Polestar 3 first look: Possibly the best looking new EV for 2023

Following its official reveal late last year, Polestar recently brought its first EV SUV - the Polestar 3 - to New York City for its North American debut. However, while it shares the same underlying platform as the Volvo EX90, Polestar has adjusted its design to create what might be the best-looking new EV slated to go on sale in 2023. Unfortunately, we couldn’t take it for a drive, but we were able to get a closer look at its styling and some of the fancy tech and features the Polestar will have when it starts hitting the road later this year in Q4.

Beside the impressive battery and charging specs, I appreciate the charge port placement! You can easily take advantage of the supercharger network here in Europe as it uses CCS as well! Without blocking other stalls, that is! I’ve seen things get a little heated when people in the Netherlands kept pulling up to a charger only for one extra stall to be blocked by a Skoda Enyaq due to its passenger-side port and Tesla’s short supercharger cables. I just wish the network were fully opened up, so you can reliably navigate to any supercharger and expect to be able to charge, rather than the current state, where it’s between 10 and 90% of the locations depending on the country here….

polestar has already targeted porsche in regards to their closest customer demographic. from that standpoint, pricing is in line with what they're asking for. I think we are starting to look at cars differently now that BEVs are growing in popularity. I'll put it this way, we'll look at the model y and polestar 3 in this this scenario. To me, the model y is an appliance. it gets you from point a to point b. It isn't very luxurious. It doesn't really invoke any emotions. It's just a fantastic tool for a family. Polestar is NOT trying to be a tool. it's basically an object of lust. My head says model y all day every day. but my heart wants to put a deposit down on the polestar 3.

Well you may think you're lusting for the Polestar 3 ... until you meet its even hotter cousin, the Lotus Eletre. That's started deliveries already in China, and initial reviews are drool inducing.

I mean the performance Teslas, including the Model Y, have pretty insane acceleration which involves emotion in a lot of people lol. The performance Polestar 3 is basically as fast as the regular LR Model Y. If these two cars were the same price I’d lean Polestar, but the $84k starting price is killer. No tax credit either unlike the Model Y.

I’m really hoping the true range is better than the current estimates. I would prefer it to be minimum 500Km for the performance, rather than the estimated 434km. Main reason is winter range lose. I live in Toronto Canada. Gets damn come here in the winter. -20 to -30 Celsius is common for Jan / feb

Drove the PS2 several times. Caught a lot of people off guard on the road with its acceleration, speed, handle and looks, including the Tesla guys 😂 I was truly impressed with the handling and going around curves at higher speeds than compared to Tesla. And the sound system was much better also. Only thing I didn’t like was the charging. Takes twice as long as a Tesla. Hope they fix that in the newer models.

It's worse than twice as long since the efficiency of the Polestar is a lot lower compared to the Tesla model Y. If we're talking about charging speed it's fair to say that kW and kWh are meaningless. You want to look at how many miles/km you can charge in a certain period of time. I think 20-25 minutes is a fair timeframe. The low efficiency of the Polestar really hurts that number.

@@MattCasters yea it’s brutal. Drove one way for about 90 miles and I needed to recharge to come back home or risk been on the side of the road. Hopefully they addressed the battery issues in the newer model.

They are nice-looking, but have been around for years in "Polestar" edition Volvo's as well as all Polestar 1 cars and all Polestar 2 cars that have the Performance Pack.

A lot more, the Polestar 2 is based on an ICE platform, the P3 is on an all dedicated EV platform.

Nce to see Polestar have upgraded the main screen fom the clunky looking Volvo-esque display on the P2. And as said by others here nice to see the charge port is Tesla compatible. Every OEM needs to switch to this.

Do you think the build quality/solidity is higher in Volvo or Tesla? This car has the same build quality as Volvo since it is essentially sharing mostly Volvo parts and tech. Yes, Tesla has the charging infrastructure but Polestar has racing heritage so building a car with handling feel is in their DNA. This car will feel substantially different than a Tesla. And the Tesla X is more expensive and this car is more comparable to an X than a Y, which is a more downmarket car than the Polestar 3.

Tesla is opening up its charging infrastructure. It’s becoming less of a competitive advantage. About a year ago, I thought I was going to buy a model y or 3. After test driving them and the polestar 2, the 2 was just way more fun to drive. On paper the Teslas out performed by a significant margin, but the overall experience was nicer on the polestar 2.

@@DJPeterLo The Polestar 2 refresh is pretty significant too, since it now has enhanced efficiency and range, and also the base 2 wheel drive model is moving from FWD to RWD, so that should make it a nice cheaper but still sporty option as well.

This is really nice, but it has honestly been a struggle finding a more uniquely designed, better executed, and overall superiorly packaged EV than the Cadillac Lyriq _especially_ for the price point ($65k). The Cadillac Lyriq is the new standard for the segment IMO.

