If Mat tells you to avoid a car, then you know it has done miserably. Such a shame tho, since it has one of the most gorgeous exteriors in the game (minus the back of course).
@@memorimusic420 this ain’t lmao. You could almost get a continental gt or a 911 turbo s for this ripoff volvo. Apart from design, it’s horrible in every single aspect.
@@Fldldk owww hell nah and no you def cant get a continental for 100K and bein a 4 cyl doesnt automatically make a car shit watch misha charoudin his review on in
@@scotianbank not a good Volvo, just a nice looking Volvo, you cany even use the 600hp, can't even do a donut with the stability control off a nice car for 50K but definitely not for 140K
@@scotianbank that comment makes no sense whatsoever. If you buy an NSX or a GT-R, you don’t wave it away with ‘oh it’s still a Honda / Nissan.. ‘ 🤷🏼♂️ . A performance car is a performance car, no matter what the badge says.
@@stevendufour I think you are failing to get my intended message. I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with it being a Volvo, but you have to keep my message in the context of it being a reply to the original messages by Mark Knight. What I'm saying is, they can't justify charging 140k for a Volvo. Sure, it has nice performance, but the rest of the car is comparable in terms of quality, parts, and materials, to vehicles that cost half of what this costs. And that particular statement is I believe, pretty much the accepted opinion, even Matt says so in the video.
Turbocharged, supercharged, petrol and electrified..... what could possibly go wrong. Hopefully the next version will also add a combo of diesel, turbine, hydrogen, steam and coal powerplants
It's a hybrid, also a pure Coupé car, and also a pure EV, thus it has engine mode selection. But the price point isn't good(£140,000 pounds for this car.😂🤣. Lol.)
@@marksawyer6242 no it’s easy, you put the car seat in the front. This car has no rear seats, it’s just a green screen covering the back. No car manufacturer would put in a seatbelt like that
*This must be one of the most underwhelming reviews. Not because of Matt, but the car is such a disappointment for the price - even if it were half the cost.*
The resell value of this car would be absolutely hilarious as well. You’d be lucky to recoup half your initial purchase cost. There just isn’t a market for it. Anybody leaning towards something like this would just go Tesla for the most part. I am bamboozled 😭
What drifting? He was sliding due to lack of grip at best. I did better drifts with my X5 M50d. And that's a freaking Diesel engine. This thing may(!) have 609hp on paper but this car is less than a second faster than my X5 with more than 200hp more and without being a brick in the wind. Also, there are cars with way less hp which are way faster. I don't even get the concept of this. The brakes are totally over. Hybrids do not usually use breaks at all in daily use and this thing can't do much more than that. That it's not limited to 180km/h is the only thing they did properly, but why? The looks, gorgeous! The sound, performance, quality, price tag, just garbage.
@@M3dicayne the car does 100-200km/h in just over 8 seconds... faster than an Audi RS6. There’s no way your X5 is faster. I have driven the polestar 1 on German Autobahn and the car is amazing! Just watch Misha Charoudin’s video of him driving the Polestar 1 on the Nurnburgring.
@@LvH_racing Funny thing is, I am from Germany. I have driven a couple of cars and saw a ton of Volvos. Believe me, I like the brand, especially the ultra reliable old ones with 5 cylinders. But this car, especially its engine, is not worth half the price tag. And I seriously doubt the 8 seconds. The mismatched engine setup will doubtfully reach that time. I mean, I found this video and it just shows how it loses anything: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bOJntUtd4gM.html (it has English subs).

