Does pokemon scarlet and violet look bad? Did pokemon sword and shield look bad? Why is this being talked about once again in the pokemon community? Pokemon graphics and pokemon artstyle will always be a reason for discussion, but today we will look at why it doesn't matter at all. So, pokemon sword and shield art style is better than pokemon scarlet and violet? It's time for a rest from pokemon gen9 dlc speculation and to get into some pokemon discussion!
Let's get into it!

I prefer the texturing and detail of Scarlet and Violet, the grass, water and trees look great, but I think I prefer Sword and Shield's UI, it has more energy to it. Scarlet and Violet looks too "anatomical" to me, if that means anything. Also I significantly prefer battling in Sword and Shield's stadiums, with the lights, music and the cheering. In SV, you're just on the top floor of a school.
@notsoAceTrainer

Absolutely! I get the "we're going for a school vibe here" thing, but in this case, even with the Tera chant, it's not as hype as SwSh!

@@notsoAceTrainer Yeah I respect what they were going for with Mesagoza, but I don't think it beats battling in a massive stadium, it genuinely made each online match feel like a World Cup face-off haha

It's such a weird argument. That being said, I do like that Sword and Shield knew what they were. The graphics, environments, and performance were consistent. (At least once you're out of the Wild Area)

It's gonna be a never ending argument, and you'll likely see some commenters here with the "I think X is good, and no one can say otherwise" approach. I liked the cosy style of SwSh as well! But yeah, the Wild Area was really barren and bland!

Been preaching this since sv came out. Say what you will but the game is simply not as polished as swsh
@notsoAceTrainer
@notsoAceTrainer 8 месяцев назад
It absolutely isn't as polished BUT, the way it is designed is 100% more complex than SwSh. And without the dev time that Pokémon should have (or the size of the team that Pokémon should have), it was bound to not really end well. Love the game, but can't deny that it suffered!

From the Switch era (so far) I think I enjoyed the artstyle of PLA the most. What makes it so enjoyable to me is that the game doesn't try to oversaturate its creatures and environment but gives it that subtle shade which I feel is very eye-pleasing and makes things look more natural while still being stylized. Overall however, I still firmly believe that Pokemon as a series shouldn't have gone 3D. BW had a very intrinsic design and is what I'd like to call the predecessor of HD-2D, which we nowadays see Square use to great effect in their titles. There's even some amazing design concepts by fans that show off what it could look like but sadly this will never turn into reality.
@notsoAceTrainer
@notsoAceTrainer 8 месяцев назад
The HD-2D would have been a great jump for Pokémon had it become a thing at that time... maybe a little less "filled" I'd say, but that's my personal taste! It is strange how they were trying to break the barriers of 2d at that time and then pushed the 3ds to its limita on Gen7 but really settled on the Switch...
@matthewlasalvia7026
@matthewlasalvia7026 7 месяцев назад
You should have been there years ago when fans were complaining about Gen 5 still being pixelated, and how Pokémon should’ve jumped to 3D graphic’s already. They gave the fans what they wanted with X and Y and now they’re complaining about how the games never should’ve gone 3D. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I think most of this discussion comes from the technical issues that SV has, if we got a bugless release many people would be praising the new textures and details of the game. I agree that each game has its own art, SwSh focuses more on the stadiums and battling while SV is open and focuses on adventuring.

The polish part 100% would have made a difference, yeah. ScaVi well optimized would have been a beauty! SwSh does have a more cosy vibe. Cities feel more special, even though they're smaller in many instances!

I don't think I am wrong in this instance. While the Wild Area was a huge part of the issue, people complained basically every aspect of the visuals of SwSh (with some praise as well, given to towns). Like someone pointed out in another comment, Dexit was likely what fueled that fire to over the top levels.

I disagree in some parts and agree in others... the point of the video is just discussing that the fights that argument starts are absolutely useless 😅 Pokémon has different artstyles in every single switch game and they are bound to appeal differently to different people! (The polished part is a whole 'nother story though!)

The semi realistic textures in SV is what I find the most repulsive, because Pokemon is in anime aesthetics, and putting detailed textures on literal blobs without cel-shading looks horrible (and it's probably the reason why the game performs horribly). Games like Genshin have cel-shading, outlines with simple textures and they look infinitely better than SV. SWSH really starts to look good next to SV. SWSH and Let's go games are probably my favourite art-style-wise, because they don't try to pretend something they're not.
@notsoAceTrainer
@notsoAceTrainer 6 месяцев назад
I kinda like them... they're in that line where if you cross it it's too realistic, but where they are it's just right for me. But I do think that Let's GO had the more "Pokémon" vibe to it of all the Switch games.
@matthewlasalvia7026
@matthewlasalvia7026 7 месяцев назад
The art style in Sword and Shield had a more cel shaded look where as Scarlet and Violet were trying to be more realistic. A lot of this has to do with much the fans complained about how the graphics in Sword and Shield weren’t as up to modern standards so they tried to rectify that by giving Pokémon better textures like fur and metal and making the environment’s overall look more realistic. I mean it’s a video game series about cartoon animals fighting each other, and fans want it to look like Red Dead Redemption 2! Pick a lane, people!

