After this video, I have no more plans of reviewing the #Pokemon anime. While still a fun show in its 12th and 13th seasons (originally aired from 2008-2010), you can probably sense some burnout in this video. Still, here’s what I liked about the second half of Dawn’s journey through Sinnoh, the outcome of Ash’s most personal rivalry yet, the maniacal plans of Team Galactic, and how Brock left the series after 13 years.

I know I say I want my best/worst lists to be more uniform this year, and I already added one extra, but there were 2 good ones I had to leave off because I couldn’t think of another pair to make it a Top 15. If you want to know what I’d rank 12th and 13th, here you go. Familiarity Breeds Strategy is part of the final battle I ranked so high, but as I mentioned, it’s mostly build-up. And Memories Are Made of Bliss is a great finale, but not as impactful as the previous finales, and I didn’t want to dedicate a spot on a best list to saying “it’s good, but not as good as what came before”.

Surprised you never mentioned how in Galactic Battles, for one of the first times in the anime, a villain dies on screen (kind of). I'm still so shocked they actually killed Hunter J and her team off, and it gets darker when you remember she had a Salamence and a Drapion that are just stuck in their Pokeballs at the bottom of a lake

While this is my favorite Pokemon series and Dawn my favorite protagonist, I find a lot of its shortcommings never get talked about. Like how it has so many filler episodes, people like to rag on Johto's filler, which can be problematic, but I don't see the bar as THAT much worse when AG's could be pretty boring and DP has not only more episodes than the Johto Seasons, but a lot of their filler episodes when you don't count character focused ones are blatant rehashed plots from Indigo/Johto and Advanced series. The biggest examples are the episode where Ash's Tailow evolves into Swellow, and Staravia evolves into Staraptor, they literally evolve in the exact same way through the same turn of events, at Pokeringer contests. Both take place ten episodes after one of Ash's Gym battles. Ash enters the regional PokéRinger competition with his Flying-type Pokémon, while James enters with one of Jessie's Bug types. Both episodes involve an overconfident former champion who gets knocked out in the first round. Ash's Pokémon evolves and helps him win the contest. Ash's Pokémon hits the hoop over the goal section by hitting it with its wings in the final. Even the background music used near when it hits the ring with its wing is used in both episodes. Ash obtains honorary citizenship from both competitions. In contrast to That's Just Swellow!, James participates in disguise in this episode. Then there's the episode Ash gets Turtwig, which is just Bulbasuar and the Hidden Village. There's also the episode where Jessie relased Dustox being Bye Bye Butterfree, or the episode where Ash and Dawn lose a tag team fight then spend the episode bickering that turns into a boy vs girl plot, just like how Ash and May did in the Advanced series that also involved them in a tag battle. Or the episode where Mamoswine listens to Dawn its just Charizard Chills from Orange Islands. (Not to mention Mamoswine was just rehashed Charizard again) there's also another one that involves Ash and Pikachu encountering a guy with a Raichu and Pichu and the ep just rehashed the plot where Ash and Pikachu fought Lt Surge and his Raichu. And those are only just a few examples. Even the first episode of the season is just the first episode of the OG series. The CoTD fillers aren't that much broder in Johto than AG or DP, the only difference most of the time is they interwove it into a story, but its still the same thing. As for Contest Jessie, I simply didn't care for it because Team Rocket were at their WORST in Sinnoh, not only are their buttmonkey status on full display, but their Magikarp like threat level (unless the plot conveniently decides to give them armor to make them good) and constantly appearing in every episode is at their all time high. Not to mention, I feel Jessie's wins in most cases felt forced. She wins her first ribbon legit, then her second ribbon she wins in an offscreen cut transition from Ash's Gym Battle with Fantina (it's also questionable how a random contest was there and only Jessie knew to enter it, almost as if it forced her too just to give her a ribbon for free), her third one James did it under disguise of her contest persona and it happened because Dawn's Mamoswine decided to lose its temper at that moment, she wins her fourth ribbon, then her last one is given to her out of pity, only for her performance in the GF to just amount to a 30 second fight with Dawn, loses then storms off. As a side note, I hated how Jessie's diva personality was much more in your face this season as it just made the running gag of James/Meowth being afraid of her temper repetitive and made Jessie annoying with how much contest emphasized that, and almost all her performances were just to make her the center of attention even though it defeats the point of a contest and she overused the same flying trick. And I do agree with the consensus that Paul is Ash's best rival. He was the only Ash rival to really challenge Ash on a fundamental level, even making Ash question his own beliefs and methods of training pokemon. I don't like Paul at all as a character, I have major grievances with how their rivalry was portrayed, and I always fucking hate when the asshole edgelord gets the "and this is why they're an asshole, so it's totally understandable" stuff (this is just in general, not just Paul). And Paul is never treated as in the wrong by anyone other than Ash and Co, as it felt like everyone turned a blind eye or made excuses for his abusive and jerkish behavior. But I won't deny he was the best of Ash's rivals purely from his function as a rival; Ash needed a rival like him at some point during his journey.