Mat seems to be have a double Agenda, especially he praised PS1 & 2 in previous video’s😎
That's the advantage of a massively popular channel like carwow; Matt can speak his mind about any car without fearing reprisals/boycotting from a given car manufacturer. Keep it up, Matt!
I think the main reason he can speak more freely is that the RU-vid channel isn't the source of income ,the carwow website is and as the channels main function is to advertise that website the integrity of the reviews are more important than any sponsorship deals
Ik it is such a shame tho. Way to over priced for what u are getting and Volvo should be proud of its cars and get rid of Polestar and make this a Volvo
@@georgedowns4034 It's an S90 minus 2 doors essentially. A bit disappointed that Volvo isn't trying to make sportier cars anymore. They embraced the safety mantra to an extreme degree
This feels like the designers came up with what they thought were great ideas, but then never tested them in the real world before going into production.
@@Ren_1090 That's because even though they're own by Geely, Volvo is very much still their own company with their decision and what not, while sharing their experience to Geely's own product in favor of monetary safety.
15:50 Volvo owner here- In my 2019 S60 you just have to hold down the ESC button for about 10 seconds. Should be the same in the polestar, try it if you get a chance!
I love how honest Matt is about this car, it really is breath of fresh air. Most journalists would never show how you constantly knock your elbow on the centre console. Well done Matt!
If I were a car journalist/reviewer, I'd very much honestly need a lot of courage to be as brutally honest and transparent as Matt....I can imagine it being hard to say all the truth when a car is REALLY not all that good. My respect, Matt.
Some context which Mat didn’t mention in the video: this car’s origins are in the 2013 Volvo Concept Coupe, which was a modern reinterpretation of the P1800 (hence that quirky rear deck). It was intended to be the launched as the Volvo C90, but management canned it. The design was instead recycled for this Polestar 1. The tiny production volume (and the fact it’s basically a concept car you can buy) goes some way in explaining why it is so expensive. I think Mat is being a little harsh - this is not a serious competitor to a Porsche or Aston, it’s a limited edition curiosity for collectors who want something different.
This is a brilliant way to some up the car, it’s more of a “spearhead” for the brand as a platform for them to launch much more practical and sensible cars like the polestar two, which by all accounts from other car journalists is excellent value for money.
He has been honest with us. But just if you are interested, I have a 2013 watch that I could sell it to you, is limited edition concept watch for 100000 pounds.
Oh! Cool story. In a fantasy dream world where money grows on trees and there is no real reference for value or performance. Luckily this is the real world and there is a reference for value and performance and it’s called a 911.
@@arvindjijiantony4882 , so rare it will become a collector car soon with limited production units only. It will not be in the top most deprecating car at all. Only the super rich can afford this polestar I now .
Ultimate architect's car. Beautiful and understated with a design-focused perspective. Everything from the font they use to the stitching on the seats I love. When the video cut to the Bently I almost vomited. Just a pile of beige leather and endless chrome and ornamentation. I would have the Polestar in a heartbeat over all those alternatives.
A bad one. There are way better cars for that kind of money. I still don't get the 609hp combined. Maybe they should never have added them together. Seriously. Take a look at the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid. Same concept, waaaay better performance, sound, quality, daily usefulness, similar price tag.
Because that's what they do, they were always selling beefed-up Volvos. You know that Polestar was sport/tuning branch of Volvo before they were both bought by Geely?
Volvo do sell an XC90 for 100k. Also polestar was like AMG or M or RS when it was Tuning Volvos, but now it’s turned into a a separate company like Brabus or Alpina. Volvo make great cars tho but Polestar shouldn’t have turned into a separate company because it doesn’t have the experience or technology that Volvo has
Silly comment, there been changes in shares etc, Polestar is now a pure electric car but under the new name Cyan. Cyan is a racingteam in STCC, if you cant see it the P1 sure is a Volvo based on the classic P1800, the best proportions you will ever see, somewhere behind the scenes they had to split, i can agree the price is silly but probly quite expensive to develop, but talking about Volvo as anything else than a high quality car is for fanboys aged at 9-15
This is the 1st avoid I have ever seen... I'm feeling kinda scared actually, like Mat went from the cool teacher who loves everything to the moody teacher that absolutely hates the Kid named Polestar.
@@wiktorjaciow9815 he asked to avoid the M5 because the M340i is just as fun to drive with the 0-60 time only around a second slower which will hardly make a difference in real world driving. Plus with the touring version you get more practicality and of course much much cheaper.

@@aramzyf You're being narrow minded and missing the point. Look at it from the point of view of someone who actually has the money to buy one. They know that everyone as rich as they are could buy any car they want, could be better, could be faster, could be better looking, could have a more prestigious name, the difference is that they'll have something different, interesting and unusual. If you look at money from the mentality of a Premiership footballer, you'll always go route one and pick the obvious choice of an Aston, Porsche, Mercedes or whatever, and it's boring to buy what all these predictable people would pick. This is more of a thinking man's choice, someone with a bit more imagination, someone who wants to stand out a bit more, but still remain tasteful. Well done Volvo.
I love the way my dad's v60 feels to drive, but I don't really see how this improves significantly except that it has 600 hp. I love strong beefy cars but for everyday it feels excessive. If it costed 50k it would be a great car but I wouldn't pay more.
@@ЕмилЕфендулов In the UK the Continental GT starts from around £160,000, so is only £20,000 more give or take the spec and if you manage to get a good deal from the dealerships. Guess it depends where you’re living but he’s making a comparison based on UK prices
I had the same thought Matt did. This should just be a Volvo coupe, costing less than 100k pounds. This car has its design, but pretty much nothing else.
So... £139k for a 4-cylinder. Righhhht. For this much money, you can get an almost fully specced RS6 (+Milltek exhaust, damn you EU for putting the PPF) and have real AWD for smoking everything come rain or shine. Needless to say that a 4-cylinder is the most common thing in a car nowadays. Hell, even the RS3 can smoke this thing in a straight line and costs nearly a third of this absurd price tag. edit: Who on earth thought of exposing those orange cables in a glass case in the boot? Apart from stealing valuable boot space and excluding the rear seat pass-through to the cabin, they also look horrid! One of the stupidest ideas ever! Even the low-mounted rear view camera makes more sense than that cable packaging!

@@MY-zj8pb 6 out of 10 people would still take a Jaguar. A better example would have been Maserati. People detest that car like it's the plague or something.
9:09 Low speed brake creaking sound is because of regenerative braking. It's the same with the I-PACE. I don't know why Polestar cars use CHEAP STICKERS instead of actually painting or using proper decals for labels and signs. JLR uses them but in pre-production models NOT final products.
That would be the Polestar 2. I guess the Polestar 1 was mainly to get people talking about the brand and compared to the Polestar 1, the Polestar 2 might seem like a bargain?
The power isn't what's jacking the price up so hard, it's the carbon fibre body panels they went with to try and mitigate the atrocious weight. But I agree, a normal T8 drivetrain with aluminum panels would result in a more affordable and overall better car.
I was going to buy this but I decided to go for the s60 recharge polestar instead. 1/3rd of the price, more practical for passengers, comfier, bigger boot and it’s almost as fast. I’m so glad I did.
@@Luckyjo21 you’d get a hell of a lot more car for your money though. Throw in an extended warranty and you’d still have change from your 140k, plus no headache when it inevitably does break down 😂
Nah, the design of a Volvo sedan is already reused in this car. I'm not saying Volvo's design is bad, I just mean that this car already reused Volvo's design, so it doesn't deserve that credit.
Walked into a Polestar dealer/advertisement stand. Was told this car did 0-60 sub 3 seconds (having a laugh there) and the guy I talked to said that it was so collectable, that it would be worth near £300,000 in a few years time. This car seems like the ultimate investment for the ultimate pleb.
