Never reveal a fangame until it's complete, that way even if Nintendo does C&D it would already be too late for them since the fangame is already in circulation on the internet. It sucks since your project won't get the exposure it needs but it's better than being cancelled outright.

The biggest issue with fangame makers needing to make all their monsters and stuff, is the seriously steep task of making a series of monsters that actually look good and catch peoples attention. Not just a tiny community saying 'Oh I like this', but a wider audience recognizing their visuals as looking good before they even start moving forward with a game using them. In modern times that should be the initial goal, a visually pleasing look and catchy monsters. Then ya need a theme people can get immersed in. I am a fan of a new monster taming game taking some ideas from the Dot .Hack series, and using the world gate concept. Multiple phrases, beginning, middle and end, that generate a world based on those concepts. The game would have monsters of a lot of different types appear based on what words are used, and the same monster could be reused with new color palettes, movesets and typing, adapted to new biomes, like Pokemon Delta Species. The big difference in this random generative concept would be how assets are decided, and what monsters you could encounter, and what types they are. In my concept here, assets wouldn't all be locally downloaded at once, just a base amount, and a lot of the worlds assets could be obtained as you play, other than the core hub of the world and the monsters in it. So you select your phrases for the gate, it gets information from the server on what the world will look like and the monsters encountered, and then sends that data to you right there. Each new area would have new visuals and monsters you have not encountered downloaded. The devs could use AI generative models to create tons of new visuals and monsters on the fly, and sit around approving what they want to add to the servers asset pool. So you could run into never before seen monsters and visuals with every generation in real time as the devs approve of new content. Visuals, monsters, movesets, whatever other mechanics involved that help create your monsters identity, it could all be new when you catch things. Then you raise these unique monsters, possibly fuse them together, etc. Join PvP battles and try and work out what your opponent is capable of with their own unique team. AI generative models using your decided upon visual style, with real time content additions, is the future. We just need models that work, and the dev teams would approve stuff in real time and code additional stuff where necessary. I would absolutely pay subscriptions for such a cool game.

I think the irony is that pokemon is kind of making their own competition. While it will never make a big dent in their sales, I imagine they loose at least a couple of thousands from smaller indie games ect. At the moment, I really only engage with pokemon through rom hacks and fan games. I have played more games like Coromon, Nexomon ect than anything officially pokemon related in years.

At this rate they might be looking at death by a thousand cuts. As the monster tamer genre grows I think there will be a fair amount of people that'd rather play a few indie games than an official pokemon game.

I'm working on both a Pokemon Fangame and an original Monster Tamer, so I see the pros in both options. For my original game I have full control, can make my own world, make money from it, all the benefits of making your IP. However, I also still occasionally work on my fangame, there are things I literally can't do in an original game that I can do in a fan game, like improve things I feel need to be improved in Pokémon. I can buff and nerf Pokémon, I can improve Ice Type, I can make Pokémon abilities be related to their Pokédex entries, things like that. It's fun to add my spin to an existing world that I love, it's fun to see how things could be if I had control of the Pokémon IP. My original game has priority over the fangame, obviously, it has more pros; but I still want to work on my version of the Pokémon world. (Not sure why I'm writing this, but it's gonna help with the algorithm. Ok bye.)

I dont think that will be a shifting of pokemon fan game creators to new Ips at all. There's a huge difference beetween producing a pokemon game in pokemon essentials RPG Maker, than going to do a full new IP. Imagine that creating a new IP is drawing something from zero, and making a pokemon game is editing a already well made image. Im creating a new Pokemon Fan Game as my first step to game developing in RPG Maker, its already a huge taks when you have most of assets done, imagine when you have to create it from the zero Remember guys - greed always preeced the failure
@RedRaiju
@RedRaiju 16 дней назад
The difficulty really just depends on how far you want to go. You could just rename stuff and using different assets. A pokemon center could just be a vet's office, a pokedex could just be a standard bestiary, and a pokeball could be a magic lamp or something.
@charnalk5572
@charnalk5572 10 дней назад
@@RedRaijuThe problem is the asset themselves, not how you spin them. If you reuse assets with little, or at least not enough transformation to warrant it being called it's own thing, then chances are that you are going to get sued. Assets comprises anything from tileset to sprites, to music, to story beats/characters. You can make this alone without a team, and you can't get a team that's willing or can work for free (or at least, very hard. It's already hard enough to have a team working consistently for a non profit that uses pre made/reused official assets, image now that everything has to he remade from scratch. That's 2 to 3 years of full time investments, meaning 10 years for part time and some romhack already take close to that to be completed).
@RedRaiju
@RedRaiju 10 дней назад
@@charnalk5572 I was saying that it wouldn't be super hard to use different assets and rename things when needed. There are a lot of assets for 2d pixel art (in all price ranges) rpgs that can be used without the threat of Nintendo. Official pokemon and official characters would have to be removed to replaced with original content which would probably be the hardest assets to replace. Having to change the sound effects, sound track, tileset, etc of a game wouldn't reset all progress. You wouldn't be drawing something from scratch, you'd be tracing over something you already made with a varying amount of changes depending on the fangame in question.

