Okay so a few corrections. First off Ground isn't immune to paralysis, it's immune to getting Paralyzed from electric type moves. Burn now cuts Attack damage not the Attack stat, if it was still just the Attack stat Body Press would not drop damage at all when Burned. The change seems to be because of Body Press, otherwise this would bypass the Burn. Sleep turns use to reset on switching out but they no longer do.

Including his slander against stall, it takes skill, you have to stop everything your opponent does again and again, if they get out of the box it is rather difficult to get them back in. Also games take longer and you play less meaning ranking is much harder to grow, a loss really hurts in stall as each battle is more of an investment. You lose 1 out of 3 sweepers almost no sweat, you lose 1 out of 3 walls you are up the creek, with a broken paddle.

I still remember the days of Gen 1 where freeze was permanent. As annoying as the status was, it did lead to one of my favorite moments in playing Pokemon. When I was a kid, I played Pokemon Blue. I caught a random Clefairy before doing the Saffron City gym. I forgot to switch Clefairy out of my party. So Sabrina wiped out the rest of my team with her Alakazam, leaving me with a low-level Clefairy. That turn, Alakazam used Recover to heal itself to full, as if taunting me. I used Metronome, which resulted in Ice Beam. The attack managed to freeze Alakazam, allowing my weak little Clefairy to take out one of the strongest Pokemon in the game with a flurry of slaps to the frozen face. Because of the overhaul to freeze after Gen 1, this is an event that'll never happen again. But it still stands out in my memory as one of the funniest moments ever (and why Clefairy is one of my favorite Pokemon).

The Toxic and Scald and just general move redistribution in Gen 9 is probably one of the best things they've done in a long time, and not just for status conditions. People complain that the older generations had such terrible learn sets (which was true) but at certain point all Pokemon started to feel the same. This is both due to Pokemon having wider pools and the reusable TMs. This is is definitely a move in the right direction to make Pokemon feel unique and give previously outclassed Pokemon more of a niche.

Yeah I forgot to mention that. Though outside of popular moves like Earthquake and common Rock moves, a majority of Physical moves make contact. Other ones that don’t tend to have narrow distribution or are niche/weak in Base Power, or are exclusive to a certain Pokémon. Off the top of my head, the only Special moves I’ve seen that I remember making contact are Draining Kiss and Grass Knot. The closest thing to a Special Rocky Helmet is Rowap Berry, but it only works once unless you have Recycle or Harvest. In terms of Abilities and moves… there are ones that trigger when hit by an attack of either category, but not specifically Special, unless we’re talking about something like Light Screen/Mirror Coat or Frosmoth’s Ice Scales. Physical Attackers just suffer way more from contact effects, and that’s even before factoring Intimidate or Burn, which Special Attackers ignore. Plus, Special Attackers have access to moves like Psyshock (or Psystrike with Mewtwo), which deals damage on the Physical Defense side, or they could run Body Press if they have high Defense. Galarian Slowbro’s Shell Side Arm can be Physical if it would deal more damage. Physical Attackers don’t really get moves like that.

There's this Pokemon fangame called Pokemon Tectonic that overhauls status conditions to be much more unique and less RNG reliant. For instance, paralysis is replaced with numbness which slows down Pokemon and decreases the amount of damage they deal. Another example would be dizziness replacing confusion which now supresses abilities and increases the amount of damage a Pokemon takes. I'd love to see some of those changes make it into the main Pokemon games along with frosbite and drowsiness from Legends Arceus. Not only do they add less RNG into the equation, they're more unique than just having a chance to stop an attack or dealing damage over time.

I think the issue with freeze is that in Gen 1 when you were frozen, that was kind of it. You were always frozen until you were hit by a fire move or used a status curing item. When they changed that, though, they didn’t adjust the probability of inflicting the status so it ended up just being anemic. If it was like a 30% chance to inflict it might have been a better diet paralysis, but frostbite is just better. And special attackers need to have some fear put into them.

honestly i really like frostbite but kind of dislike drowsy. while frostbite makes complete sense, game balance wise and freeze's effect already was budget sleep. drowsy replaces the more useful & well known of the two "guaranteed your mon doesn't move" statuses and it replaces it with a paralysis that reduces defense rather then speed, literally from the one being copied to the copyier. i don't think drowsy is worth returning to main line game, i simply think sleep needs nerfs like do not reset the turn timer when the pokemon returns or a more extreme version, allow this status to dissipate while the pokemon is withdrawn.

Burn doesn't cut the physical attack stat in half, it cuts Physical Moves base power in half, same effect with the added change of not being ignorable by Critical hits which ignore your stat changes. (Same with Frostbite, Special Moves base power, not the stat)

I’ve always thought that there should be an ability like intimidate but reducing sp attack instead of attack, and a equivalent of burn status to halve sp attack just like burn halves psysical attack. This would be to balance things up, same like having some attach have secondary effects equivalent to this hypothetical status that halves sp attack. Oh, and it should also deal the same chip damage of burn status.

