With the recent release of Pokemon Sun and Moon, Did You Know Gaming decides to look at some Easter eggs, facts, secrets, and history of Pokémon Stadium. The Pokemon Stadium games are Pokemon spin-offs for the Nintendo 64 that retain the series' core RPG gameplay. The first Stadium game was released in 1999 in Japan, and 2000 in North America, Australia and Europe. Although this is the first Stadium title in Western regions, it's actually a sequel to the 1998 Nintendo 64 game Pocket Monsters Stadium, which was only released in Japan. Through our analysis, we show that this Japane exclusive was intended to be released for the 64DD during its beta, and how the spin-off's surfing Pikachu and Raichu inspired the alolan Raichu design. Pokemon Stadium 2 was released in English-speaking regions in 2000 in Japan, and 2001 elsewhere, and focused on the second Pokemon generations. All three games allowed connectivity with the Game Boy Pokemon games, such as Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver and Crystal (though the latter three were only compatible with Stadium 2).

Miguel Alejandro Vergara You definitely should. Also do yourself a favor to replay either one of the 2nd gen games then. Haruhi Suzumiya Indeed and I had all three of them, even finished Crystal day1 in ~6hours. But Silver is the one I had the best memories with although I had Gold long before when almost no one knew about gen2 over here in Europe/Germany.

Yeah i hear you there brother. I literally marked the days off on my calendar until Stadium 2 came out. I wish my Gold cartridge still worked, because i put so much time on what i called my "Dream Team" at the time. Now i know some of my picks weren't the best but its fun to see how you playstyle changes over the years.

my mom bought me this game and I played it for like two days... my older brother lent my game to his buddy along with my Goldeneye game for his Mario 64... Needless to say I never got my game back but fast forward to the present and my wife bought me an n64 with Pokemon Stadium 2

Hawelo92 They'd need to do a lot more than what the old games did in gens 1 and 2 and I don't mean with the whole fact that Pokemon is 3D now! With the Switch being a thing main line Pokemon games are going to be on Nintendo's console now! A new stadium game in my opinion would have to be something that has 5 times the mini games brand new features no one ever thought they would want and this is what I think would be really smart modes to help teach newcomers to competitive battleing hell bring super training back by making a gym where you can train your pokemon's evs It needs to be much more than 1 and 2 and Game Freak not wanting to do all that work is avoiding it.

To me, the Pokémon Stadium series was more than just seeing the Pokémon in 3D. It helped me learn the mechanics of the game better, as well as expanding the GameBoy games by using the TV to play them in faster speeds which helped. Also the mini games were really fun, I also loved that it had its own Pokémon league that you could battle which was different than the main series. It was also great to use Pokémon that you can’t get easily such as the legendaries.

That's because so many N64 games were developed with it in mind but were either pushed to a standard cartridge, another console, or cancelled altogether due to the DD's constant delays in development and quick failure once it actually came out.

Was disappointed with Masuda's reasoning for not making another Stadium game recently. The Stadium games did far more than allow you to view your Pokémon in 3D. They definitely helped improve the postgame for the current generation. Sure, we have the Battle Maison/Tree now, but they still lack some unique rulesets such as Pika Cup and Petit Cup (Stadium) along with Little Cup and Challenge Cup (Stadium 2). Both Stadium games had a slightly better Pokédex which showed exact locations of Pokémon depending on the floor of a dungeon. The upcoming update for Pokémon Bank might have a built in National Pokédex, but who knows how detailed it will be, especially in comparison to Stadium 2's Library. That being said, I would love to see a Stadium game (or a sequel to Colosseum/XD) for the Nintendo Switch.

i actually still want a battle sim like stadium but updated for the modern age. with all 800+ pokemon currently available. with rental pokemon *INCLUDING* legendaries (which must be unlocked through gameplay). with poke,pettite, pika, and prime cups all there... with perhaps new cups. the gym system would have to be the current one, or maybe mixed and matched throughought each gen.

we want it in HD and on an actual console. Plus additional features, if pokemon showdown was enough we'd be playing Battle Revolution. It would be nice to see a Whirl Cup (water pokemon) P1 Grand Prix (fighting pokemon) The ability to take pictures again would be nice. I'd also like to tie my pokemon bank and create my own ranch for my pokemon. Contests coming back in HD would be amazing as would Pokéathlon. Minigames and rental pokemon are also a must. And unlike Stadium 2 I would like to create rental movesets so I don't have to use Ember on strong ass fire types. Battle Tent, Battle Frontier, Battle Resort, Battle Maison, Battle Chateau, Battle Subway could return or make cameos as a battle background.

If I recall, you couldn't use your own pokemon or made it annoyingly hard. No mini games either. Multiplayer you had to use your DS rather than normal controllers. Also EXTREMELY limited rental pokemon. You can't just choose your own and battle whenever.

That's weird as it's not a good move on Diglet. Surf on Pikachu is awesome to have. Electric types normally can't do anything against the rock/ground types so having a strong water type move is perfect coverage for them.

@@MazterP28 Yeah but almost every Grass Type in Gen 1 was also a Poison Type with the Exeggcute line being the exception to that. Having coverage for Exeggcute's line would be great but Earthquake would do neutral damage to every other Grass Type, have a higher base power than Acid AND get STAB from Diglett's Ground Type.

