The insane thing is there’s no reason for power creep in Pokémon. The format rotates, so it’s not like current cards have to compete with older ones. Cards could reverse power creep, get weaker, and as soon as the strong cards rotated everyone would be forced to play the new ones.

Yeah it's a bit strange. They've actually done this specifically with some trainers over the years. Something like fan of waves vs enhanced hammer and judge vs N. I think the problem is that they want to have Pokemon in the newer sets that tend to be slightly better than ones in older sets in the same standard pool of sets, so even if stuff rotates the power floor trends up because the cards get better from set to set. I wish they didn't do this, but it kinda makes sense from a business perspective. They always wanna be selling the new hotness
@connorism69

Agreed. Damage creep just seems like a really lazy and unimaginative way to create hype. Reminds me a lot of monetary inflation, lol.
@Jaco3920
@Jaco3920 2 года назад
The problem is that not everyone plays standard and the rotation that comes with it. If new cards started getting much weaker, formats like expanded would become essentially stagnant (why use new weaker cards when you can whip out VMAX's?). They could just wipe the board and start a new expanded that starts with the newer sets, but I'm sure that would anger a ton of people.
@Chiffonaise

You to have to keep in mind that Pokémon is a Japanese TCG, and in the home country, they did series (block)+ formats instead of rotation for decades. This means that the "big shake up" only occurred every couple of years instead of annually, meaning formats were likely to stagnate for longer periods of time, and thus a stronger incentive to power creep. TPCi honored WOTC's rotating Modified (now Standard) format since they took over western organized play. However Japan did their own thing for a long time, and likely designed the game primarily with their local constructed format rules in mind. Japan had their first annual-style rotation in late 2019 with regulation mark A (equivalent to SUM~CVI, Ultra Prism-on). Though since home rotations are now a thing, I wonder if they've taken steps to mitigate the power creep now. Like an internal design guideline for power leveling Basic, Stage 1, Stage 2 single prize vs. multi prize. tbh I wouldn't be surprised if power creep continues to be a factor. Pokémon Standard is still very big since cards are legal for about 1 year longer on average compared to...say, the MTG model, which means that newly released Pokémon sets are always less consequential than new MTG sets to their respective Standard formats.

For me, the 2008-2010 segment was the best. There were still tons of decks roaming around that had multiple stage 2 lines and multiple support evolution lines in them. The format had god tier draw support and consistency cards as well. I think the worst part of the format was the likelihood of getting donked which really sucked since tournaments were best of one at that time I believe.

I used to heavily play the card game online when I graduated high school and created a unique deck based around salamance that only had salamance in the deck. The idea was to reshuffle abunch to get a starter card, then the opponent would always take all the extra starting cards and turn one I'd have a Wally a double dragon energy and turn 2 have a salamance that used the 20x the amount of cards your opponent had which of course since they'd still have a whole hand full of cards from me reshuffling would instantly wipe their deck

We can say that your reading of the situation in 26:00 is great and accurate. The adition of VSTARs moved to meta to VSTARs vs VMax, both 1 stage evolutions. Now, with the Scarlet and Violet sets, they will probably bring back a meta more similar to the GX era, in which multiprizers evolve from normal pokemon instead of from multiprizers.
@monte_2000
@monte_2000 Год назад
Seeing this now after 2 years it’s crazy how you got exactly right in terms of evolution for the game. ex are back, and now was back to evolution dual prize Pokémon. VSTARs even provided a sort of power creep with slightly less HP, but arguably better attacks and abilities while also being only worth 2 prizes.

I think the basic issue is that the Pokemon TCG keeps putting consistency cards that favor big basics (Professor's Research and Quick Ball being the best examples) in formats where big basics are already the best threats. Running a Stage 2 deck is a lot more palatable in a format where the best draw supporter is Cynthia, the best Pokemon search is Comms, and shuffling dead cards away doesn't come at the cost of playing a worse supporter than the decks who get to discard their hand to draw 7 and don't care about losing any of the pieces in it. The part where basic Pokemon contribute to this consistency in the form of cards like Shaymin-EX, Dedenne-GX, and Crobat V just exacerbates the problem. When decks have to run Stage 1 engines like Octillery or Zebstrika to draw cards, they can't just run their basic attacking line, 4 Quick Balls, and then slap in more draw power that their Quick Balls can find.

I played competitively during the GX era because i liked the mechanics of GX as opposed to EX. Once they released the tag team pokemon they did exactly what I didn't like about the EX era, having basic pokemon be the norm, and Vmax seems to have almost broken the game... I was planning on getting back into the game, but it looks like the format is more broken now than it was when i left The format seemed so healthy with sun and moon I'm not sure why they reverted back to what it seems like a lot of players didnt like about the tcg.

