Just to kinda explain what happens around 43:13, crits in Gen 1 ignore stat buffs/debuffs for whatever reason and only use the user and target's base stats. On the other hand, when a confused Pokemon hits itself, stat changes are taken into account, so your Kingler was hitting itself with its own powered-up pincer. All that aside, though, great video; it felt like a walk down memory lane

Pokemon blue, red and yellow were god tier games. I remember staying up late and playing them for hours as a little kid.

First of all: Holy fuck, your video production has always been top tier for a channel this small, but you really outdid yourself this time. Absolute madlad, I really hope the Algorithm blesses this video eventually Anyway: I also share a lot of the same feelings towards Blue. I think that the impact and wonder if the original games has kind of been forgotten about due to all the sequels. But like...the surprise of your Pokemon evolving, the existence of the evil team, being able to Surf on water...that shit was creative and memorable. Even if the sequels are "better" games, they fundamentally can't share that same sense of surprise and wonder, since they iterate on that foundation

Blue is most nostalgic for me because while I had red, blue, and yellow I lent blue to my cousin and he lost it across the country in Nova Scotia

God, I love videos like this one. Analysis and funny humor jokes and all that stuff is great, but there's something about 'I love this (game/movie/whatever) deeply, let me tell you my story'. If you really want to break this game wide open, I'd recommend looking up the gen 1 competitive scene. If you think Psychics in gen 1 are powerful, wait until you see how powerful Tauros, Snorlax, and Chansey are (especially Tauros). Also you can replace the battery in your Blue cartridge if you want to play on Gameboy again (the same thing happened to my old Silver cartridge) As a huge Pokémon fan, this was such a grear watch. Not really the sort of Pokémon videos you see any more, this was such a welcome change of pace. Keep up the good work man :)

I should first apologize for taking so long to sit down and watch this, as it may well be the best episode you've posted yet, and I say this as someone who literally hasn't touched the series since Gen 1; it truly encompasses everything that keeps me coming back to this channel. A handful of additional thoughts: - Back in school there were three of us that played first-gen Pokemon; I was the only one with the Red version, so my Growlithes and Scythers were always in demand. Of course I also had to pay an even MORE ridiculous price for Porygon. - Bug types were even more useless against Psychic opponents back then because so many of them were also Poison type, which was weak against...well, you know. - I'll have you know that I have obtained not only all 151 original Pokemon (yes, 151; my friends and I attended a convention where Mew was being given out, got him completely legit. I sold the cart some time back, but still have the paper certificate of authenticity laying around) but ALSO a Fine Arts degree, and had thus already wasted my life to the maximum possible extent by my mid-20's. - Even if the rest of the video wasn't as great as it is, Freedom the Jigglypuff would have been enough all on his own to make this an instant favorite. Again, wonderful stuff, very much worth the time investment to take it all in. Keep up the excellent work, always looking forward to whatever you've got coming next, and hoping the new year has treated you well so far.

Yeah this video perfectly encapsulates what it felt like playing Pokémon when it first came out. From the initial sense of wonder, to the gruelling zubat cave and the sense of freedom I got when I made it out, to the excitement and disbelief at there being 5 elite 4 members and everything in-between, culminating in the capturing of Mewtwo to wrap everything up. I did the new glitch when revisiting it as an adult and played it way more strategically with my party as I just power levelled my starter and three other Pokémon the first time around. Thanks for the video, it's nice to know this was a shared experience for other people too

Hey, this video took me back a couple of years in my childhood, i remember beeing deeply anoyed by zubats on caves, i remember the time that i was exploring some rivers when i got surf and found zapdos, that was a core memory that i cherish a lot. I still think Pokemon Crystal, the pinaccle of pokemon vibe, the radio that changed songs day in and day out, the bug catch contest that i got my first scyter, THAT FUCKING MILTANK from goldenrod city gym, ah, so many memories. These Old pokemon games have a game feeling so imaculated, so "fun"?, i love the way the game leads the player without actualy telling the player, well, i spoke a lot. Loved you video from the bottom of my Dwarven Heart. Ah, almost forgor, back in the day i remember playing a ripp off mon game called "robopon", it was kinda like, pokemon with robots (recalling right now, wasnt medabots that too?). Well, now i spoke a lot again. Well, it was good watching this, thank you.

