I'd like to know if there are any alternatives to antipsychotic medication in bipolar disorder. I hate my husband being on them but his manic episodes are really scary! The drugs seemed to have dampened this down somewhat but made him pretty lifeless and emotionally detacbed.

I also recall being in serviced on "pain is whatever the patient says it is" and then the opioid epidemic happens and all the elderly now can't have pain meds, and/or they switched meds to use the side effects, i.e. Depakote, Neurotion, it's a game with people. Sad part is you get them good on a med and then you must do a drug reduction and try to get rid of it. When it fails you're allowed to restart, in my experience the second time isn't as effective. MD's can keep up with all the rules put on them.

Being a mother to a Schizophrenic son I try to follow every bit of information out there. As much as my son is engulfed with support and love it's a never ending cycle of hospitals, terrible treatments and meds, stopping all treatments and relapsing. I have yet to meet a doctor or therapist who will be able to convince him to have a patience span of over a year to gradually decrease the doses. Resetting your brain is a wonderful idea but how can someone do it when they can barely carry a conversation or get out of bed? I'm talking about a boy that is (was?) highly intelligent, a leader who when still in high school was selected to serve in our "top gun" unit. The best takeaway for me as the CEO of a biotech company is that clinical trials are a rarely reliable and the best practice is to gather "survivors" data but how do we overcome strict regulations and government policies?

Have you looked at reaching out to Holistic Naturapaths? They might be able to point you in the right direction in terms of natural medications and then looking at getting some sort of therapy CBT maybe? I hope you find the help you both need :/

This is what I was diagnosed with. Chemical imbalance. The reason I almost don’t want to hear this is bc. What is the alternative. What do I do then. If I wean off antidepressants which hasn’t work ive always gone back on them. I hate them. But what is the answer for us?

Been a nurse for almost 40 years, mostly geriatric care, psych doc told me once, we basically use a dart board with meds. Personally I have watched insurance companies rule the world. So many thoughts here.

Good discussion. Have you, Dr. Leaf, or anyone else on the panel, considered the affects of parasites in mental/emotional imbalances? They behave like bacteria and rib the body and brain of nutrients needed for proper brain function.

@@lizdennett9002 the body repairs its self continuously. I used to have very bad IBS (caused by stress, food sensitivities, candida, pathogens, chemical). I had to change what I ate, use herbs to rebalance microbiome and reduce pathogens in order to regulate my digestion. Consider getting the help of a nutritionist (holistic health practitioner). When my digestions was restored, my immune system was able to improve. My anxiety was removed, my sleep was better, my depression was also eliminated. Also, many other little chronic symptoms went away. I'm calmer, more optimistic and can handle stress. Mind management techniques help greatly. The body wants to heal, it knows how to heal. We must eliminate the 'toxins' and 'replace' nutrients that are depleted.....then the body does the rest.

This was fascinating and, hopefully, empowering. Perhaps it ties in with Johann Hari's work on why depression (and addiction) are so prevalent?

I think the public is getting more in love with the idea that everything has a genetic basis. Gene tests and screenings all the rage. Not to mention so few know about epigenetics

Great podcast, but informed consent is not law. Look at how pervasive it is for medical students to perform non-consensual pelvic exams. Informed consent is an idea, but you can’t sue if there is no legal precedent that is being broken unfortunately.

I have suffered with anxiety, panic and OCD since I was seven years old. I have done extensive cognitive therapy with great results. I could not live without the small amount of meds I am on. This whole podcast is so very very very sad!!! A lot of info no help!!!! So typical of people who study study study but have not suffered themselves. What a waste of my hour and eleven minutes.

They did reveal the solution. Identify your emotional/mental triggers and work on neutralizing them. I will add too, focus on the present moment and what you are doing rather than let your mind run away. You have the solution in you. Try to relax and lose yourself in things you love to do. That really helps me. All the best to you, no one needs to suffer

I have suffered with this myself and so so respect your opinion. However, reason why ppl don't get better is loss of hope. I have done so much better without a single dose of med. I will say has not been easy but it is fully up to the individual it takes alot of will and determination and patience with ourselves to do it without meds. Once again it's different for everyone idk your situation but alot of this is so true btw I also worked in medical field and root causes are not treated it's all meds and its really sad.
