> Hey, I think we should have a slot machine in each Game Corner have better odds than the rest! >> Hmm, that may work. But they should be occupied by NPCs most of the time so that the players can't abuse them too much. > That's a great idea! And we can make those NPC say something hinting that they're playing the machine with the best odds. >> Alright, but we should mix dialogues up in Celadon so that it isn't so evident. > Oh, but aren't the slot machines already evil enough? >> What? You're fired!
7 years late. I wanted to tell you there is a newly documented "Golem Glitch" that allows you to increase your odds of winning through skillful play in Gen2 slot machines. It takes advantage of the off-by-one logic error, specifically for the Golems. The effect of this glitch is that you can win 777's at a very high rate on ANY slot machine.
dang can't believe I came across this video today randomly.. earlier today I was using save states on my crystal at the game corner trying to get 3 7s and I realized the slots were rigged.. no matter my timing I couldn't get the 3rd 7. and then I found this video randomly looking at other random pokemon videos, crazy
Thank you so much for this! My partner and I were trying to figure out what the mechanics were and how deterministic the slots actually are in Crystal, and google searching didn't yield anything very helpful, and then this randomly popped up in the right hand list while we were watching random glitch videos of yours. Great work as always!
So in summary for optimal slot play: 1) Use the lucky machine and play with 2 coins to unlock prizes from the top row. 2) The first reel has two 7's close together. You want to stop the bottom 7 within four spaces of the top most position on this reel. That way you can tell if there is "7 bias" because the game will delay and wait for the 7 to show up in the top position and stop it there. If there is no detectable bias, just mash A to get to the next attempt. 3) On the second reel stop the only 7 within four spaces of the top position. 7 bias will make the game line it up with your first 7. 4) On the third reel again stop the 7 within four spaces of the top position. 7 bias will either make it match perfectly or use the slow reel/golems/chansey to make it match. If I understand correctly once you are on a "7 bias" spin you can get the jackpot 100% of the time if you execute properly?
Dude, I did not know the odds for getting a 777 were so low!!! Because I literally got it TWICE on a row in an emulator in Pokémon Red Version!! Without cheats!!! That is sick!!!
Hey! Thanks for bothering to make this. I was playing Silver today and went into the game slots... I just chose a random slot machine that wasn't the lucky one and spun. I was just hitting A in succession and I noticed the second reel continue to spin until I had two 7s. Then the third one had the Chansey and I won 300 coins! I was so bemused cuz I'd never seen that before! I then spent the next hour trying to replicate it. Sometimes I noticed that I would get the 7 bias you described, but nothing would happen on the third slot. Sometimes the third slot would continue to spin but I never got a third 7. I got the Golems like 10 times but only one gave me the 777 win. Never saw the Chansey again after my first roll. XD Didn't quite understand all you were explaining, but it still helped a lot. Twas awesome! Thank you!
So... I only really just found this video today, and I find it extremely enlightening! I had no idea about the Lucky Mode and Normal Mode, nor did I know that there was actually a Lucky Machine in the Game Corners (I always thought it was just a joke put in by Gamefreak lol). But most importantly, this really changes my opinion on the game studdering/frame changes! I had always noticed (In GSC and RBY) that the game would sometimes lag a bit, and on the Vitrual Console I had always thought that it was a bug with the frames caused by trying to stop the reels too quickly (I most likely just got really lucky, but I DID win 7's 10 times in a row on the Virtual Console Red by abusing this thought). But now that I know it's actually the game trying to win for you, or at least help you win, that makes the chances of getting the things I'm trying to much easier! Thanks! And for the record, I agree... Farming the E4 would just be faster, but I'm playing Crystal on the Virtual Console and I'm not at the E4 yet...
The underlying mechanics of the slot machines is a lot more interesting than the slot machines themselves both in the game and real life. The real life version is essentially a tool to separate fools and their money due to the terrible house edge.
Absolutely. Only real differences are the exact methods by which they're rigged, and that real slots are rigged enough against the player to ensure profit, while Poké slots are rigged slightly in the player's favor.
@@joemck85 Indeed... and yet they got rid of the casino because "people complaining" but they can sell booster packs for 5 bucks and that is fine for some reason. Ahh, I forgot, it is because they make money off of it.
A good informative video with great insight to the slots work. I would be interested in a detailed breakdown of how the Gen 2 card flipping game works in Gold/Silver/Crystal if you are still doing these kinds of videos.
This morning I went to the Goldenrod Game Corner for the first time on my current Crystal save, bought 50 coins, grabbed the lucky machine and I went from 50 to over 2200, thanks for this informational video! EDIT: I got a nice amount of sevens but no pokeballs :-D
Can you explain the switch puzzle in the goldenrod underground? I've looked through the code (pret's disassembly) but it's pretty convoluted and I can't quite figure out which door is affected by which function, e.g. doorstate 3 CLOSED2 seems to set the tiles at (4,12) through (5,13) to $3f, but $3f represents no collision on all tiles, and also those coordinates don't appear to relate to a door on the map.