I find it interesting how Pokémon hasn’t added a proper status effect (outside of frostbite) in ages, but a lot of types have new status effects regardless. Psychic and confusion are heavily tied together, same goes for dark and flinching. If you really want to stretch it, you could count hazards like stealth rocks as well. I think it’s a little too late for Pokémon to add a “status element for every type”, but I think it could be an interesting concept to explore in an indie creature collector game.

Considering the way freeze works it makes perfect sense why there isn't a move that always inflicts the condition. It's only balancing force is that fact that it has too be inflicted randomly. If there was a move that could inflict it reliably then I imagine the status would be absolutely everywhere because it has a chance to take a pokemon out of the battle permanently and with a reliable way to set it up you don't have to worry if your opponent breaks out sooner than you'd like.

Poison: Assuming it’s a weak one, it’ll hurt a human for a time and then go away on its own. Toxic: Assuming this covers the stronger ones, it’ll hurt and keep hurting a human until they die. It will also tick for more than 1/16 of their hp per turn and ramp up much faster. Must be treated at a hospital ASAP or death. Paralysis: 100% chance of having restricted movement, 40% chance of not moving at all, 10% chance of just dying because your lungs or heart are paralyzed, with no further input from an enemy. Not a pretty way to go. Burns/Frostbite(they’re the same thing, except they come from different temperatures): Extremely painful, makes touching things nearly impossible due to the pain, and concentration is extremely limited due to the pain. Accurate to how BRN/FST works in Pokemon. Must be treated asap or your max HP will lower due to permanent damage. Sleep: A concussion. Probably. You did get knocked out on the spot. Drowsy: Extremely hard to concentrate, your body is more sensitive to external stimuli. Accurate to how PLA does it. Freeze: DEATH.

Legends solved the issue of broken status, just to get reverted in gen 9. May Gen 10 fix this!

A way to fix "sleep" is to have the effected Mon wake up after a set amount of damage and they'll wake up after being switched out. Have the chance to inflict freeze rise by 30 or 50 in rain, blizzard or hail and lower it in sunny day and cut freeze time when sunny day becomes active.

The conditions were designed for a game that allows you to cure them with an item. I think no matter what your opinion on them is that would be fair to mention in a thorough evaluation. I know we're club competitive here and we don't like items, but that too is entirely arbitrary. You could easily have a competitive scene that allowed for 5 Max Potions and 3 Awakens and it would be just as fun and just as annoying to compete in it - the only thing that would change is the meta of which Pokemon benefit from that.

I'm not sure if I agree that physical attackers are disadvantaged on the whole. As it stands I think it's a successful case of imperfect balancing, and finalizing mechanics like a status that bricks special attackers would require other balance tweaks for special attackers to not get left in the dust. Physical attackers often have access to better moves (think Close Combat vs. Focus Blast/Flare Blitz vs. Fire Blast/Earthquake vs. Earth Power as high power coverage moves, or the distribution of Dragon Dance vs. Quiver Dance as combination boosting options, or the fact almost every increased priority attack is physical) and physical walls are often less common and less optimized than special walls (see: Blissey). Burn, contact effects, and intimidate add unique challenges to physical attackers, but that creates an incentive to build a balanced team, since both have their own distinct strengths and weaknesses.

I'd like to see all statuses changed to last 2-5 turns, sleep restore 1/8 HP at the end of each turn, and I'd like to see confusion become more like the other statuses, replacing an existing status when it is applied and ending if a different status is inflicted. Frostbite > Frozen. Poison should have an effect outside of battle- it tied your team's status to the journey you're on.

Burn doesn't cut the Attack stat of a Pokémon in half. What it does, is cutting the power of the physical attacks in half (for example, Earthquake becomes a 50 power move if you are burn). That's why Foul Play and Body Press are affected by Burn, even if those moves don't use the Attack stat
@Mgauge

Frostbite being a counterpart for Burn that impacts special attack is such a good idea, yet it's ignored solely for the sake of tradition. Much like so much of the type chart and the increasingly convoluted requirements for new evolutions of old Pokemon.

I mean, when Game Freak constantly nerfs sleep multiple times through the decades, and it still manages to be the best status after all that... Anyways, I thought of a way to balance Freeze, and that's to utilize both Freeze and Frostbite. But the thing is, for my balancing, you would only apply Frostbite via status moves (with one exception. Tri Attack would be able to apply both frostbite and freeze), and Freeze would only be applied to a Pokemon with Frostbite, and is only though physical/special moves. So in a way, Freeze is now like the "badly poisoned" status, but requires an existing status applied. And of course, if/when the Pokemon defrosts, they no longer have a status effect.
