Recently, I was reviewing Pokemon market data for vintage singles and noticed that the price volatility has been stabilizing, and in some cases, showing signs of price growth. Ever since the pandemic boom in 2020, most vintage Pokemon singles have experienced significant reductions in price; however, it appears that a new price floor has been set. Could the market finally be reverting back to stable, organic growth? In this video, we'll take a look at some vintage Charizard cards and see what insights they hold for Pokemon investors and collectors.

I'm so used to all the attention given to ultra modern cards, this was a refreshing watch. I keep hearing that nobody cares about vintage anymore, and I think that is the case in this current downturn with the market. However, in periods of growth and hype, I'm confident people will always want to go back to the beginning and vintage cards will boom again. The classics never go out of style.

Hope so too. The vast majority of my collection is vintage so... :D I'm not going to take it to the grave so even if it's not for sale now and will not be soon either, there will be one day I will need to monetize it and hope to get some profit from it, not take a big loss. At least I enjoy the collection. I always pity people collecting anything, just whatever they pull or these with not clear goal in collecting. Having a very profiled collection helps to make good decisions, track the value of your cards and more importantly just giving joy of the entire process.

Haven't really had a problem selling my vintage stuff. It's just bulk though. Might just be older collector's expanding their vintage sets.

Shh, we have to keep up the nobody cares about early Pokemon narrative going. Some of us are still in the accumulation phase. Pretty logical, and backed up by actual data, as opposed to vibes based “investing”, that fundamentals are gonna beat FOMOmentals over the long term.

Having a collection identity is a great piece of advice. The joy of collecting is the experience, but there is nothing wrong with hoping to see collection value rise along the way.

There’s a big auction I’m waiting on ending tonight. Just got my zard 1st Ed 9 for 19k a few weeks ago. I see a potential for the price to jump to 25 from here… an auction at 24.2 ending in 11hrs.. zard is always nice indicator of where things are going… these prices still shock me though.. I was hoping it would drop to 15-16 flat. Great vid. 🔥

My theory on price increases for PSA 8's is because the demand from the whole "cleaning/Altering" crew that intends to bump them up the PSA scale.

Thank you very much for this detailed analasys. Up to which generation you would say that prognose would count or in other words, up to which set you would define the era as vintage? For me personally it is up to the HGSS era vintage (up to Skyridge WotC or "Old" Vintage) and I would call BW/XY post vintage, SM/SWSH/SV modern.

Tough question! Personally, I consider WOTC vintage, but I think the EX era would also be reasonable to include.

Recently I started to think myself that even Sun and Moon became vintage already haha. Not available anymore in any stocks, prices are really high for literally every good card and not so many were printed in comparison to next eras so they are really seeming to be more and more vintage every year which is ridiculous of course. Seems every year in Pokemon TCG is like 10 years in real world haha.

Psa 9 cards need to be selling for more. No wonder people break 9s to try and get 10s.

I understand people going for 10 but to be honest I'm not to spend so much money on 10 just to have a ten. Most people that I showed my cards have no idea what it means and doesn't give a damn about it. I think 9 are still mint and really nice, much much cheaper. I prefer going for 9's for my personal collection way more. In fact I have only one PSA 10 card, most are just in binders, the rest of graded cards are 9.

i never understood why anyone would pay soo much for these modern psa 10's with pops in the thousands if not tens of thousands*Cough* alt art umbreon *cough* when theres psa 10 vintage cards with pops under 10 for great deals. like carddass,topsun etc.

Great analysis. But one note is I think charizards are not a good representation of the whole market since they are consistently in higher demand. If we look at other chase cards in vintage sets I think we would see higher declines compared to the charizard chase cards in recent years.

Exactly. Great vid as always, great analysis etc. but personally being of everything charizard, moonbreon, evolving skies etc. stuff... gods, there thousand of pokemon, so many trainers, galleries, interesting collections... enough of this fire lizard and other hyped cards.

I actually ran some of the other chase cards and found similar results (Snorlax, Dark Blastoise, Lugia, Umbreon). They all experienced major corrections but found floors in 2023 and have seen small gains since.

@@pokemon_classics This is interesting. Hope it's a really sign for the entire market :) Surely, the Charizards are the most recognizable and representative for most of the people so they were a perfect example for the analysis then. Personally I'm most into Gym Heroes/Gym Challenge cards but despite having some decks built to play at home I collect only Sabrina's cards. That's my entire vintage collection.

@@pokemon_classics Indeed. For me it's Gym Challenge, then Gym Heroes and then waaaay behind other WOTC Kanto cards. All these cards from WOTC have simple graphs, the technique was not there yet but... they do have soul and that "something" in them that makes you appreciating it more than any still stunning modern cards. At least on this channel we agree about it I'm sure :D One more thing about Gym sets... The more "themed" decks/sets/collections for me, the better. I always enjoyed the most collecting such cards, playing such decks, building them, even watching other people collections that had this "theme" thing in them. That's what I love about it the most. I don't like when people just follow something and copy what others do. I like when it's personal in a good meaning of this word.

I have no idea . . . I suspect Pokemon will reach "established collectible" status when its first audience reaches peak financial earnings (age 50-65), which would be 15-25 years.

The best indicator for determining future potential market values would be golden age comics and its market values over time in comparison to those who grew up with it aging into their 50/60's. Its not an exactly precise comparable, but its the best data we have.

I said in another comment below this video, I start to believe that even Sun and Moon cards start to be vintage so probably like 15-20 years and WOTC cards would be artifacts or relics, however we call them :D