Lyriq is at a decent price point in the US, but GM is also trying to sell it for $65k in China, and no one is buying them, since there are plenty of competitive luxury SUVs on the Chinese market at that price and lower. For instance the Lyriq is being outsold 10 to 1 right now by Li Auto's L8 and L9 models, which are 3 row luxury SUVs which actually cost less than the Caddy. And Li just launched their actual Lyriq competitor, the 2 row Li L7, which starts at $45k, a full 20k less than the Lyriq. It is quite likely that by this time next month, Li Auto will be outselling the Lyriq at a 30 to 1 ratio.

DUDE!!! i'm counting down the days till later on this year when they announce it. I'm currenlty driving a polestar 2 and i absolutely love it. rumor is the p4 will be on the same platform as the zeeker 001. if so, it'll be amazing.

@@suvann540i Zeekr 001 is huge actually, and essentially the same footprint as the Polestar 3. The Polestar 4 will probably be on a modified SEA platform for smaller cars, since it'll be closer in size to the about to be launched Zeekr X.

The screen White text/icons on black background is just wrong. Daytime you can't see anything. Sometimes I think these people never use what they create. It's hard to believe how beautiful this car is with suck a big flaw like that.

All EV compacg SUVs will end up being compared to the Tesla Model Y, but that's a relatively cheap feeling, spartan car compared to the Volvo C40/XC40 or Polestar 2/3. You don't even get an instrument cluster in a Tesla unless you splurge for the X or S. Taking your eyes off the road to see the speedometer or nav is not fun. Overall, the cheaper Teslas (3 & Y) don't compare to the excellent driving experience that you get from Volvo or Polestar. Kia/Hyunda, Ford, VW, and the rest don't feel anywhere near as nice to drive either in my opinion. That said, I don't think the P3 offers all that much over the C40, other than the range of course. Though it is disappointing that the P3 isn't getting at least 350 miles with a battery that big. Volvo milage ratings tend to be conservative vs other EVs though, so I would expect real world figures to be respectable.

I wish Engadget covered the CRITICAL side note of: Tesla states that they have 330 miles of range however theirs is typically much lower than that given the car saves the battery by not allowing it to fully recharge, Different EV manufacturer's may or may not give you the real world range so polestar might equal or pass the Tesla.

It's built for as much storage space as possible and not aerodynamics. SUV hatchbacks are not aerodynamic, but that's what is selling right now.

No. Volvo was a Swedish owned and operated company for decades. Now they are Chinese owned and polestar is a Chinese company made using Volvo as a base as they own Volvo and can do whatever they want. Still, polestar is about as Swedish as a churro

It sure is a very good looking EV. Much better than any of Tesla's offerings which kind of look like blobs on wheels with poor fit and finish and high price tags. Good purchases are not so much about what you pay, but what you get in return for your money.

Why do EV companies have to focus so much on power output? For most people around the world, 150-200 bhp is enough. This could increase the range, reliability and affordability of EVs by so much. These cars are for the elite. Let's stop lying to ourselves that EVs are about sustainability when we only build inaccessible cars.

There are plenty of inexpensive EVs with the size/power/price of a Honda Civic, they are just all in China. BYD is still projecting to sell 3.6 million plug in vehicles this year, of which nearly 2 million will be full BEVs, most of which are quite reasonably priced. Just today they unveiled their cheapest car, the Seagull, a small 5 door A segment city hatchback which will start at around $10k USD in China.

Yes. Although it took quite a while for CarPlay to become available as a free OTA on the Polestar 2. Carplay is also available on many other carmakers which are also switching to Android Automotive as their base infotainment systems.

I dunno. Even with that front spoiler (wut) the face still looks very flat. The drag coefficient can't be that low.

You actually can get appreciable Cd with a flatter face, it's just a matter of airflow management. The overall surface area does remain something to contend with, however. Polestar says the Cd for this 3 is 0.29, which is actually fairly decent for this form factor.

@@sajidbutt2680 as mentioned, 0.29 for an SUV is not poor, it's good. Cars commonly have a Cd > 0.30, and many SUVs exceed 0.40. The Audi e-tron is 0.28, as is the upcoming Kia EV9. The upcoming Volvo EX90 is 0.29. There are few exceptions (BMW iX, Tesla Model X).

The price makes it DoA. No way anyone is getting a polestar 3 over a bmw or audi or even tesla for that matter.

I mean, when it's all said and done, this car will be on the road first. so polestar will be the "first" to introduce it. dodge just has a concept currently.

No. Too low for this car. The Polestar 4 will start around $60K. this is the flagship of Polestar.

It just means that when you adjust the mirrors, the entire housing moves and not just the mirror inside a fixed frame
