This should seriously be a ballet! It has everything it needs a storyline, costumes, characters, music, etc. sure you could tweak some things but this would actually be a such a fun ballet

The choreography was done by Peter Martins (ex NYCB), you can definitely tell because it's fast and has a lot of Balanchine inspired choreography. The piece playing when Rowena has to dance forever is Tarantella (Gottschalk), another Balanchine work.

Please do Barbie and the Pink Shoes!! It's a more recent ballet movie, so it might be a bit more accurate pointe shoe wise. And there's a few different ballets in there.

Much of the music is based on Mendelssohn's work, as well as the theme being an arrangement of Ancient Airs. One of my in-laws composed & arranged the music for this and won an Emmy for the end credits song Shine. I totally freaked out when I found this out! I agree that this absolutely should be a ballet. The main theme alone just makes me want to dance. This came out when I was in high school and i still unashamedly love it. Watching the BTS videos of the motion capture is super interesting too

What a sweet reaction video! The small feet are truly just for animation, think how many characters have proportionally huge heads. As someone who grew up watching Barbie movies, especially this one, I love seeing you review them! I do believe something was made abt the dancers behind this movie specifically. Don't bother with the newer ones, assuming any even have ballet, tho, they avoid anything that could be seen as mildly intense (ie poison or girls being cursed as swans) and are thus only interesting to their very young target audience. I doubt they'd even spend the money for accurate ballet, or such pretty musical compositions

My oldest daughter was obsessed with this movie. When I got pregnant with my youngest she suggested Genevieve as the name after the lead in this movie. Fast forward a few months and I forgot she said it and suggested Genevieve for the baby. The baby ( now 14 ) is named Genevieve and has been dancing ballet for 7 yrs. The 29th of this month is her Danceversary. Genevieve definitely suits her as she is my Dancing Princess 👸 🩰💖

These movies are so iconic! I watched so many of these growing up, and I loved the ballet ones the most. I didn't commit to ballet till I was 12 but still loved them. Turning 18 in 2 weeks, I think 17-18 year olds are the youngest to be able to fully appreciate the older more iconic Barbie movies. They are old, so we all remember them being newer and fun. Love theses reaction videos and I hope to see more!

One of my favorite fairy tales. I'm glad there's a Barbie version, but I agree with Josephine, THERE SHOULD BE A BALLET OF THIS.

My Mother got me this movie on DVD when I was young. I didn’t know any ballet as a kid so I actually appreciate the amount of work they put into making this watching now as an adult.

The ballet company (I forgot which) that made the choreography for the movie owns the right to this ballet. I hope they do make it into an official ballet in the future.

11:08 Just a barbie doll and probably a lot of new little ballerinas. This movie is actually the reason I took ballet classes as a kid, and even though I decided it really wasn't for me (pointe is really beautiful but it also intimidates me) I never once regretted it.

I'm pretty sure people have already suggested this, but a lot of the DVD extras with behind-the-scenes looks at how they did the motion capture for these Barbie movies (I think it was al the same ballerina, at least for Nutcracker and 12 Princesses) are available on RU-vid! My studio actually choreographed our own version of 12 Dancing Princesses for our spring show not too long after this came out. We used music from Sleeping Beauty and it was one of my favorite shows to do 😊

There’s a behind the scenes video on RU-vid, Maria Kowroski was the Barbie in a lot of these movies. And it was choreographed by Peter Martins of NYCB. A young Tiler Peck also plays the littlest girls in this as well which is so cute to see.

I love your reactions to this movie. Makes me smile. What I love is they got a pro prima ballerina to do the choreography and perform in mocap. That is not easy.

My daughters (all 3) from 25 to 19 and I spent many hours watching all the Barbie movies. This one is hands down their absolute favorite! We still have the movie and watch every so often. I totally think this should be made into a ballet. Barbie rocks!

