Today at JWS we are performing a complete valve job on a Polaris 500 cylinder head. This engine was introduced back in 1996 and is still used today. This particular head is from a 2009 Polaris ranger EFI that suffered an oil pump failure due to water intrusion. The 425 version has the many of the same components so this video would apply to those as well. Additional videos will be uploaded soon that will show the bottom end rebuild as well as complete engine re-assembly. Thanks for watching! Good video didn't know that you could put new valves in and not have to do a valve lash now, thanks for the info..

With new valves you don't have to grind them in, but setting the clearance (lash) is VERY important! Thanks for watching!

@@JWSRepairServiceLLC That is what I meant, didn't know when sitting the new valves you didn't have to seat them like that, the last I did about a year ago I did the grinding, umm, I guess for nothing, but thanks buddy, you the man...

Nice thanks for the information. So the seals for the valves wear down over time that's why they need to be replaced also? Or the rubber wears down ?

The seals are rubber and they do wear down over time, however, most of the time they fail due to overheating. Thanks for watching!

So polishing the valves and seats are not recommended? No benefit?

I wire brush the seats when I decarbonize the head, the valves are new. On modern machines (mid 1980's and up) the valve seats are heat treated and coated. If you grind in or "lap" the valves you will remove the hardened coating, which will cause premature valve seat wear and require head replacement. It has been switched up basically, now the valve itself is the wear item rather than the seat.

didn't you put the valve spring in upside down on the last one @ the 20:43 mark in video?

I did, it was corrected prior to installation on the engine. Thanks for watching!