I think considering the hardware that the games are meant to be played on, the graphics style of sword and shield worked a lot better and felt more polished overall. Scarlett and violet just feel unfinished to me. The pokemon look great most of the time and the people look fine but things such as the environment textures just look bad.

I used to shit on swsh so much but after playing sv i realised that it really isnt that bad and i way prefer it over sv. sv was just laughably lazy with the designing and aesthetics. Like wtf was that windmill?? That whole town just made me laugh from how bad it was. Theyre all just the same building copy and pasted 5 times. Even just the way the towns are layed out is sooo much better in swsh. They need to rehire eveyone on that old designing team asap

It always did but think about how often did you have super different artstyles on the same console? Every 4y maybe! Here, just on the Switch you had - 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022 and then 2022 again! You never fully "diggested" one and then you have another. You will most likely, eventually get attached to a specific one!

I think artistically all the 3d titles are good. My primary issue with SV is that I don't see the art style as much as I see the lack of polish in the game. Arceus even ran into this issue but to a lesser degree. SwSh while not looking the most flattering in some angles, used it's art style to work with and even mask limitation of the hardware to make a great game visually (In a similar way to BOTW actually), with its more oil painting-esque aesthetic. That being said, I do love the art style of the DS titles. It felt like a diorama mixed with the old GameBoy games 2D pixel graphics, and I kinda want that to return.
@notsoAceTrainer
@notsoAceTrainer 4 месяца назад
The more detailed you try to make things, the more you start noticing the flaws. ScaVi and PLA really did face this issue. I hope that eventually we'll reach a point where we their team can reach a good commitment between performance and artstyle. Like you said, SwSh was it though I would like to see the other 2 artstyles (PLA & ScaVi) becoming "it" as well!

Hi Ace, This video is great since I think it is now time to talk about that one last time and then put it aside for good. You know how it is important to me for a game to look nice to the eyes. Graphically, I loved every single pokemon from gen 1 to 5 and then, like you said, troubles began around gen 5 to 6. Gen 6 started to look a bit empty a little here and there but nothing too embarassing. In my opinion, Kalos was great (and I don't say that because I'm French. In fact it is the pokemon game I spent the least of time on). Then came gen 7 and WHAOOH ! Alola looked awesome and still is ! Wild Areas in Gen 8 started to show us the limit of Game Freak, really, like I said to you on Twitch, SwSh was only half-beautiful because of that. But now, in gen 9, Paldea look so empty... OK, I get it, we all need to ride our Miraidon/Koraidon as fast as we want without too much obstacles but d*mn ! It made 90% of the area looking ugly. It's a fact. In Paldea, Pokemon are great and almost look surreal for a Nintendo Switch, but everything around is meh... My last thought about all this is the following : for 25 years or so, I saw Pokemon RPG core games becoming more and more interesting, more and more complex, more and more enjoyable for so many reason. Gen after Gen I saw so many good new add-ups coming and going and on and on... It's great to grow and get older with the franchise (and the people at Game Freak). It does not excuse everything but I am thankful to witness what Pokemon has become nowadays. It is probably way better than what I was expecting when I start playing back in 99 since I thought Pokemon was going to die after gen 3, honestly. I was just not expecting ScaVi to be this good and so bad at the same time for so many different reason. Because of this, I stay 50% happy and 50% sad. That put a lot of expectation for Gen 10 for every pokemon lover. It will have to be epic and good-looking AF to shut the haters and trolls mouth up once and for all. Cheers!
@notsoAceTrainer
@notsoAceTrainer 8 месяцев назад
Hey! I agree with everything! Visually, I think Gamefreak's approach is not bad, the art direction is fine for the most part (some I like more than others, of course) - but without the polish that the game deserves, it will always look meh. The evolution is mind blowing, of course, but any old franchise went through that! Mario, Zelda, Metroid... And they all ended up in a better place. Crossing fingers for Gen10!