I feel like the biggest issue with a lot of the cards now-a-days is the big damage attacks or massive hp doesn't come with any sort of drawbacks. Like in the old days, basically all the "abilities" couldn't be used if they were affected by a special condition. I feel like the game could be more balanced if attacks that had massive damage came with a massive drawback. Not just "This pokemon cannot attack on the next turn" because that just gets negated with switching out. If they wanted to make that effect a true detriment, then it also needs have a line of text that says "This pokemon also cannot retreat by detaching energy or by an effect of a Trainer card on your next turn." I felt like Tag Teams could be balanced if their hp was no different than a regular gx pokemon (around 210-250 at most for cards like MagiLord). Zacian V could have been more balanced if Intrepid Sword made you discard all cards that weren't metal energy rather than just "draw 3 with a potential for energy acceleration as well". Brave Blade could also be more like the games and only do 230 against VMAX and maybe just 160 regularly. Then, Zacian doesn't even 1 shot Dedenne (cause of resistance) and has to have Altered Creation to be able to 1 shot 2 prizers. TLDR: The power creep can be dialed back if more serious detriments were added to abilities, HP, or attacks. The reason power creep is so out-of-control is because there are no serious drawbacks to the increases in power level.

OK this Pokémon cannot attack next turn, or you cannot use this attack next turn was a minor negative anyway. (just cut 10 or 20 damage and not even need this effect) Discard energy was huge draw back. But gains a lot more attack boost from normal Again how many hp/price give up have the new cards? 110.(stage one and 90 from tag team) single price Pokémon had 130... The problem is that when a single price Pokémon attacked lose all cards. So from single price need cheap attacks with ok damaged (120 from one energy or 160 from 2 is fine even if stage one).or even better huge combo attacks (90 damage x special effect) this was massive 300 damage. Not bad from single price attacker. And why not see tones single price Pokémon now? Adp kills them all. The rest cards is really balanced to my eyes.

I think a possible solution to this would be to make their power conditional. For example, we introduce a new 2 prize pokemon called Sequence Pokemon or S Pokemon for short. Every S Pokemon can be played as basic but there around the same strength as a stage 2 typically is. Still 2 prize cards, has the rule box, all that. However, you also have the option to complete their sequence. You do that by playing Charizard S on a stage 2 Charizard. If you do there's a sequence complete rule box that says they get a HP and attack boost based on the number of cards under them (or in the sequence). Like Mewtwo S would have only 1, so it get +30 HP and +20 to all attacks, whereas Charizard S would have 3, so it get +90 HP and +60 to all attacks, something like that. You could also bring in stuff like Mega Mewtwo S, which could add to the sequence or let you upgrade directly from Mewtwo S instead, that kind of thing. Regardless though, they also get to use their S Power, which is their strongest attack or best ability. If you play a Pokemon S as a basic, it doesn't get any of that but you get to play essentially a stage 2 as a basic Pokemon. So you either get a good Pokemon quickly or wait a bit to get a great one. Also could effect whether you want to play stuff like Rare Candy too (no Charmeleon so only Charmander and Charizard are in the sequence now). I think that decision making would help a lot with the meta myself and make for some interesting strategies.

In addition to being huge basics with high consistency that take up little deck space, it annoys me that the most relevant Tag-Teams reward committing all your resources to a single card. Usually that would come with the drawback of having an empty board when that Pokemon is knocked out, but since ADP and PikaRom's attacks flood your board with energy straight out of the deck while also dealing high damage, there's essentially no drawback to focusing all your early resources on a single card. I think the speed of energy acceleration is another aspect of power creep that's spiked recently with cards like ADP, PikaRom, Welder, Zacian, and Tapu Koko Prism Star.

@leviwilliams9511
@leviwilliams9511 3 года назад
@@dimitriskontoleon6787 It's true that there's always been big energy acceleration, I mean Blastoise has been rain dancing all the way since base set, but what I think has been subject to power creep is not so much the amount of energy acceleration, but the speed. All the Pokemon you mentioned were evolutions, which are inherently slow and inconsistent, and even with the two supporters, Blacksmith wasn't consistently online until late game, and Kiawe was only really a powerful option first turn, since it ended your turn immediately. Compare that to the cards I mentioned, which are all fast, consistent basics or turn one quick acceleration, and I think there is quite a difference. Take even Frosmoth and the new Cherrim for example, they can accelerate tons of energy starting turn two or three, but if PikaRom's already tag bolting or ADP's already ultimate raying, it's kinda too late. Anyway, I don't really think energy accel is at the forefront of power creep, I was just kind of mentioning it as an afterthought on top of my usual complaining about the design of Tag-Teams.
@MagnaDrake
@MagnaDrake 3 года назад
@@leviwilliams9511 Agree. The problem lies in that Pikarom and ADP deals decent damage, enough to two shot other Tag Teams and VMaxes, sometimes one shotting squishy 2-prizers, while at the same time ramping many energy to the board. Usually when we see attacks that accelerate energy to the board, it either deals little to no damage whatsoever, or deal enough damage but doesnt ramp that much, never both until Pikarom showed up. Solgaleo-GX's Turbo Strike is a bit of an outlier, but it was on a Stage 2 2-prizer that itself need a whole lot of resources to set up.

