To Use the Camera Shutter Button or the App Shutter Button, That is the Question?
Ay, there’s the rub.
Trying to hold the Polaroid Now+ in one hand and an iPhone with the Polaroid app in the other hand, all while composing a photo through the view finder with one eye and positioning a finger over the app’s shutter release using the other eye…what could possibly go wrong?
But wait! If the app has transferred my aperture and shutter speed choices to the camera, why can’t I use the shutter release on the camera?
Take a look at this video and all will be revealed.
Alas, poor Polaroid!

I rarely comment on videos, but this is such a huge help. I can’t believe Polaroid doesn’t explain this more clearly… luckily I’ve only wasted a couple of pictures, but this is very important to know to prevent underexposing or overexposing pictures. If my understanding is correct, the shutter button on the camera uses some default setting independent of whatever you may have set on the app? Therefore, if I change shutter and aperture in manual mode to ensure the light meter is at 0, I have to press the button on the app to ensure that it gets taken properly. The button on the camera will do something entirely different…

You are correct. It is best to use the app shutter button if you have set your settings using the app.

Appreciate for doing this. I was wondering earlier why this manual mode so trippy yesterday when I got my now+. Really helpful experiment and explanation.

As far as my understanding, manual settings can be save as shortcuts by press the plus key in the app. That way the camera will indicate red light upon the plus button, when we press shutter on the camera it will use the setting which we saved. Correct me if I am wrong

I haven't used my Now+ for a while so I can't say for sure that what you suggest will work. My recollection is that the saved setting were very specific to a particular f-stop/shutter speed combination. Someone needs to test this!

To set a shortcut: Go to your favorite mode with the app. Press the + button at the top of the screen. The mode is now saved in your camera. To activate it, long-press the + button on the camera. The + button mode indicator will turn red to show that the shortcut is active. To deactivate it, press the + button again.

I think it's my first time commenting on a video. I also bought the Now+ like a month ago and spent the whole film box to came to this amazing video. i actually wondered, why are exposure setting on a camera itself then? in the first 2 pictures, did you use the neutral exposure (-)?

Thanks for the video! I have experience using the I-1 with the app (essentially the predecessor of the Polaroid app), and it is the worst experience. Of course, you could use a tripod, but, for example, taking a snapshot of a precise moment is nearly impossible, since you are looking through the viewfinder and have to press a button on your smartphone screen - ugh

You are right, the Now+ is a fun camera and you should be able to use it to its fullest without having to set up a tripod.

I wonder if this is something that can be fixed with an update. The camera clearly gets the settings info when the app shutter button is pressed but maybe there is a way to implenment a "double shutter button press" function where the app shutter button only pushes the settings onto the camera and pressing the physical shutter button actually takes the photos. This would make things so much easier. Any thoughts on why something like this isn't already implemented because it really seems like a no brainer

Hi Subij. I have no idea why Polaroid can't update this. It seems like it should be a simple software update. It's the same for implementing ½ f-stop settings, something that looks obvious and should be easy to do in software.

Mr David, it is also extrange that the fisrt (1/60, with cam buttom) and the third picture (1/60 with app buttom) have the same setting but not the same result? I see people complains a lote (about the Polaroid now + model) because of the over exposure.

Hi again Raul. The issue you have noted is due to shifting light conditions. Unfortunately, when I started the test it was mid-afternoon and by the time I had taken the first two pictures, waited for them to develop and set up for the remaining pictures, the sun had set significantly and put most of the foreground in shadow. So the the first and third photos look quite different. However, if you look at the concrete piers on the bridge, they are in full sun and the light is the same for all photos.

Thank you for this! I was looking all over for this info. I found very similar results when testing the Flash Power of my OneStep+. I'd adjust the flash power in the app and no matter what I set to my flash meter always came back with the same result and the photos looked the same. Once I switched to triggering from the app itself, then I started seeing the results I expected. Booo to Polaroid Originals for not correcting this, and retaining the settings in camera.

Hello Mr Dadvid, thanks for giving us so value information. The way you explane us using the videos is really grateful to see (considering you experience). I see this "new" Polaorid models are having many issues from Amazon reviews buyers. They complain really black photos or really dark ones. From your testing, my theroy is these problems are because this new moldes (polaroid step 2, polaroid now, polaroid now +) are just too simple and they don't have manual setting (as in your SX70 model). Also, the quality (logistic and temperatures) of the film are really a problem, where people sepnds 5 or 6 pics from the 8 pics package to get one good shot. Coudl you please recomend us Polaroid models that a amateur person can use to have good results? Thanks and greetinns from Lima, Peru.

Hi Raul. Greeting from Winnipeg, Canada! You are correct, the cameras currently offered by Polaroid are simple. But that is by design; their cameras are geared to their perceived market base. That said, the Now+ at least offers some control over how your photos turn out, and there is an option to take a picture and then correct the exposure (whether it's due to the camera or the film or both) in manual mode on the app to get it right the second time. Hopefully it will just take one or two photos to get a good one! I think a lot of the problems with exposure seen in reviews are using the camera in auto exposure mode. I haven't noticed that with my Now+ but I have heard from others that have returned faulty cameras to Polaroid air exchange for a new one that corrects the problem. Unfortunately, other than the Now+ the only other option to get a manual exposure camera is the Mint670-S at a huge price jump.

I know there’s a way to store one setting of your choice on the camera, from the app. I’m wondering if you set that up would the shutter button on the camera work the way the user intended, without the need to use the app to take the picture? This solution seems kinda situational and not very easy to do on the fly. This is a pretty lame flaw on Polaroids behalf. Especially for someone who’s just trying to get into tho hobby. I’ve been trying to adjust things on the app come to find out it might not even be working.

I haven't really checked this out recently but my recollection is that the setting stored on the camera would only work for pictures taken in exactly the same lighting situation. I would stick to using the app for settings and shutter release or rely on the camera for settings and shutter. Avoid using both for one shot. Hope this helps. Polaroid does not make it easy...

Thanks for this video, it confirms my suspicions from my experience last weekend using Now+ camera shutter button in M with optical slaved studio strobes. I need to test and see if I program M settings for the long press of the + button, if those are transferred to the camera shutter button.

hello i have bought a polaroid now plus and i found out that it overexposed almost every exposure when i used the shutter on the polaroid. though i found out that if you use manuel mode and lowerd the ev with one step it exposed okay do you have any tips on which settings to chose when taking pictures in sunlight. thanks

Hi Gold Granny! You might want to try using the flash button on the camera to adjust the exposure value of the Polaroid Now+. Hold the flash button down to enter EV mode on the film counter display. Press it again to toggle between brighter (+1/2 EV), neutral, or darker (-1/2 EV). Leave it for 7 seconds. The selected bar will blink to show the EV value has been saved. Hopefully that works. If not, I have heard that others have had a similar problem and that the only remedy is to contact Polaroid and see if they will exchange it for a new camera. Best of luck!

@@matteobusatto9758 Thanks Matteo. I would argue that spending a little bit more for the Now+ is still worth it. As long as you know its shortcomings and can work around them, I think the added creative controls are worth it.
