Pokemon Crystal with only a Corsola - Can this little cutie do it?

I'm continuing with my forgotten Pokemon series. Corsola honestly didn't get a lot of love until generation 8. I've never once thought of putting it on my team so I'm excited to give it a try today!

I'll take the "do everything with perfect DVs" strategy for future runs. It'll mean weak pokemon aren't made even weaker by crappy DVs. Also, Hidden Power Dark isn't super useful coverage in the main game compared to some other Hidden Powers.

as a corsola enjoyer, this is sadly accurate LMAO i have a soft spot for the never used and forgotten pokemon it seems, the older i get the more and more i realize a lot of my favs are either bad or forgotten fkjdshkfsd, specifically with early gens. ive used corsola quite a few times (tho never solo, but its fascinating to watch, so glad i found this channel), my favorite moveset is probably surf, ice beam, ancient power, and recover. jack of all trades, master of none is very much the vibe. ancient power specifically defines this kinda playstyle for me, as the boost will always help her. i have always truly loved her moveset tho, cause there really is so many options there, and recover is wonderful. sandstorm team: sandstorm, toxic, recover, surf physical: recover, earthquake, headbutt (flinching is cool), ancient power special: surf, psychic, hidden power, recover curse: curse, recover, surf, ancient power a rollout set, like she has so much variety. she reminds me a lot of the slowpoke line, being a slow beefier water type, but her typing and speed hinders her so much more. edit: its hilarious you forgot surf, its easily my favorite HM, im always excited to get it fjdhfksdfs but i LOVE water types. really there's not much i dont love its like varying degrees of love depending on mood, but anyways, it gave me a chuckle that it just, wasnt really a factor/important for you while it is for me. i dont think ill ever tire of just how differently we all approach these incredible games. concerning hidden power, as someone that rarely uses it anyways, and when i do its like the above, corsola lacking MORE special moves, so i would try hidden power, see which one i got, if its special, cool, its if useful even more cool lmao. so basically, hidden power is filler, imho. i think being able to make it dark typing 100% of the time for a solid coverage and good STAB when needed while also helping runs be more smooth in general thanks to perfect DVs/IVs would be better in the long run. otherwise best case scenario is you use a pokemon with an absolutely garbage move pool and hidden power [random DVs/IVs] can make it better, or give you more type coverage, like it did with girafarig, but as you noted, that kinda skewed the playthru a bit, not in a bad way, just in a different way. if you tried it again, would it be the same? what would you have to approach different, etc. i also think just not using it is silly, when you could use it creativity anyways, its literally one of the few moves that you can do such with, why NOT take advantage of it? to curate your own hidden power is the true power.

I would say to go with perfect pokémon, *unless* you think that having a specific hidden power type would be highly useful on a pokémon, in that case, set the DVs as perfect as possible while getting that power. For at least some pokémon, losing a few DV points for a good HP type is what actually makes them a perfect pokémon.

What an incredible contrast that allowed the dot-eyed smiley Corsola to shine in the end with a decent time. 0:13 - I'd argue that they did Corsola the opposite of a solid. What an excellent video! Thorough as always Scott! That experimenting at the final Red battle is the most innovative concept of all the solo challenges I've seen on RU-vid. Personally, I think the more consistent strategy would still be: Protect, Surf, Recover, Rollout, at level 88 Reason? The biggest luck hurdle is Pikachu missing one Thunder only. - 3 Surfs required to kill off Pikachu and Espeon. - At this level, based on damage calculator AND assuming Red's Venusaur has perfect DVs (which it does not), each Surf deals an average of 15.2% damage, which takes 6-7 turns. You can alternate between Protect and Surf, and not worry about Full Restore as Red cannot heal while Venusaur charges up Solarbeam. - With Venusaur out of the way, you have 3-4 Surfs remaining. Surf (and Recover) until Snorlax has about half health, and start setting up Rollout. Set up in a way that takes 4 Rollouts to kill Snorlax and the final one on Blastoise. - then Charizard shenanigans

And if that ain't bad enough, in Alola, when Corsola are in Horde Battles, if they call for help, Mareanie can appear, then they violently attack the Corsola. I mention it because it's a good primer for type advantages, combos, and the new mechanics introduced in Gen II that have stuck around since then. At least, for an 11 year old like I was when it came out, it helped me learn the major combos, and the battle segments helped solidify them in my mind forever. As always, I love the scientific approach you take for these videos, and it's a very enlightening approach to the challenges for the game series we all know and love. Keep on keeping on, and GLHF!

