PROGRAM NOTES
Pocket Grooves is designed with “small" in mind. The pieces are short and require small hand-held instruments for the percussionist while they also focus on simple harmony and simple melody. While these pieces present incredible challenges for the bassoonist, they are aesthetically light in nature and designed to celebrate three different traditional styles of music in the world (Joropo from Venezuela, Samai from the Middle East, and Choro from Brazil).
Pocket Grooves was written for bassoonist Jefferson Campbell to be premiered at the 2015 IDRS conference in Tokyo, Japan. It was a request for a companion piece to Get It!, another one of my works for bassoon and percussion. Campbell asked for the same compositional approach here - a challenging work for the bassoon that stems from the “popular" music idiom and is accessible to a wide range of audiences. The three movements in Pocket Grooves may be performed in any order and may be combined with Get It! to create a four-movement suite.

I still remember seeing this at camp. An amazing piece that was a total joy to hear in Weber.

I've been wanting to learn Pandeiro for a while now but haven't found much of a practical application. This is super nice man, bassoon is an underappreciated instrument

I agree, and Jeff (the bassoonist would certainly agree). I'm in the same boat, I love this instruments, I'm a novice at it, but look for opportunities to play the instrument when I can.

I think bassoon already gets considerable appreciation, especially in an orchestral context

Friction - middle finger slides against the head with the right amount of pressure

I'm told that technique of a snare roll sounding is accomplished by "beeswax and moisture". I see the quick finger licks. I take it the beeswax is on the tam skin ?? Doesn't that dampen the whole instrument ? What kind of skin is this , or for that matter, what is the tamborine ?

Now, just the right amount of pressure, but yes some use beeswax on the head to help get the proper friction. Just a tiny bit of wax, it won't dampen the head. The pandeiro is a Remo choro pandeiro, synthetic skin, so it's easy to manipulate and it sounds great (very nice bass sound)

In your description, you say "the 'popular' music idiom" as if there were one idiom to the non-Western classical set of styles. Probably just a typo, but thought I'd point it out anyhow.