Basically, I want to do a bit of a thought experiment as to how Kanto would look like if it was reimagined with modern game design sensibilities, since both sets of gen 1 remakes stuck very close to the original design. Maps redrawn from scratch, encounters rebalanced, some new events to help with flow, and even a mechanical pass over the existing Pokemon species, unburdened by the need to maintain backwards compatibility. It would be a waste of effort to make all that from scratch, when I can use Essentials as a base and learn Ruby to make the occasional more demanding stuff.

Like everyone else mentioned, The biggest problem is making appealing creature design, a couple get close like temtem, coromon, palworld (to me at least) but you can never shake the feeling of "thats just a pokemon with different colors" or something. Theres also the combat, pokemon's is unique in the industry and trying to alter it slightly often leads to some clunkiness from the aforementioned games, while making something totally different like action, strategy or something just makes it a whole different game.
@yokaipinata1416
@yokaipinata1416 16 дней назад
I get what you're saying. I think I like games that dodge the issue entirely by not trying to use the Pokémon aesthetic as a reference/basis. Cassette Beasts just did its own thing for the designs. They don't look like "Pokémon but a bit off" because they aren't trying to look reminiscent of Pokémon. Long standing rival Digimon is the extreme scenario, where it straight up seems to run opposite to Pokémon in its approach to creature designs and do things the latter would never do.

The problem is, pokemon is cute and generic enough that most attempts to make simples games with cute creatures hard, without delving into fans going "pokemon ripoff" or "pokemon killer?!" And makes me sad because it makes me think of the nineties and the "doom clones" craze haha. I definitely don't blame Pokemon Fan Game devs for making their own game, over making (said) fan game. BUT, there is the honest truth that the Pokemon IP is what brings attention to these games. Without it, your game has to be 100x better, in order to make even a bit of profit. Not to mention the "stigma" of being a Pokemon clone. An issue that Palworld even struggled with... and look how successful that game was. Again, that is no fault of the indie game developers; but it's a rough, brutal world out there. They have to decide to risk losing it all and making the Pokemon fan game that they want, or to go all in as a business and make a completely new IP and hope that it gets an audience. It's not an easy choice.

Fan game dev here. I've put a lot of previous effort into actually creating a Monster Taming game, but I've been struggling to find a team. I'm developing a (sort of easy-to-do) fan game in order to be able to have a fully finished project for my portfolio with the hope to reach more people, because I'm a game designer and scriptwriter (but not a programmer or an artist, the two positions that help the most when attempting to prove you've got experience) and fan games are accessible in both coding and spriting, things that although I can sort of do I'm not a specialist on. I would not make a fan game if I wasn't almost obliged to do one in order to prove my 7 years of experience in projects that mainly failed to be released because of others abandoning the project (usually for work reasons, which I completely understand).

^This. I see memorizing elemental interaction systems as akin to memorizing formulas; it places the focus on the wrong thing. Many math tests nowadays allow you to consult the formulas because what matters is knowing how and when to use them. The real world forgives you if you have to read a formula. Not so much if you don't know how to apply the theory. Same with type systems. "X beats Y" in an isolated interaction is one thing. What the type chart must be kept in mind for is building movesets and team compositions with as few vulnerabilities as possible (e.g. not taking types into account at the macro level is how you end up with a team with no reliable answer to, say, fire, and don't realize until it's too late). This is why I don't necessarily agree when someone accuses "handholding" or "it makes the game too easy" when a game lets you consult elemental interactions at any time.

People make fan games for the same reason people make stuff out of the public domain: There is a cool story and game tradition that they want to closely participate in, and it inspires them to create. They want to play with the toys that exist in new and novel ways and tell stories, draw art, or develop games directly in that tradition. There's also something to be said about people interested in making games or art, but not necessarily interested in doing character or world design, so a fan game can help facilitate that. It's also worth noting that "Original IP" is a much harder sell in terms of getting people on board for the project. People will rightly look at such a project as work that should be paid for especially since that IP is going to be enriching a small hand full of the people at the top. At least with a fangame "nobody is making money"
@yokaipinata1416
@yokaipinata1416 16 дней назад
There's also the practical aspect. A number of creators start by doing fanworks because a framework for telling a story is already in place. In an original work, the characters and worldbuilding have to be built from scratch. It's like a stepping stone. Kind of like the difference between having to make your own engine for a game and using one that already exists like Godot or Unity. This isn't necessarily the only viable route for developing one's creative skills, but it's one that is easy to see how it might work well for several people.

I didn't play Palworld, but it seems to be targetting a different group of players than Pokemon. Pokemon usually tries to be more wholesome (to the point of also being a bit too childish sometimes in my opinion) despite being about people making their pets fight each other. But it you look at Palworld's description made by it's developers on Steam, you see stuff like making the poor creatures work in weapon factories until they die, a notion about making them die to protect you, using them as shields... and from what I see, such behaviours (in game) seem to be encouraged by the devs. Perhaps the game itself is great, I can't know since I didn't play it. The author's just played the "look at this edge" to draw the spotlight and stand out.