My friends and I did this to make our team comps fun. We would make list of all the types. We would roll dice 6 times to determine what types we could make our teams from. We would then spend 1 week catching and training. Then we battled.

I did a play through similar to this with Corsola when I was young. I liked to do that a lot. Take one Pokemon through the entire game and see how it performed. Of course, I was a child and didn't know much about type advantages, STAB moves, and the like. There's something about these Gen 2 Pokemon, man. They're relatively plain compared to Gen 1 and 3, but I still love them. I got Gold version on my birthday and played it that night at my birthday party. I think I like Gen 2 the most because I feel so much nostalgia for it. Even moreso than Gen 1 even though I played it first.

Making the hidden powers consistent is more fair, but I think it's more fun to have it be different, so you can luck out every now and then like Girafarig did. Love your videos!

Been looking for more and more poketubers to follow, like mahdrybread, and jrose. Glad I've found your content. Been plowing through every video you've uploaded. I enjoy the structure and edit of your videos. Much love. And I'd love to see a crystal run with just phanphy. Love him! If you ever get to newer games I'd love to see a scolipede only run too!

Your Rival's Bayleef just really hates the idea of a clean ocean and thriving coral reefs, so that's why it prioritizes poisoning Corsola over knocking it out with Razor Leaf in Azalea Town. The more you know.

0:10 Yanma? Forgotten? It’s one of my favourites. Dunsparce, Gligar and Octillery are cool too. I think they should give Girafarig and Stantler counterpart evolutions, Dark-Psychic and Normal-Psychic type specifically.

I've been doing a water type run and included Azumarill and Corsola only because they're cute and I picked some favorite water types instead of the best. Their stats are crap though. Glad to see someone isn't alone in how aggravating it is to use this thing later on against better enemies.

For many years, I've had this mental image of a Lilleep attached to the top of a Corsola as it hopped around. The ultimate double battle! It's all I could think about during this run. It just looks like something should be between the horns(?) of its backsprite. Like a slingshot or something. Good job pink sea garbage.

Corsola is weak to electric, grass, ground, fighting. So you could've gone with HP Flying but Corsola is an example of a mon who benefits more from the perfect DVs.

With regards to the Red battle at the end, I'm curious if it would be any more consistent with Corsola's Mirror Coat. Five of six of Red's Pokemon are special attackers and Corsola has good bulk, so it would probably be able to counter-attack most of them pretty well and then use Recover afterwards. Would probably still leave Venusaur and Snorlax as issues though.

On hidden power, maybe you can set a rule of either choosing hidden power's type, or be allowed a Dark 70 Hidden Power with Return, which I think would give special attackers a tool that's compares reasonably to Return.

I’m surprised that corsela is struggling so much with its base stats, which at a glance look decent. Also the thought of bellsprout learning flash is hilarious to me. It’s like belsprout is so full of sunlight that it’s chlorophyll will simply glow, I just imagine snapping it like a glow stick to get it to glow (not breaking it, obviously)

Hi Scott! Hi Denis! Go for the first option in what you asked in the video. That was a very fun run, congratulations! You're learning the ways of the Bingo and I'm all up for it. And the thing with the TMs before Victory Road was so "you": I've never seen it and I loved it! It was very original and you should be proud about finding things here and there that shows your personality in the challenges. I dunno how I feel about your making like five things at the same time. It seems the only way you can keep up with your schedule is like this but then it leads to you overwriting attacks that you didn't meant to or completely forgetting important battles. While it's all fun and games (and your job), I can't help but wonder just how much it annoys you, since you time the runs and all. Hope you're doing okay!

I'm slowly becoming more consistent during the filming process. I have an awesome person working on some seriously cool software that is going to add so much more consistency and mental space to my playthroughs. While right now things can be frustrating at times I still love every moment of creating these videos and I'm investing in a future where these frustrations are eliminated or minimized! I'm doing more than okay, I'm great because I get to talk about Pokemon with a bunch of other really cool people.

My solution would be to pick your hidden power before you start giving the Pokémon the best possible coverage, the better coverage might be better than having higher stats so the lower stat Pokémon might actually be the best of its species
