, right ? :) Can you share your view on flight model of pmdg 737 in the sim. Other real 737 pilot/streamer said its not that great- more like Airbus not Boeing meaning too stable. Is that correct ?
@A330Driver
@A330Driver 2 года назад
See my review for details about the flightmodel. Regarding people saying it flies to stable, I know what they mean but I think that's an underlying issue with the sim itself. The real airplane will often try to deviate from your flightpath due to external influences like gusts, thermals, etc. MSFS hardly models those effects on the airplane. That's why it'll feel more stable while indeed it's more a missing feature of the simulator itself than something of the flightmodel of the 737.

My thoughts about visual approach prior to watching this video: Well, just look outside and try to find the runway. Then try to land there as best as you can. I am probably wrong...
@A330Driver
@A330Driver 2 года назад
There surely are airlines doing it that way. There's a very good reason why my airline has an excellent safety record however. Now of course I'm not saying that it's unsafe to use different SOPs, not at all, but having a structured concept is very important. If you find a way that works for you, perfect.

When in VNAV, why were you able to change the selected altitude to the GA alt. I though VNAV PATH respected the selected altitude as a restriction.
@A330Driver
@A330Driver Год назад
It does, but when it's on approach mode (happens automatically, see my VNAV dedicated video) then you can select a higher altitude and it will continue the descend.

Can u do a video using FPA on final fix to the runway for the pmdg 737? Thanks.
@A330Driver
@A330Driver 2 года назад
The 737 doesn't have an FPA mode, all you got is V/S. You'll have to check the charts for the V/S required for the approach depending on your ground speed.

after i set up my route i constantly get a message saying drag request after Feks (IPNUS) what does this mean? I just recently started trying to fly the boeing 737 never liked it cause i think the system is so complicated compared to the airbus so i'm sorry if the question is obvious lol
@A330Driver
@A330Driver 2 года назад
It means that you'll have to add drag to your aircraft after that waypoint. Most likely because the descend is steeper than what the 737 can do in clean configuration. So either use speed brakes or enter an airspeed at that waypoint that enables you to get the flaps out.
@Neo-je4bi

At what distance from the airport should be reached the reference speed?
@A330Driver
@A330Driver 2 года назад
By the stable gate, so 500ft in VMC and 1000ft in IMC. Take the according distances for the glide path of your approach procedure.

Hi, I am starting on the runway, open full throttle, and when 140 knots hits, I pull up the yoke, but the plane never takes off. other planes don’t have this problem, I’m just having this problem with pmdg 737. Is this a bug? Or is it done consciously? and also lnav and vnav are not working. any tips ?

My first and foremost tip is to read the manuals and watch my tutorial videos. The "issues" you describe sound a lot like you're doing something pretty wrong. I'd recommend to start with the basics and the manuals and work your way up from there.
