Approximately 85% of the population is allergic to Poison Ivy at least on some level. a much smaller percentage of people have a reaction to Virginia Creeper. While these plants have similarities, there are enough differences to make it easy to distinguish between the two.

Mine has 5 leaves, I thought it was poison ivy. My whole garden is full of it. After I lost my husband, my garden was neglected, now I know, thank you sir for posting and setting me straight now.

When I was a kid, I was told to use 5 leaf ivy (Virginia Creeper) to cure poison ivy. It works and stops the itch instantly.

I’m one of the rare circumstances where Virginia Creeper does cause a rash. I had a bad rash that covered BOTH my forearms last summer. Irritation spread to other parts of my body, I even got a bad purple bruised looking area on my lower abdomen. Aaaaand I got another dose this week, the rash isn’t as bad this year, and I’ve been hitting it with anti itch meds, even some gojo to cut the oils.

Stay away from Virginia Creeper. I was naively pulling this vine out of my garden barefoot, bare armed and bare legged. I guess I overexposed myself to the oxylate crystals because for 7-10 days my body slowly went from what looked like a few bug bites to a full-blown outbreak of a hot inflamed itchy swollen,rash of pure suffering.

I have seen this happen to others as well Aryana. It can be really bad! I know people who don't seem to worry about Virgina Creeper but for me, I avoid the stuff just like Poison Ivy. So far, I have been quite lucky with them both considering how much I am out there in it. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience!

Very useful video. Clear comparisons. Thanks. While ridding the back yard of weeds I got into some kind of vine last year that made (chemically burned?) a small hole in my skin took a year for scar to go away. I was wearing gloves but didn't count on the vine to whip around like a weird curved rope with some spring to it after pulling out of the ground, plus it was full of some kind of sap.

The information regarding the difference in the edges of the leaves and also the stem width was very helpful for me.. Does Virginia Creeper ever start out with three leaves in the spring? I thought Poison Ivy was in my garden near the picket fence. I planned to spray it with vinegar and salt water. When I went back about a week later the same plants had become five leaves, so I know it is Virginia Creeper. To say the least, I was confused. Then someone told me V.C. can start with three leaves. What do you know about this? Thanks.
@blackhatbushcraft
@blackhatbushcraft 6 лет назад
I have never seen Virginia Creeper with 3 leaves. I only seen it have 5 leave clusters and to the best of my knowledge that is how it is structured. I guess it is possible that a plant may have a defect or that a couple leaves may have been separated? With that said, I know there are others out there with more knowledge of this plant than I have. I hope this helps. Thank you for watching!

@jamesshelbydownard7674

The best way to determine is the stalks are they alternate or opposite? If they are opposite (peace sign), you are good. Alternate stalks are offset...stay away. Poison Oak can have 5 leaves like creeper. Young creeper has 3 leaves. As you showed, where there is one...the othe can be close.

Thank you so much for this! I just pulled the Virginia creeper off my house along with some of those hairy vines and my son and i both have what i thought was a pain Ivy rash and I'm pretty sure this confirms it. I had no idea they were still active when they looked dead like that and assumed it was just another weed vine. I also learned today that I'll probably never encounter poison sumac where we live. Thx again!

LOL! I am sure you know how to avoid it as good as anyone! For people who are highly allergic, this stuff is awful. The thing is, 85% of the population is allergic on some level so it's best not to find out you are in the the majority the hard way:) Thank you for watching and your kind words my friend.

I have heard many people say that as well. You are fortunate to not be allergic to it. I have also heard people say they did that for years and then all of a sudden it starts affecting them with a reaction. I honestly haven't tested myself to find out how allergic I am. I have had a small rash a time or two but I have also been exposed to it and had nothing. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!

I spent most of my life not being allergic to poison ivy and rolling all in it. Then one day in my early 40s...boom! I got into the stuff and was covered in a very painful rash. Just because you’re not allergic to it now doesn’t mean that you won’t be later. I have no clue what caused my body to change like that.

Thanks for the Video. I can't seem to stay out of it. I cut a old oak stump down a couple years ago. It had a vine like the one you showed. It didn't have any leaves on it and looked dead. I cut it down with my chainsaw and then it hit me. worst case of poison ivy I ever had. There are supplements you can get at the health food store to build resistance to it. I have a friend that swears by it he is a landscaper and even supplies his crew with it to keep them fro having bad reactions.

I have always heard that Thomas. One of the worst things is to burn that stuff as well. A friend of mine ripped out a bunch of those dead vines and burned it and apparently it made him sick. I wouldn't have guessed that but I definitely won't make that mistake. Thanks for watching and commenting.

When I was young my parents sent us to wilderness camp in North Carolina. We called it woods craft back then. I remember being told not to burn Magnolia it would make you sick. I did off course and yes got sick. I am not a woodsman by any means but I won't burn that again. Just like I won't run my chainsaw trough dean poison ivy again. Dang 51 years old and still learning. Thanks for the video's brother.

@tedriechman7354

Poison ivy when it attacks the skin, with me, that is holds a type of blister with water in it. When you busts the blister, where the liquid runs is where you will have more poison ivy growing on your skin. It does cause a welt, but blisters up waiting on you to scratch it, which is a big no! Because then it spreads all over you. If it gets on your face, it can make your eyes swell shut. As a kid I found this out the hard way! Very, I mean extremely itchy, which just makes more of it on you. Can be treated by a doctor with cream that dries it up, sometimes with an antibiotic if it affects your breathing, but you have to have a cream to place on blisters. Very horrible stuff to deal with poison ivy on your skin.