This movie came out in 2006 .Maria Kowroskibans helped make the dance movement and show also helped in the Nutcracker and Swan Lake lake Also the choreography was created by Peter Martin’s. I also agree it should be made into a ballet someday it will be I hope 💙

Maria Kowroski, a principal dancer with the NYC Ballet worked with mattel to do ballets for their Barbie movies since the early movies were verry ballet focused! And yes they did make that music as well, and it's one of my favourite instrumentals from Barbie (including rapunzel as well)

I had this on DVD and there were bonus features that showed the ballerina they hired from the New York City Ballet to mocap her movements and use her to make Barbie dance following the ballerina's recorded movements. There was also a short documentary about girls going to the NYCB and what a day in their life was. It was so cool, I loved it as a kid. I was a synchronised swimmer and this movie was the closest thing I felt to having a movie depiciting my sport. I eventually became a semi-pro and was an athlete for my country's team until an accident but I always remember this movie fondly.

I've always desperately wanted to see this as a real a ballet. The costumes and shoes would be so beautiful, and the concept is perfect for the stage. You'd have to be a little creative for the bit where they float out of the magical realm, but all the rest is just too perfect...

I have never seen this as a movie but as a little girl it was my favorite story. The shoe fitter is actually a Prince. In the original story there are 12 princes who row the princesses across the magical lake and back home each night and morning. And the girls need new shoes every day because they wear the, out dancing every night.

They did work with NYCB and Maria kowroski to do the motion capture for this film. She also did the Nutcracker for them as well.

They actually have a short documentary about how they made it featuring one of the NYCB dancers called Dancing On Air, the making of Barbie 12 Dancing Princesses, and something called Studio K made a short ballet off of it

I loved this movie so much when I was a kid! I spent hours in front of the tv trying to copy the dance moves. There's a making of video called 'Dancing on Air' that shows the principal dancer from NYCB at the time doing the mocap for the movie

Fun fact the dancing in this movie was mo-capped with real ballet dancers, which is why the dancing looks so accurate.

I'm a figure skater, not a ballet dancer but my best friend is so I stole a pair of her old pointe shoes and made them into Genevieve's shoes!! It was so much fun and rewatching it for accuracy was the best thing ever

So ballet started gaining more popularity during the Regency era (1790s-1810 ) which is when pointe work was invented as well. The popular shoe in the regency era was a square toed flat tied with ribbons around the ankles for dancing. :)

YES! This movie was my childhood and I think my first exposure to ballet and I fell in love with it. So happy to see your reactions to it and while I knew of the proportion issues of Barbie I never entirely realized just how small their feet were since I've always had unproportionate small hands and feet. As a kid it went over my head but I love how you kept coming back to it lol a true pointe shoe fitter

There actually is a ballet of this story! I was in it as a flower when I was 6. It is probably not very well known but it's out there!

All of the original barbie ballet movies, especially this one, make me so emotional whenever I watch them because of how nostalgic they are, this movie in particular is what got me into ballet when I was 4, unfortunately I quit in 2018 because it got too stressful and I couldn't dedicate enough time to it due to school and other afterschool activities. I do regret quitting ballet and I'm planning on going back to it now as an almost 16 yr old (not professionally, just for fun) I really want to see it made into a ballet

There was someone actually performing the dances, Maria Kowroski, she performed for other Barbie movies. The dances will be recorded, motion capture, then they will be put into the program that was used for the movies! She recently retired in 2021 🥹

There's a 10 minute or so Mini doc/Bts video that is very worth the watch. It goes into detail about how they filmed the dance scenes. I agree that it would be absolutely amazing to see this as an actual ballet. I'd die and dance/spin/fly my way to heaven

barbie nerd here: they actually did have ballet dancers coreograph the dances while wearing movement-capture equipment. the bonus on the dvds show us those, and 12 dancing princesses is one of them-- i'm pretty sure the behind the scenes special from the dvd is called 'dancing on air'. and yes, they did compose original songs to this movie. not only several of the older barbies movies used the movement-capture thing for dances, but a lot of the instrumental songs were composed by arnie roth, including most of the soundtrack for 12 dancing princesses (except for like two songs i think) and -- if you know your barbie -- rapunzel's movie soundtrack too. answering the final question if anything came out of this movie: just the dolls and basic movie merch for kids really. although, mattel raised the bar high and had not only genevieve's (aka barbie) dolls made, but each of the sisters had a doll of their own too. and derek, the shoe cobbler also had a doll for him, which came with (and yes, this is true, i'm not exaggerating) twelve pairs of shoes.

I am a dancer and i used to watch all these old ballet barbie movies as a younger kid and i totally wish they would bring it all back too!!
