I've changed how to use my smartphone lately. I always turn on its airplane mood and turn off three times per day, 12pm, 5pm and 9pm. I realized that I had spoiled my priceless time reading a large number of meaningless articles.. It's awful. I should have spent time something that improve my life or strengthen my abilities such as going jogging, working out, reading books and so on. In addition, I don't use my smartphone when I'm with others even family or close friends. I try to focus on the precious time with them.
This is gold. I thank God for your existence, Brian. I am a better person (even a better Christian) since I've found you. You remind me of the old puritans I'm reading (books from the 1600's). They had a pretty practical view of life, and have given advise on almost everything in a very practical way (look for "A Christian Directory" and "The Christian Daily Walk in Holy Security and Peace" and you will get why I said that). I am working on my budget so I can subscribe to your membership program (I'm Brazillian... It is cheap for Americans, but not so much for us). Thank you for all your free stuff!
I believe that the constant zombie like staring at social media feeds is a problem. However to announce to the world that you dont use the internet is akin to saying you dont read. In moderation it's an incredible tool, that in the past week alone taught me how to change a toilet, the proper PH level for my tomatoes, how to create a homemade salsa, pickle some cukes and hot peppers and make a true southern fried chicken. Additionally, i'm able to educate myself through distance learning from programs like this.
Completely agree!! Did I say I don't use the Internet? lol. If so, my bad. Meant to say I strive not to use it for non-essential things and avoid being an addicted rat. Thanks for helping clarify. High fives and Happy Monday! :) -bri
@@HeroicBrian I dont believe you did. My apologies for insinuating that. I appreciate you sharing this message this morning. Thank you for sharing your content. My reply wasnt intended to be negative/critical. Thanks Brian!
Great video Brian. I like the idea of 100 smart people against me. That's a strong image to refuse the battle by staying away from technologies (when better things need to be done).
I was enjoying your emails until I heard you say that you no longer do email and only go online for mission critical reasons BECAUSE YOU HAVE A STAFF TO DO THAT. So it's ok for them to spend a dozen or more hours a day getting pickled by the internet and technology as long as you don't have to?
Yes, and... No, sir! Yes, I'm blessed to have a team that helps with the email so I don't have to. AND... No, our staff doesn't spend "a dozen or more hours a day getting pickled by the internet and technology as long as I don't have to." ;) We all train our attention and manage technology as much as we can. Cal Newport will actually be talking about how we strive to manage our biz with minimal email in his next book "A World Without Email." For example, we don't use email for inter-Team communication and have hard-stop digital sunsets and shut-down completes and a target of at least 3 hours of Deep (zero input) Work blocks per day, etc. Obviously, the constraints of reality dictate trade offs and we continue to explore the best ways to do that! With respect even via this channel which tends to bring out the worst in people. ;)