As someone with mild sensory issues, the look of a story is really important to me. Mostly in the sense of whether or not what I'm staring at/surrounded by for the duration of the experience hurts my senses. Bonus points if it jives with my preferred 'flavors' and 'textures'. Anime, and pokemon by extension/especially, tastes a lot better than most things to me. 3D games rarely taste good to me. And pokemon's art style was super consistent for years, also a huge bonus for me. Gen 3's art style tastes bland and had a bad texture to me. Gen 7 I adore, but it straight up looks and plays like an entirely different series. Gen 8 continued that, plus used an awful color pallete and empty world. I love Gen 9's color pallete and return to toyish cartoon look, but its clear it was mostly accidental, which is a bummer. Swsh tbh looks a little better a few years out, weirdly enough. Both Gen 8 and 9 would look better if they were more populated and looked more watercolor. Btw the best tasting 3d games are lets go and bdsp. Xy and oras are close second. The best tasting games overall are a tie between platinum and lets go. Hgss aged well until a few years ago, and now they feel funny. Aesthetic is a weird science.

@Moonsong227 7 месяцев назад
I totally forgot my point lmao. Gen 3-6 had a very nice and very consistent art style that matched the anime, so I think that's when pokemon became thought of in aesthetic terms. 3d was a huge departure from it, and so was Gen 7.

Half agree. The main thing that makes graphics 'bad' is if the graphics (style, etc) and expectations clash. Think bad cgi in older movies. It takes you out of the experience. I do think that can objectively be measured. The reason why older pokemon games, especially the 2d ones, don't have this problem is because it didn't present things as more than what was expected. The sprites could show character, attack animations the action. There is no 'scene' where they show those, tho. That scene needs to be imagined and no one expected more Now, when you have 3d animation, you suddenly have so much more information that needs to be filled in. The suspension of disbelief, that gap to be crossed, becomes larger and larger. If my character shows emotion, why don't my pokemon? If I can walk around in smooth animation, why can't my pokemon do so in fights? Think old style jrpgs. From ff7 onward there was a character that moved when attacking. ff7 came out in 1997, if memory serves me right. From that moment on, we expected more. And these latest games just don't give us that. So I disagree that it doesn't matter. Almost 25 years of expectations came before today. We lately see so many additions to pokemon outside of battling. But are those additions what people expect? No, they're fun additions. But what if those fun additions get added before expectations are met? Then they become a source of irritation. I stopped playing after sword and shield. I can't do it anymore. And I've played all games up till then. But the gap between what I expected to see and what we got became too large. And I don't blame others for having the same conclusion. I fear that pokemon is on the cusp of their downfall. I hope they course-correct in time.
@notsoAceTrainer
@notsoAceTrainer 8 месяцев назад
I think you misunderstood my point... what doesn't matter is the "fighting" that it creates because for some one is bad and for others one is good. The preference between art styles is entirely subjective, the graphic quality and thus optimization/polish are not.

