This week we're taking a trip down memory lane and recalling my first week as a police officer back in 2001. In my first week, I definitely got thrown in at the deep end. Dealing with dead bodies, domestics & making my first arrest within 9 minutes of being on duty for the first time, I had to learn a lot in my first week on the job!
I also give my advice to those police officers just starting on the job and share advice I was given.

As a hospital porter, I deal with death regularly and this includes working in and around the mortuary. I totally understand the humour, especially from undertakers etc.

My uncle was a captain now (Lt Col) in the Irish Guards, he told me a story of one of his lads was killed by a sniper so he radioed in, they were in a 3 story building (top floor) he was told the fastest way to get him out was to discretely throw him from an upstairs window, well he wasnt having that so they wrapped him in a blanket and there was an elevator but could hold one man, so they propped him inside and pushed the button and raced down the stairs only to find the lift had beat them and he was half in half out of the lift, the same guy who lost his life was cremated and his ashes were put into fireworks and friends and family gave him a good send off.

It's fascinating watching you on recent repeat's of Interceptors, compared with you on here. I love seeing you laugh so much, despite the PTSD. It's something I've struggled with & although the intrusive thoughts & flashbacks are much rarer, I'm not quite back at the laugh till I almost pee my panties stage yet. You're a good man Ben, so keep laughing its truly the best medicine there is.

I've yet to have a shift that has topped my first day on shift. I was due to start at 0700 but tipped out early to my first job where I got my first lock up at 0649. I remember how strange but exciting that first blue light run was. I was due to finish at 1700 and didn't get off until 2000 and was due back in the next day at 0700. I remember thinking "what have I gotten myself into" 😅 now years later looking back fondly wishing for that new sense of excitement all over again but in reality being used to 95% of the jobs I deal with feeling familiar to so many previous. There's still the great times chasing burglars and getting proactive stuff done though. I got told the same thing from day one - be a sponge. Still soaking up new info every day! Love these videos Ben, please keep more stories from your days coming 🖤

Hi Ben. I have only just discovered your channel and have been binge watching what I`ve mist. I took early retirement from the West Yorkshire Police at the end of October last year after 17 years service. I wont say in what role in the public domain but yeah, almost everything you say in your videos is totally relatable. Even in my role.... I say almost everything as I don`t know what it is actually like to be in Traffic. Love your stories, both personal and professional. As you have said in other videos one of the things I miss most is the people I worked with. Some of the things I don`t miss are the "Stupid people" as you so eloquently put it. The fact that everything is so tightly wrapped up in red tape these days that you cant go for your morning dump without recording it on NICHE because someone has nicked the loo roll....😁 and newly appointed or changes in supervision that insist on changing things just to make their mark despite the fact that it worked perfectly well before, or the SLT changing something back to what was proven not to work very well three years ago🤨(tongue in cheek) But for the most part I loved it. I have some lovely memories and some horrible ones too. Did you ever work with Robbo? Great bloke I thought. I look forward to more videos.. All the best

I know someone who works on the investigation side of the Job in WYPOL. Like you, I won't go into too much detail out of respect for them. They have said that exact same thing about supervision. It seems to be like a revolving door, and quite a few of the sargents and inspectors coming through at the moment are doing so with very little experience, especially if they have done the graduate fast track scheme or Police Now etc. They know the legislation and can follow a manual of guidance, but are terrible at actually running a shift, not to mention signing their name to anything which requires a decision making. It has got so bad on several shifts at the moment DCs who haven't even done their Part 1 are asked to "supervise" for a shift as so many of the time-served DS's are off sick with stress, or now working part-time/flexi. And this is a unit who deals with jobs which carry so much risk in that even the slightest error of judgement can result in massive repercussions as well as the obligatory investigation from the likes of PSD/IOPC. No wonder the Police nationally are struggling to recruit detectives and staff units such as prisoner processing, CID, SGU etc. Much better to stick on shift, which obviously has its own risks, but can be far less stresful as a career. Hooe you're doing well now that you're out of the Job mate. Take care and all the best for the future 👍

Me too. In the Emergency Services.... Black Humour is an essential survival tool. Some, however, go too far and they become a liability. But it is impossible to be good at your job and not be guilty of some peoples definition of "Politically Incorrect" behaviour. Sadly, I feel it is going to be the death knell for decent people to do the the jobs no-one else has the guts to do. This war on people speaking out-of-turn, or simply stating an opinion is going to backfire in a big way: Britain, for one, will be much poorer for it.

I used to me in the Ambulance Service, had very challenging times getting stretchers out of houses, many of my experiences I can not discuss with non emergency personnel, busy life met a lot of great people, I feel we made difference. (We ate so much junk food) Most common questions, have you seen dead people? Or what was the worst thing your have seen, (attempted double homicide with a knife).

I think since the beat officer was scrapped and local police who were on estates getting involved with the people and getting to know who’s who, was a great tool for the police. These days you very rarely see a officer walking around estates. But you might notice one or two in the town centres. Most stations have closedown. And these so called mega stations have come about and the local stations and support have become less involved with local communities. And the new police officers don’t get enough training not like they used to. And I think the PCSO’s are just not needed and the public feel that the trust fait and reliability are lost. We need the police 100%. But they are letting anyone in these days. And that’s why we hear of all the corruption and officers being suspended on full pay or leaving so they still get a pension. It’s just absolutely ridiculous

One year on the job and Ben's vids really inspired me to go for it. There's no job quite like it. There's loads of student officers right now. But probationers are treated quite badly and its why so many just leave in their 2 years. There's a lot of bullying and disrespect towards probationers from longer in service but the students are in demand and actually do a pretty good job.

I remember my father in laws coffin as the undertakers tried so squeeze it in through the front door( he wanted to leave from home) that was a comedy of errors hard to watch at the time wife and mother in law could'nt funny now but not then, would'nt wish it upon any one though very difficult to try and treat with dignity, he was'nt even a big bloke.
