I'm a video producer and I've always felt I could get more out of Audition since I'm not really a sound guy. To make matters more interesting, I've been asked to produce a podcast so I've had to dive head first into Audition. In general, your channel has been a Godsend, but after my first more-or-less real world 3-mic test (yes in English but with my kids as unenthusiastic 'guests') I found these two very problems. Great to wake up this morning to a notification to this on-point tutorial. Thank you! Oh, and coffee for me, please.

Mike, great video. I'm a relative novice and testing Audition. Learned a lot from you. One question about your process here. On my podcast, I mix down separate tracks to a single mono file. Instead of applying delete silence feature to polywave files, wouldn't it just make more sense for me to mix down the tracks and apply the delete silence feature to the mono track? Is there a disadvantage to doing it that way?

Just starting a podcast for my association and finding your tutorials incredibly helpful! A challenge for me is getting good audio recorded. We will invest in a Scarlett 2i2 for two inputs as the format is most often going to be host and one guest. I can't find answers to simple questions, like with each mic record on a separate track, whether I'm recording in Audacity or Audition?
@MikeRussell
@MikeRussell 3 года назад
If you're recording in Audition you can use the multi track and assign the two channels to separate tracks in the multi track which will make for better editing

@MikeRussell
@MikeRussell 6 месяцев назад
Thank you for your kind words! To prevent echo when two speakers speak at the same time, it's best to have both microphones positioned closely to each speaker and set up a noise gate to automatically mute the microphone not in use during recording. Keep the questions coming, happy to help!

Nice work :) Didn't know about the polywave track. Curious to hear how the deleted silences sound; obviously would be impacted by settings and all. I generally avoid using a gate for the silences because it wants to start triggering a little bit on breaths where they inhale but it's not quite enough to trigger the gate but it's halfway getting cut out and sounds awkward. Then lightening up how aggressive it is just ends up leaving a little too much. Will try again with some of your tips from this video.

Thanks Thom. You're right that it's a fine art to setup a gate and it does crush those breaths for sure!

Hey Mike. Thanks a lot for this video. I'm not sure if I've looked over it or not, but do you have an in depth video on how to tweak the attack, release and hold of the AutoGate? I've been playing around with it a bit and have found some explanation online but I still can't get my head around how these three buttons work. I'm able to filter out the mic bleed, but the main voice in the respective tracks always kind of gets choppy. Thanks i.a.!
@MikeRussell

It sounds like the mic bleed and certain parts of the main voice are of similar amplitude. You may wish to try upping the hold and / or the attack figures.

Thank you Mike! This was really helpful! I was wondering if you can only use the polywave to edit podcasts? Seems like it's much easier to work with rather than a multi-track.
@MikeRussell
@MikeRussell 4 года назад
I wouldn't advice it as it is destructive (meaning you're making edits direct to the audio file that cannot be undone). Backup your audio, do this process, then do the rest non-destructively in multitrack. Someone already mentioned you could actually setup gates in multitrack too.

Great video Mike, it saves me a lot of time when working on my podcast. My only question is after I got rid of the background sound in wave form, when I play the clip in multitrack, the background noise in multitrack is much higher than in wave form. How do I fix this?
@MikeRussell
@MikeRussell 2 года назад
Multitrack will only alter the audio using any effects you’ve added to the effects rack. The ideal is to record in a good recording environment without background noise but before you process your recording you’ll need to remove the background noise otherwise your effects rack effects will enhance it

@georgiema4710
@georgiema4710 3 года назад
This is amazing! The silence hack was pretty cool. I tried the the mic bleed for a couple of multitracks I had talking at the same time but I found it also cut out some of the conversation from the speaker. I tried playing around with it but I couldn't get it to only cut the bleed out - any further tips would be appreciated. Thank you.
@MikeRussell
@MikeRussell 3 года назад
I'd suggest you post an unedited sample in our community community.musicradiocreative.com/ but in short if the mic bleed is louder than the quietest part of the talking on the track itself then you can't eradicate it easily

Hey Mike, thanks for all your work! As I'm just getting into podcasting, you're a life saver. Probably a noob question, when deleting silence does it matter that the audio files aren't sync'd? I saw you can load them separately in multi track but didn't know if they needed to be sync'd ahead of that or if doing it in multi track is still appropriate.
@anthonybreedlove1552
@anthonybreedlove1552 2 года назад
Also, is it normal for the process to take a long time? Sometimes when a process is resource taxing Audition will go into 'Not Responding limbo' but usually catches up fairly quick. This is the only process that stays in that 'limbo' state.
@MikeRussell
@MikeRussell 2 года назад
If you are deleting silences across multiple files it's better to combine them into a poly wave and let Audition delete the silences that way.
@LinguistAccessTutorialOnline

I'll definitely try all of this next week when editing my podcast! Thank you so much 🙌 The polywave will work great if all tracks are in sync. How should I approach it if I record audio remotely with my guest and we clearly did not hit Record at the same time? Thanks!
@MikeRussell
@MikeRussell 3 года назад
Fortunately with audio you get the audible and visible so it's often easiest so align the tracks roughly first using the voices and then expand the waveforms and use them as a visual reference to align perfectly.

Thanks again man. I swear, if my channel takes off, you will be the first RU-vidr I will donate to. I am basically recording in my room, so I do not have advanced equipment, but my audio is freaking 1000000 times better. And i only watched 2 of your videos!!!!!!!!