Okay, this topic is rather interesting for me to cover, since I grew up playing both. Here's my take (If *'Read more'* appears, then click. This is gonna be huge): Pokemon Sw/Sh & Pokemon Sc/Vi both have great artstyles in thier own ways, I'm sure everyone loves the cosy yet lively feel of Sw/Sh, or the vibrant and adventurous feel of Sc/Vi. I'm willing to add to this debate by saying this: Sword and Shield are better overall. Scarlet and Violet had an excellent artstyle, sure. What it didn't have, compared to Sword and Shield, was proper optimisation. However, this is to be expected, because it's so huge and brand new. Sword and Shield's artstyle was still great to me (regardless of the Wild Area) and they weren't so poorly optimised. The fact that Sw/Sh were the cames to get me into Pokemon was just a bonus and Sc/Vi's bugs and glitches did indeed f*** me up once by softlocking me in a Tera Raid. Going a tad bit off-topic, but I just wanna tell you right now that this is why playtesting and optimising is so important, so for any of you out there who wanna make games in the future, all I can say is to *NOT RUSH ANYTHING.* Perfection takes time, but it'll pay off (Game Freak, I hope you're listening). If Sc/Vi were properly playtested and optimised, however, then I could say that I'd enjoy the majority of what Sc/Vi had to offer, aside from all the school stuff. I get the theme of Sc/Vi is the whole "you gotta learn about Pokemon" thing. However, the whole 'school' motif felt highly unnecessary. Like, weren't we literally doing that and enjoying it in Sw/Sh? I know I was. I want to love Sc/Vi as much as Sw/Sh, but I can't look past the whole school motif like I could look past Sw/Sh's Wild Area. What I also hate is the fact that you essentially unlock Legendaries through one of the academy classes (History class to get Treasures of Ruin). School is just super daunting for me at times, sometimes to a point where I just don't wanna think about it, then Sc/Vi is here to remind me about it. Whereas with Sw/Sh, I don't have to worry about that motif, so that's some major stress relief. Also, battling in stadiums did feel more exciting than just... battling in school. It felt more final, more climactic and more exciting. I'm... the least excited by school environments, so Sc/Vi didn't have as much impact on me as Sw/Sh's epic stadiums (where I got to see my Cinderace KICK A$$ on the battlefield. SO F***ING HYPE!). I will give both games a point, and take one away from them. The point given is for the music (THE ***GODLIKE*** MUSIC!), because I swear I ascend when I hear Professor Sada/Turo's battle them in Sc/Vi, or Eternatus' phase 1 theme from Sw/Sh. The point taken away is for the fact that THERE'S STILL NO VOICE ACTING! Like, apparently Game Freak says it "Takes immersion away" from the games, but I completely disagree. Actually getting to hear the characters' personalities through spoken dialogue. How is this done perfectly in spin-offs like Masters or the Pokemon Anime, yet completely squandered in the mainline games?! It's nuttier than Greedent, in the worst way possible. In fact, I can make a case for when VA came in and made something mainline Pokemon related immersive. Anyone remember Iono's trailer where she showcased Bellibolt? Iono had full, japanese voice acting. In Sc/Vi, she's quieter than a mouse, completely mute. If anything, hearing her enthusiasm would just make her more likable and the game would've been more immersive. Same thing with Sw/Sh (Leon's "Champion Time!" quote, Piers mute singing before his Gym Battle in Spikemuth, etc.), I would've loved to hear the personalities of the characters through spoken dialogue! It would serve to make the games *EVEN BETTER* than before! At this point, I'm gonna joke about how "Oh, Game Freak is able to make excellent Pokemon games, yet is too poor to hire VAs for them?" because it's funny and true, but also frustrating. Also, why did Pikachu and Eevee lose their voice lines in Sc/Vi which they had in Sw/Sh?! I loved laughing at hearing *"PEE"* when Pikachu Gigantamaxes. Now you just make them generic Pokemon cries?! Preposterous! My final verdict is that Pokemon Sword and Shield beat Scarlet and Violet by a landslide for me. In fact, I always wanted to bring Pokemon from Sc/Vi back to Sw/Sh to use them there (E.g: Tinkaton). Hate how Pokemon's moves change when you transfer them to Pokemon Sc/Vi, from Sw/Sh and vice versa. Anyway, that's me just about done with my essay. Sorry if this looks like a clusterf***.

Thanks for the comment! I agree that optimizationg took more of a beating in ScaVi and that it was because the game's scope was just wider than SwSh (which isn't an excuse - know what you're biting before it becomes too hard to chew). And above all, I agree with voice acting SO MUCH. Have you played Dragon Quest XI? To me, it is the best example of - wild battles with monsters in the overworld, good looking artstyle and environments and, you guessed it, voice acting! It makes it so much better!

@@notsoAceTrainer I've not played any Dragon Quest game, but I'll take your word for it! The only reason I know of Dragon Quest is because of Hero's inclusion in Smash Ultimate. But, yeah, everything you say is true. Game Freak didn't know what they were getting themselves into. Again though, prior preperations prevent poor performance. I'm not one to make these kinds of judgements, but Game Freak really should've delayed Sc/Vi. More time to prepare would've meant the Gen 9 games would do better. How much time were they given? Like, a year, I think? Again, I agree with everything you said.

It had roughly the same dev time as other main series games (~3 years) I believe. But given the scope of the game... not enough!

@@notsoAceTrainer Yeah. They needed more time on Sc/Vi, just to polish everything.

The Scarlet and violet CGi realistic face is not good to me In MY Opinion, But Not Ever Hate Pokemon The New Ones Like Scarlet And Violet I Love The Cartoon(Anime-Like Tasty Epic Cool Soft And Awesome Style Than The Scarlet And Violet's Realistic, Lippy Lippy Lipstick, Realistic Skin And (Yuck!) It's Too Realistic It Needs To be Beautiful Like How Sword And Shield And Sometimes Arceus Looks Like Than Trashy Faced Characters Why Do People Hate Sword And Shield I Don't Think It's Bad It's So Perfect And Delicious Nothing Is Ba d About Sword And Shield Artsyle Graphics It Looks Wonderfully Epic And Deliciously Cool I My Opinion The Scarlet And Violet Human Characters Except Pokemon Are Too Much Realistic Nah "But Don't Hate Pokemon Always Love The Pokemon Anime Movies(1st Place) And Anime Series(2nd Place)"
