Attention everyone who is watching this!! Do not pay attention to this video!!! YOU DO NOT have to remove the clutch cover or drill holes in anything... Disconnect battery first, remove the air cleaner housing to access the two bolts to the starter, remove clutch vent tube, disconnect positive wire on starter, loosen two bolts from engine case completely, its very important to leave the rear bolt in starter hole and twist starter clockwise to remove when standing on right side of machine, it's very simple. Install in reverse. Takes less then 15 minutes.
Worked in a Polaris dealer for 10 years. Did many starters without removing the CVT. The lower bolt can come out by gently prying out on the rear plastic backer plate. Remove about 3 threads before putting it back in for easier removal later.. ;-) Saw and worked on many of those bikes!! Colin ;-)
I changed my starter without removing the clutches. Real pain getting it back in, but I got that bolt in. Set it in the starter then twisted in into place.
I'm glad I didn't just watch this video before I did the starter replacement or I would have done more work than needed. It's not necessary to remove the belt and clutch just to remove that one bolt on the starter. Snap On makes an extra long wrench so you can get to the bolt, it's slow goin but it's better than disassembling the opposite of the bike.
Dude thanks for the video. Perhaps it will be useful if I have to work on the drive. I know this is from long ago, but for the new viewers who read comments... DO NOT take apart your belt pullies, there is no need. Read other reviews and look at other starter replacement videos. I just did mine in about 1 hour. Take side panels off, take seat off, if you want more access remove airbox. Undo your positive from the battery (put something over the terminal or you will have sparkle). Undo your positive with a wrench (not enough head room for ratchet) from the starter all bolts are10mm (unless I am forgetting). Undo your negative, here you can use ratchet but once it is loose you can use your fingers (I could), bottom bolt loosen with a wrench and then use your fingers, if aint working out like that get a ratcheting wrench 10mm. Bottom bolt stays inside your starter as you take it out. Once all bolts are undone, take old big screwdriver or a metal bar and a hammer and hammer the old starter out from the foot brake side of the ATV (4 or 5 gentle hits did it for me). When you do take it out remember you can NOT only pivot the starter you can also rotate it, for me it was easy. Now for the replacement starter do everything in reverse minus the hammer. Do use grease on the gear side (I put inside the hole on the bendix drive as well), put some grease around the rubber seal and do wipe the shaft opening before you put the new starter in. Grease up the bottom bolt to guaranty easy next removal. In any case if I could do it (not a mechanic and just started to work on my own ATV) you can do it.
@@CruiserMac excellent work! I also like disassembling and reassembling the motor assembly for my longboard for maintenance. Also checking the bolts haven't sheered off. That'd be bad at high speed.
for those needing to do this you can leave the entire clutch assembly alone.remove the cluth vent tube and then the starter bolts, there will be just enough room to turn the starter clockwise and then pull out.
+rigsby556 i have a 97 polaris sportsman 400 4x4 2 stroke and im new to 2 stroke so where can i find the oil dip stick? i know where to drain the oil but i see no dip stick at all? also where is the tranny dip stick? im pretty sure this model doesnt have an oil filter? i hear people say you can use car tranny fluid on atvs and also use car tranny oil for the 4x4 hubs? can you tell me whats the best oil to use for each use? thanks
I just changed my starter on my 500 sportsman and you can change the starter without taking the clutch assembly off, all you need is some patience and a long I believe it is an 8mm wrench

Just stopping by to let you know you do not have to remove the clutch to do this. The starter can be changed without doing that much work. Great video just trying to save you some time the next go around
0:22 wrong you do not need to take all that shit off to get the starter off I took my starter off with a small wrench and put it back on the other day also if you need to start one of these you can wrap something around the clutch and pull it and it will start without a pull starter and without electric start if for some reason you need to start it to move it or something until you can get the starting problem fixed but you definitely don’t need to pull your clutch off to get to your starter just use a small wrench I believe it’s a 10 mm just need to be patient and not strip it out