Im making a Cube and balancing have been a nightmare, but in my investigation I've seen that I tent to pick attackers from the 2004-2011 and supporters from 2008-2011/2016-2018 many great abilities. Its awesome to see a graphic of all that information (hp/damage). Thanks! (I hope thay go down in hp and damage so single price evo can be great again. Morr opcion yo win!)

Single prizere still work for a cube and you can ask people to calc up/down the HP of some cards to balance them out, so you can still enjoy playing with the older/newer cards, though it is annoying to track them but well-made proxies with different HP/dmg can do

@@NOLOAF-AR theirs been one or two with 3 attacks but all really bad and not nearly as interesting. i feel like Pokemon tried to appeal to a wider community of younger audiences by printing big flashy centerpieces and gimmicks, such as tag teams and vmax, over creative substance and thought (though i will admit, the early sets of s+m were really good, plenty of gx with roughly ex hp and nothing terribly broken.it all really changed with tag teams)

@@NOLOAF-AR they're super rare now and when they do come out they're super lame. the last 3 attack card was during sun and moon and it was literally doo-doo. sadly, the meta for card attacks are a low-energy small attack that might have a small bit of support or utility to them, and having a second attack with 3-5 energy cost that often does good damage or mediocre damage with a decent additional bonus.

Another thing that annoys me deeply is how we have cards like alolan ninetales that is "imune against ex and gx damage" and balance out the game because forces the oponent to not relly too much on big damagers, but than a new set comes and than the game is like "Doesnt matter if V didn't existed back than, if it doesnt say V you're taking the hit" Like yo just make some cards that is completly imune to any promo card (V,Vmax,GX,EX whatever) so it gives counters and avoif promo card spamming

They need to revert to Basics being support, and Stage 2s being really good and stage 1s being helpful and mediocre. Somehow, they were dumb enough to revert it to having basics being good and stage 1 and 2 cards being downright shit to meh. This is a very unhealthy meta. We are rewarded for being dumb simpletons using basics and punished with shit cards by using evolutions.
@matthewkuscienko4616
@matthewkuscienko4616 3 года назад
What you said is why I have taken to referring to tag teams as big stupid basics. For a basic Pokemon to have that kind of power really makes evolving Pokemon invalid; it's actually why I think that the new Hydreigon is not good: it has the ability to accelerate darkness energy, which is nice, but it would be much better on a basic Pokemon than a stage 2, of all possible things
@sabbagecavage5690
@sabbagecavage5690 Год назад
Personally the saddest part of the power creep for me is the fact that stage 2 pokemon are simply not viable anymore, certainly as attackers, because the speed of games has increased so much that you can win a game in 3-4 turns. I loved what they did with the original GX pokemon and how you had to evolve them, and I personally think the main problem with tag teams is that they act as (ironically) one-pokemon shows, with cards like pikarom being able to accelerate energy and deal damage all on a pokemon with very high hp (for the time). Shadow rider calyrex, despite being a stage one, also seems like a one pokemon show, being able to accelerate energy really quickly to pair with a powerful attack, and act as the only required draw engine all while having HP that is so high they can comfortably sit on your bench and support. Attacking pokemon should have to be supported, and big attackers should stay as big attackers, not big support pokemon as well.

TAG Team Pokémon was the real problem of power creep in a long time, big basics with huge amount of HP and crazy attacks. They were first kinda obligated to make Vmaxes more bulkier than TAG Team otherwise no one would use them (therefore no one would buy their new products) Now, a year later from the release of this video, we can see that TPCI made VStar Pokémon to tone it down the power creep that TAG Team made of: Evolution 2 prizers Pokémon with lesser HP than Vmaxes. When Vmaxes are gone from rotation (2 years from now) and all we have left are VStar, that's where the game can se it's Golden Age of Modern TCG again.

It’s funny how charizard decks in each gen had advantage an againts the mechanics of each, like example tag team era given a charizard who self get 2 energies per turn from the deck by getting two counters alike mix with the 1 per turn and additional to blender gets 5 and for his attack deals 280 to a tag team alike takes it down and even if that charizard was defeat will do it again the next one.

The reason power creep exists is the same reason VGC is doubles, it's for faster matches. It's better for making tournaments run smoothly. This is even more obvious because they seem to be dialing it back a little bit recently, as if they have found the sweet spot they want.

It’s interesting to think of the vmax Pokémon as the equivalent to mega Pokémon, but the check instead of spirit links is giving up three prize cards. Do you think they will just go with three prize stage two Pokémon? That is the current trend. Basic three prize, stage one, and then stage two three prize may be next. I hope not though 😅

The decrease in HP on 2000-2001 was a feature limited to Dark Pokémon only, and many of them had an increased damage potential (compared to non-Dark Pokémon) instead of the game-changing Pokémon Powers. Light Pokémon were the opposite with slightly higher HP but lower damage in general (but usually more utility). Sadly the power creep destroyed that fun concept when Dark Pokémon were back in Team Rocket Returns.
