As a "cooked" vegan, I've held the raw diet in disdain for about a decade. I recently gave it a 6 week shot and it's been transformative. I've had to really eat humble lettuce. The postive impact on my health and weight has been as intense as the shift from the carnist to vegan.

Although I have an innate skepticism surrounding most professional 'nutritionists', Dr. Greger is a notable exception. That is due in large measure to his reliance on science-based evidence.

It is good to find a M.D. who practices real Health Care instead of only Sick Care! Now that spring is here I can start eating my yard salads again. I am 72 and i don’t use any prescription medications. Some years ago I was dx’d with a form of rheumatoid arthritis and prescribed a drug that costs thousands of dollars each month. I was and still am a vegetarian. I use the VA for my sick care and every 6 months i get a check up. Yeah, I started doing calorie restriction or fasting in early 2020, because my doctor told me that I was prediabetic. I lost 92 pounds in 18 months. I lowered my blood sugar and got out of the prediabetic zone! I also ended up feeling really good about myself. I thought that I would be fat all my life and I was happy to achieve a healthy weight according to BMI. I think that if more doctors or health care professionals told people about calorie restriction and what their healthy BMI weight is then a lot of people would be more focused on maintaining a healthy weight, diet, nutrition and exercise.

I think it's interesting if the low occurrence of cancers in middle east could be connected to their regular fasting (ramadan). I've heard studies were also made back in ussr on christian orthodox fasting and its relation to cancer but haven't found any. Lots of the interesting science they made might have been lost or could be sitting somewhere in archives. It's particularly interesting because people in middle east are not thinnert than elsewhere so if fasting itself could provide health benefits regardless of weight loss.

I suffered with regular (twice weekly) migraines for 10 years. Switched to organic plant based oil free after 5 years of suffering and it didn’t stop them or decrease them. Last year I also started intermittent fasting, and they were reduced to once per month immediately. After about 3 months I added a probiotic and fermented foods daily, and now they’re happening even less. Looking back they began around the time I was suffering with tonsillitis, and I was given antibiotics over a period of about a year. I think they damaged my gut and the fasting plus the addition of good bacteria from probiotics and fermented foods has helped my gut to heal. I should add that over the years I did several extended fasts of 2-3 days, and they did nothing for the migraines.

I can see how if you are not used to fasting you might get a headache, but if you build up your tollerance to fasting over time, I don't think this is an issue for most people and headaches will likely improve as your body gets used to not needing a glucose fix every few hours and atophogy clears out a good amount of zombie cells over time.

If you’re already on a plant based vegan diet, can fasting help you? How to fast safely and deal with acidosis and uric acid?
@garyfookins9968
@garyfookins9968 2 года назад
You're already starving yourself from 15 essential nutrients by not eating animals. Your intuition is correct, fasting/starving yourself is not healthy and shouldn't be done, especially when already starving yourself on a vegan diet. You can continue to trust a man who looks like a living corpse for nutrional advice or you can try trusting your own eyes. Look up "vegans the Epitome of Malnourished" series. Keep an open mind, you're on this journey for your health and the health of those you care about.

I know the book talks about the 5day fast doing it with the kit that you can order but it’s so expensive I wonder if it’s worth it. Is saw a video on Plant Chompers about it and I wasn’t so sure. Let me know if you have any wisdom or opinions to share! Thanks for the book recommendation! 💚

I'd like to know to what charities do you give the proceedings from your books. Is it third party charities or charities founded by you related to health treatments? I wish it was the latter and that these charities would be health resorts, with fasting treatments and plant-based education such as True North Health Centre. Places such as this should be multiplied and treatments made free for those who can't afford the fees. As is it is, these life -saving treatments are only a dream to the majority of people and I consider them an elite's priviledge. I have been wanting to be treated at True North for a long time but my financial situation does not permit me to. I bought all your books and their books but what's the use? I don't have the will power to do it on my own and would need professional help. Just as a drug addict or an alcoholic needs rehabilitation treatment and cannot be expected to overcome their addiction by themselves, so does a food-addicted person.

Dr. Greger’s example makes it sound like all fats (even olive oil) are dangerous on this issue of fatty organs, so I wonder what amount of fat is safe to aide digestion. Can a low calorie diet with some good fat still create the fat-sucking effect from our organs? I believe he said a 25% reduction in calories would be good, but what about any fats, oils, I wonder?

Never break a long fast (5+ days) with anything acidic, such as lemons, limes, plums, grapes, or grapefruits. Your stomach will lose the ability temporarily for a day or two dealing with acidic foods. That's probably the most important thing. I prefer breaking long fasts with bananas or Avocados.

Wow!!!! Who is Dr. Greger??? This Dr. saying that high fat diets cause insulin resistance and type-2 diabetes is crazy. This man has a weird cadence in his speaking, but that's nothing compared to his bizarre explanations. I just heard him for the second time, and think he's a nut vegetarian posing as a nutritionist... Even most of us novice nutritionists understand that the biggest cause of diabetes is undoubtedly a lifestyle of frequent feeding and a diet rich in high-carbs & sugars and that fat has no insulin effects... And, we know that the practice of intermittent fasting paired with a low carb/high fat(saturated and omega 3) diet reverses metabolic syndrome and diabetes. This so-called Dr. is out of step with good Dr.s like Jamnadas, Fung, Lustig, Ekberg, Berg, and Gundry. Don't listen to him!