Before every christmas as a child for as long as I can remember, i'd travel to my relatives that lived an 8 hour car drive away from me, so i'd always boot up a new game of Blue for it

Very well put. I still have my red cartridge from way back when, too. I don't even have a way to play it any more, but I'll be damned if I ever get rid of something that was such an important part of my childhood. I haven't played any of the versions past gold, but I'll never forget how tightly Pokemon gripped me as a kid.

I think you perfectly captured our shared nostalgia for this experience.

I fail to understand how a video this entertaining, heartfelt, and well put together scores under a thousand views. Seriously, you took maybe the most widely-dissected game of all time shy of the original Super Mario Bros. and managed to put a fresh spin on it. This was excellent, Pokemon blue is one of my favourite games of all time, I don't need any other pokemon games (apart from pokemon stadium obvs) other than this. I don't want extra pokemon, extra mechanics. I want there to be a bug where I can get infinite items, I want to be able to use that to get mew. The combination of this with pokemon stadium (where they tightened a lot of the battle mechanics) made this next level, it added additional ways you needed to optimize your team for the different cups and set a good level of challenge. Upping the graphics and seeing your pokemon in 3D was so cool too. Happy memories and I give this a play through every few years or so

I grew up watching my older brother play Pokemon Blue, or at least hearing about his progress and the pokemon he would get. I was more interested in the anime at the time since RPGs were a foreign concept to my dumb baby child brain. I was just used to a lot of action games like platformers and such. Seeing numbers and a lot of text, it didn't excite me. Paper Mario was what got me into RPGs and I was far more interested now into diving into this genre. It's funny looking back since I skipped from Gen 1...all the way to Pokemon X & Y. I was so used to hanging with my older brother while he played the game, using cheat devices to get Mew, and finding the infamous Missingno. Loved this video, had to leave a comment after hearing about your Pizza Tower video skyrocketing your subscriber count.

I liked the intro setting the tone with you out and about on your GameBoy playing the game, and the pacing for explaining general game stuff and various tidbits/memories was neat! The reason your confused Kingler did so much damage is because confuse damage is based off of your attack stat. and as you said it was maxed out after a swords dance.

It was the red cartridge of Pokémon Red in a red Gameboy Pocket for me, but apart from that, you just made me relive my youth for 50 minutes straight. I just purchased, not even two weeks ago.. A modified gameboy color with Haunter on it and a screen that has a built in light in it. And Pokemon Yellow. You know why? Same reason as you. Great video. (Although arguably the most important game of my childhood was Super Mario World and Donkey Kong Country. But these were up there too. For sure. We are boomers, Skelly... We're getting old. :( )

I would love to say that I have this same feeling for Emerald, but... I actually have this sort of nostalgia for one of the earlier versions of Pokemon Clover. Y'know, the 4chan shitpost romhack that /vp/ made. Despite being a joke romhack I find that it's overall better put together in every way than many serious romhacks (not to mention recent mainline games).

I remember when my friends at school would tell me you could capture pokemon easier if you just kept hitting B and A. I did that for YEARS till Gen 4. It kinda worked!

Thanks for your video, your channel is still one of the most underrated i know. I will always love gen 1 enjoyed 2&3. After that Pokemon kinda lost me in search for something similar, Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne was right up my alley, also a great series. I can't wait for your next video

Yeah, by today's standards, Red, Blue, and possibly even Yellow are extremely dated graphically and gameplay wise. But what a lot of people tend to forget is that, back then at least, there was nothing else like them. A lot of kids I knew didn't even know what an RPG was, but Pokemon had them hooked and probably led them to getting into the genre where Final Fantasy Mystic Quest failed. You also can't even explain to people what an absolute phenomenon Pokemon was back in it's heyday, though Pokemon Go did come close. I will say this for the gen 1 sprites though, they look more like monsters than the the later iterations did

Oh and subbing for your shmup-stuff (and you clearly put time into your videos; this was enjoyable). Making an extra comment as RU-vid has started deleting them again (yay!).
