"Now, if you could consistently hit yourself, that would be great..." Such positive attitudes throughout are the best part. Learning from Nick is so easy, fun, and encouraging:)
This definitely is by far THE BEST explanation of a five beat weave I have ever seen. I've been spinning for more than three years and I'm stuck in mediocrity. This has been one thing I've never been able to master and I'd written it off as impossible for me. This video has definitely given me a new look at this move and I'm ready to try again! Keep it up!! :)
This video was extremely helpful! Been trying to do the 5-beat for a month or two now...watched this video several times this evening and suddenly understand the mechanics of this move! Thank you very much!
The overhead view here is really helpful, as is the focus on hand movements without the poi. I had reached the point where I was 'catching' one of my arms, but couldn't figure out whether that was right or not. Your catch'n'lead explanation made it fall into place. Thanks!
WOW. You are...THE MAN!!! Your videos are amazing. Please keep them coming. After watching this video I immediately learned how to do the 5 beat weave. I could never understand the concept for the 5 beat weave before this. Thank you very much man!!! I love poi!!!
I just wanted to let you all know, i have been working on this dang 5 beat weave for like a month now, after watching video once i got it!!!! It still took another 2 hours of practicing after but i got it!!!! Thanks for much, Thumbs up!!!
This is the first video I have watched where I GET what's happening. Using fingers only first with the right leading and pointing the way really helped me grasp what is going on. Most of the time I feel like a cat watching a ball of string lol. Thank you.
You really are amazing at describing the moves and breaking it down into a bunch of helpful "stepping stones" that help so much with learning the move. I just got the forward three-beat weave last night and I'm going to work on this one soon, though I think I'm going to figure out backwards 2 and 3 beat weaves first.
Thank you! This is an awesome video. When I first started playing with poi I did the 5-beat weave naturally. Then my friends showed me the 3-beat and I totally lost the 5-beat. I love how you show your hand movements from above. So it looks like from the perspective of the person spinning. It makes it so much easier to follow along. Mahalo!
I have been able to do the seven beat weave for a while now and never even thought about doing the nine, but after watching this video, I tried it and now know it. Its awesome! You inspired me, thank you!
I think you are a great teacher. For now i was just watching video, not trying to do this. But finally after long time i UNDERSTAND how this is happening. It was a black magic for me at first. I bet, that thanks to your video i will learn this very quickly. I can imagine, it's pretty amazing, that after all those years, your video still helping people to learn poi dance. Greetings from Poland ;)
WOW I really wish I would have learned this with the 3beat...You're totally right, muscle memory is a crazy thing! I consider myself "intermediate" but this took me nearly 3 hours of constant drilling to get halfway decent at. It really humbled me! The bit with the "catching the wrists" was what finally helped it click. I can peacefully go to sleep now... :) Cleaning it up is tomorrow's plan! Thanks Nick!!!
Great tutorial! I have been trying to figure this out forever and no other tutorials worked. This one was so clear though that I figured it out in about 20 minutes!
I waited soooo long before learning the backward 5 beat weave, but now I finally started to get it right. He is absolutely right, if you wait too long it will be really hard to break the 3 beat pattern. Thanks Nick! :)
I've been trying to get this for at least six months. I watched three videos today that I watched a long time ago to try and see if I could finally get it. Your video was the third and the moment you said that "in a three beat weave, your left crosses first... in a five beat, your right will" that was it. I got it!!! YEAH!!! Now to translate that to hoops. :S Thank you!!!
I'm playing poi casually since November now and i just love your videos :) I have to learn it all by myself, because I don't know anyone else playing poi and I am at a point where I can hardly learn about videos anymore, because they either show basics or don't explain the moves good enough to let me repeat them. Today it took 2 hours of practicing the 5-beat-weave (hell, my wrists hurt that much because of the wristflipping) but finally it made "crack" and it now it works! Thank you so much :)
I discovered this move totally by accident yesterday just messing around.. all of a sudden I was doing it, but now I can't get with it again... thank you for the break down.. always so helpful... I could watch you do the back in time bit over and over btw... :)
Amazing video. Somehow you have the magic to make hard concepts easy to understand. Thank you for guiding me through the difficulties when learning poi.
Amazing!!!!!!!No question these are really great, helpful videos!! Took me a couple of tries before getting the 5 beat weave! You are truly a great teacher!! Thaannnnnnnnnkkkkkkkksssss!!!!
wow, you make it look so simple!!! im just starting with poi and would love to learn to dance with the fire one day, not any day soon, lol!!! love your sweater i have one just like it. thank you very much for braking everything down for the beginers, you just rock!!!
You said my exact problem - I waited a year to learn the 5-beat and now my motor skills have set and I find it really difficult. Hopefully this tutorial will help. Thanks Nick!
You guys are why I love poi so much [: Most of my friends that spin son't live near me (like 2 hours away) and so i'm never exposed to new poi and when I find a new trick or stumble upon a concept with the poi that I want to find something to make of it I just go to your page and you have something for it! You explain everything so well and so thouroughly I usually get it right away! You guys are the best :D
Amazing, I've been struggling with this move for a while now, and although at the time i thought the pointing with the hands and practicing how the wrists fit together was silly, I can see that it REALLY did help. Thanks a ton nick
i can do the 5 beat weave perfectly....learned it from this video and polished it up and i am satisfied. Just keep watching this video it will click sooner or later.
An absolutely great explanation. I am interested in trying this out with signal whips-we shall see if I can modify the movements enough. Thanks for posting this.
Best video for learning the 5b weave I've found so far. Still haven't figured it out but I got monkey fists with think steel chains to play with and the 5b tires me out quickly. Thanks for these fun videos dude.
wow all i can say this is the best vid ever! u got me doing the 5 beat wave in no time, im still learning the 3 beat back wave and i just got the 5 beat on my 2nd try :) Thank you
Videos are always helpful. I've onlu been spinning for a little over a month now and playpoi has been a big help. Thanks and hope you keep making videos. Ps. I hope to attend a retreat next year
Great explanation and teaching method. I got it in like five minutes. (but I've just spend lot of time learning 4beat corkscrew and it's useful for 5beat weave too). Thank you.
holy crap I've been doing poi for only 2 months going on 3 and learned only about 10 things in total. i can do 3 beat like in my sleep and i couldn't figure out how to do 5 this video got me to do it in 3 tries O.o thank you so much meenik!!
Woohoo.. These were moves I got to (not intending it) when I was bored in my room over the last years. Never been able to understand the explanations on websites or whatever, this video would have been really helpful. I mean... I really feel the way you see poi is similar to mine, which I love cause I always have to treat with "squared" people. So, nice video, Nick. Always help me keep doing things!
you are utterly cool... mastered this today after watching the vid, you break down movements wonderfully! Wish I had enough money to go to poi love camp in the alps!! aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah
Love your videos and instructions. Love the different camera angles. Any chance we could get a few minutes of you spinning the 5-beat weave slowly without stopping from the different camera angles. Going back to the 3-beat weave multiple times is confusing and I just want to bonk you on the head with a poi. Stick to the 5-beat in all it’s glory.
IT WAS THE FOLLOW ME'S!!!! Follow the left to the left and the right to the right! It makes sense and I've Got it!!!! Finally!!!! *big huggles for Nick* xx Crycan
I really like how you analyse the moves and show the directions and flow of the move. I am really new to poi and just tackled 3 beat. you make it look so terribly easy!!!!!!!!!! haha :) I've been trying 5 beat for a while but have managed to do a 5 on the right and a three on the left LOL. I see what i do wrong now though so i will hopefully have a succesfull go next time :) thnx for this vid and taking the time to explain! :D