I agree, also I kinda think Sinnoh had the worst. You can't win anything period if Clefairy doesn't appear. At least it doesn't have anything that really needs explaining. And it still had nice music.
I peeked at the code of the card game, and it's just what you'd expect. No manipulation, just subject to the game's PRNG if anything. So in the first draw the return rate is exactly 100%, then it increases by a little bit until the cards are reshufled again. Now, whether it's more efficient to play at the slots or at the card game is a good question that I don't know the answer of.
Pretty sure it's the card game, single card (the ×24 return) every time. I'll double check and make a quick pastebin on that subject if anyone really wants it.
I thought about making a little hack to have the game to auto play the slot machines in either 2 or 3 coins (say, a total of 255 times) so I could have multiple games do it at the same time and compare the results of betting 2 and 3 coins. You could also throw into the mix the card game, but then you'd need to account for the time taken between each play in the different mini-games to come to an accurate conclusion. Also hacking the game to auto play the card game would be harder since you'd need to program d-pad presses as well in case the top left card gets picked. I'd do all of this but I'm lazy and sounds a bit time consuming considering that very few people if any will care about the result.
Thank you for the great explanation. Its a long time since I had statistics course at school so this helped me a lot ( Im referring to the explanation haha)
What happens if you use the lucky machine in the morning and save there, if you load during day or night will you be standing inside the NPC and still able to access the machine or will the game move you?
It took me a while trying to get a dratini in silver the whole time the last reel never stopped exactly when i pressed it, except on my last needed 777 it was a perfect spin
you say it may be worth farming elite four for cash, but then again some players prefer to have the best moves early as possible. lets think about this. magnemite in this game abselutely sux. he has by all means good stats. but whats the best damage move he has? thundershock. around 40 power until he reaches 45. then he gets zap cannon. but it has 50 accuracy wich can miss all from 1-5 times in a row before it hits once. not worth having. so if you could buy better moves for good pokemon, or average pokemon like a magnemite.. it would be freaking worth doing so early as possible. and not wait until you are 80% done with the game. because even if there is another region to explore in this game. there is barely to no story there. so you can just go from gym to gym and finish the game once again in a couple of hours tops after taking the league. having to wait this long before you get better moves like thunderbolt.... not worth
Super late reply, but the distribution of Thunderbolt, especially in the early gens, is baffling. Besides Pikachu in Yellow, nothing could even learn it in RBY. It was only accessible by TM, and only one Thunderbolt TM was available per playthrough. Even as of gen 8, very few Pokémon get it in their level-up learnsets, and of those, Zapdos, a literal embodiment of the Electric type, only got it in a single game. Flamethrower and Ice Beam, its sister moves, weren't nearly as bad. Flamethrower was in a good chunk of Fire-type learnsets and Ice Beam both saw some distribution in learnsets and also was buyable from Celadon Dept. Store. Game Freak's attempts at balance are certainly interesting.
@@TheLamartian i think game freak didn know how to build pokemon straight at all, or balance them. In gen 4. More pokemon got better moves they scale in. Like Gyarados. Super strong physicle attacker. In first 3 gens, no water move scale in atk. Bite, crunch does not scale in atk. Hitmonchan. Very good fighter type. It was very much known for its elemental punches. But they scale in special attack for whatever reason. Once again.. Why? Aggron in RSE. Steel/Rock type. Super slow, super tanky, more then decent amount of 1 hit power with the right moves. And it doesent learn 1 rock move. Why? Same thing with Jynx. It doesent learn one psychic move before gen5 or something. Flareon. Super strong physicle attacker. Doesent learn one fire attack it scales in before gen 5 or 6. Like.. Pokemon for the longest time has fucked up the smallest thing when it comes to stuff like this. So its just wierd to think about in my opinion how they either didn know how to build pokemon or moves, or they experimented with stuff. And only got it right just recently.
There's something that's unclear to me. Does a bias for no symbol mean that there's no bias, and the result is completely based on how well you can time the reel? Or does it actually have a bias toward avoiding a symbol match?
Late on this but it sucks the only good machine is in FireRed/LeafGreen. One particular machine actually stops on the symbols you choose without fail and you could basically train your eyes to recognize the color of the Sevens. It made the Game Corner in those games actually viable :p
So the jist of it is that you have to play super early in the morning just to use the better machines and they aren't even drastically that much better? Ugh lol
Hmmm the lucky machines were still occupied when I showed up at 11:34am.... can anyone explain this, do I need to have all the badges or have beaten the game
I see no appeal in gambling and loosing all your money IRL. But in Pokémon I have a serious addiction that ruins all my saves because I run out of money and can’t buy anything for my Pokémon 😂
im so fucking irritated because i got surf and none of my pokemon can learn it and where im at in the game right now, no water pokemon spawn, and the only thing i can get right now is a sentret at literally the beginning of the game
Dylan Carrier did you watch the video? Savestates won't help you mid-slot-session. Now saving between session attempts can certainly save you coins, but Save Game works just as well for that (albeit slightly slower)
Just try and get a 7 in top left or bottom left, then middle or in-line in the next reel, don't have to be too accurate, then carefully time the 3rd row, easy money.