Keep in mind, the take downs come from the legal teams and corporates not the developers. The developers being more on the creative are usually flattered by these games because they know what it takes to make a game and the amount of care and passion that goes into these projects. The tskedowns always comes from those that will specifically view fan games as a threat to their brand and bottom line. $$$ However, despite what people may think they are within their legal right to do this and it is always worth pushing that passion towards a new IP where these fan devs are capable of making all of the decisions without any sort of fear of pushback.

Honestly I can't blame pokemon for being strict with their IP, to keep copyright you do have to do that or risk it becoming public domain. Also games like Coromon have built in game settings that are in line with the monster taming community like choosing any starter, built in randomizers, and built in nozlockes as base settings and is just a generally great game that it differentiates itself enough to be great on its own. The general Fandom will find these games (like cassette beasts and monster sanctuary etc.) on their own and make them profitable without pokemon having a stake in the game. I love the yellow and crystal legacy mods but really the devs need to make unique games and branch out to stay relevant.

This is actually why I shifted from making my own Pokémon fan game to making my own original IP but instead of it being a game, I made it into a book series. Pokémon: Obsidian Scales became Dynix: The King of Beasts Festival, because I did not want the Pokémon company to take down the work that I was going to put into the game, so I decided "Screw it. I'll just go ahead and do it my own way", so instead of making it a game, I figured turning it into a book series will let me have a lot more leniency, and I can do exactly what I want with the franchise.

I've humored the idea of a Pokemon fangame in a region with exclusively new Pokemon based on creatures from the Warcraft franchise. However, the more I thought about it, the more I realized it would be far too dangerous to tango with both Nintendo and Actiblizz at the same time if they ever caught wind of the game. So I shifted focus to just making it its own thing with no particular theme in mind beyond what monsters I think would belong in a high fantasy. While I'm far away from being done with the game, here's some of my ideas so far. -6 playable races with out of combat perks -At least one monster of every type combination -Two new types Holy and Void -12 Class Hall Commanders based on play styles rather than types like what gym leaders usually do -Questing system for additional exp -A very rebalanced battle system to minimize luck (Freeze is gone, diminishing returns prevent being stun locked, etc) -Power level reminiscent of Generation 3 if it had the physical/special split.

I've been developing my fan game, and have considered separating it from the pokemon ip, I'm ok with making the remaining monsters to cover for it. My battle mechanics are even already pretty un-pokemon like, but I kinda want to keep it pokemon because I find novelty in "using existing pokemon in a setting with new mechanics" interesting - take Legends Arceus for example. Having said that my pokemon-to-new-design ratio is like 1:3 - even counting new forms as the '1'

At this rate, Nexomon will become the next Pokemon. Gamefreak will go out of business while VEWO takes the Pokemon legacy and turns all Pokemon into their hand-drawn creations. XD Seriously, people are going to start put up hunger strikes and create "train track picket lines" to prevent people from buying Legends Z-A if this BS continues. My hopes of creating a Pokemon fan game that retells Generation 6-9 without the gimmicks is crashing and burning. I guess I could make the fan game and only give it to my nieces and nephews to play for free. TPCI can't send a cease and desist if I never give it to anyone other than my friends because not only it is not making money, it's not getting promoted. (I'd have to tell them never to talk about my game on the Internet, or TPCI would threaten to sue me if I didn't delete the game from existence and take it away from the people I gave it to.

I don’t think gamefreak and the Pokémon Company will go out of business with how profitable the pokemon franchise and ip is. And including all of the things connected to the pokemon franchise as well. They have many different ventures to make money. Considering how much money they make and has existed for almost 30 years. Since Pokémon will be 30 years old in just two years.

Can we get a slow clap please? These fan games are usually better than the mainline games themselves, all it takes is for one team to make a franchise that will actually compete against the pokemon games to take massive sales away. Good job Pokemon Co.

Then when I evolved the other at Night it ALSO became the LIGHT Form so I paniked and quickly shut Roblox off with out continuing after that. Then when I got back on I saw it was in Dark form and relaxed. Then I checked it's Type and it was Bug and Light. They should have been making their own games from the beginning. There is no reason to ride on the back of Pokémon if you have your own interesting ideas that might be sold. They should also look into releasing their title to as large an audience as possible even if it means being spread out across all platforms. An issue a lot of the devs create is not presenting their games to as large of an audience as possible.

Because I've seen so many awesome, original designs from fans.. and while, sure - the inspiration came from the love of Pokemon, these creations don't deserve to be reduced to being a "fake pokemon." Pokemon doesn't own nature and the concept of otherworldly creatures. These fans just made their OWN, original beastie! That's cool! With how rotten the company treats their fans, they don't deserve the degree of passion these fans have. ..No I'm totally not salty, lol.

Nintendo's problem is their greed and indifference to the fan base, Nintendo bans literally all fan games in its franchises, this is why Nintendo has lost the sincerity of its fan base, turning into just games for the whole family, unlike its former competitor SEGA. sega allows fans to create content, which is why there are SAGE and millions of fan games for Sonic and some other franchises, this is why the Sonic fan base holds many events around the world, while Nintendo... Meh I haven't heard about Mario or Kirby's fan meetings with like more than 1000 ppl.