Alola Raichu's design is based off of Raichu's animation from Pokémon Stadium when using Surf. It's exclusive ability is Surge Surfer. It's exclusive Z Move is Stoaked Sparksurfer. It can't learn Surf!

Idea for how a new Pokemon Stadium could innovate: Give us the full Hoenn Battle Frontier that was cut from ORAS. I'd buy it. Bonus idea: Include the Johto/Sinnoh Battle Frontier attractions too, and let me battle all of the gym leaders and champions like at the Pokemon World Tournament in Unova.

As a child, I hated using anything that used batteries as I never got an allowance. So instead of having to buy a Game Boy, waste lots of money on batteries, and play on screens that weren't backlit, I made use of my favorite feature of Pokemon Stadium 1 and 2. Using the transfer pack, which one came with Stadium 1, but not 2, I could play Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, and Crystal on my television. It was sweetened even further when you unlocked Doduo and Dodrio mode that let's you play at 2x and 3x speed.

Selene Hernandez The reason Stadium was fun was the rental Pokemon, being able to instantly pick any six of all Pokemon and battle your friends, without having to catch and train them which takes forever. Just having instant access to every Pokemon from all the new gens and picking six of them to fight with would be extremely fun. 3d has nothing to do with it. Also the minigames were the best.

But "party games" aren't really a viable market anymore. It'd be reliant on online battles and they're risking bad sales, which would leave it with no online community. It would honestly need to be more than a straight battle sim for people to fork out £40+ for it, like a coliseum 3 with an online rental mode could work.

Party games are the main reason people still buy Nintendo systems at all these days. Xbox and Playstation are going hard into online multiplayer while Nintendo is the only one with splitscreen couch multiplayer games don't listen to blayde hayes, they're asking for Battle revolution 2 (EWWWWWWWWWW)

D-NetSavior Really? I think the battle facilities already replace what Stadium tried to do during the first generations. Aside from that, you have the minigames, which were fun as hell but not worth an entire home console game. Remember that Battle Revolution failed miserably, and that was at a time where battles still featured immobile 2D sprites.

Thank you so much for this video. It reminded me of how much fun I had playing this game as a kid. I just found my N64, plugged it into my TV and started playing Pokemon Stadium 2 again. And HOLY CRAP! It still holds up! There's something great about a difficult Pokemon game. Playing with rentals is challenging and super fun at the same time. Now if you excuse me, I have a Gym Leader Castle to dominate.

An interesting thing about using hacked moves is that there are animations for the pokemon using a move they shouldn't have. Mewtwo in particular had a cool way of using Psybeam which it can't learn.

the animations are likely character-independent, while the move is bound to an animation. The animators cant always afford to make a separate animation for every move for every character, and the programmers dont want the game to crash when a unique animation is not available, so they just resort to default animations as a backup.

4:33 An interesting note about the Surfing Mini Game is that it's unlocked by default in the 3DS Virtual Console version of Pokemon Yellow. No Surfing Pikachu required. A nice addition to the digital re-release, I must say.

I think when Junichi Matsuda said it need to be inovated if they wanted another Pokemon Stadium game, it needs to wow people because now the main series are in 3D on the handheld, having a 3D pokemon game on the console won't sell and people will stick to the 3DS main series games as you can already have a 3D local and online battle.

That's actually exactly what he said. Its not impressive anymore because handhelds are now fully capable of 3D, where as up until gen 5 they were limited to 2D sprites. They also had the battle factories since the GBA, so challenge battles also aren't much of a selling point anymore. As for the rumored "Pokemon Sun", technically I don't think you can call that being on a console, since the Switch is more portable device than home console. They're just _treating_ it as one. They don't want to impact 3DS sales. They may eventually drop that, much like they dropped the DS being a "3rd-pillar".

Wrath's Turntable Time Machine Rocksmash Attack (AKA The Mysterious Reuploader, Ace-edo Mask!) No, albeit that is subjective, but all you'd really get are prettier 3D models. IIt doesn't actually change much about the game. We're already talking about a system that can produce visuals pretty close to the Wii in practice, so it would just look like an HD port.

***** He actually did say that, more or less. If I recall, it was because B2/W2 are direct sequels, and splitting the userbase by making it _exclusive_ to the 3DS didn't make sense. If they did, you wouldn't be able to trade or battle with the previous games, and Pokebank didn't exist yet either.

I don't know about making another Pokémon Stadium, but they sure could learn from Stadium to implement some stuff in the main series. I think the mini-games would be a great addition, especially since they could be used to train EVs (like the Rattata Race shown in this video -- could be a Super Training for speed, for instance).

One little trivia here: If you beat the Elite Four in Stadium 2, you could learn Aeroblast to your Lugia in Pokémon Gold. That was the only way your Lugia could learn that move, since in Pokémon Gold Lugia appears at level 70.

"Essentially" is the keyword. It didn't have a Gym Leader Castle, it didn't have preset rentals of every Pokemon in the current generation, it didn't have a Professor Oak/Rowan's lab feature, it didn't have Minigames. That's why it sold poorly.
