Interesting was the life of a composer of this wonderful tune: Stanisław (Samuel) FERSZKO (b. 1914 in Łuck, d. 1990 in Miami Beach, USA). He as a "wonderful child" played piano in Warsaw under the guidance of prof. Zbigniew Drzewiecki and later studied in the Warsaw Conservatory in his piano class. In the age of 23 Ferszko composed his first operetta „Polowanie na lamparta" (The Leopard Hunt) first performed in Warsaw, in the theatre „8.30", and then in Vienna, with the German title „Salzburg Ausverkauft". Quickly, he got permanent employment in the „Heyman-Front Jazz" (dance orchestra led by Zygmunt Heyman and Julian Front), he also performed solo as a pianist in the elegant night bars „Paradis" or „FF". He became the personal accopaniator and a composer of many songs for the stage diseuses of the late 1930s: Wiera Gran, Nadieżda Bielicz and Waria Łaska. In 1937, however -- tempted by a proposition of good and permanent engagement -- he went to Palestine to play in the theatre „Małałe" in Tel Aviw. He also worked for other scenes: e.g. „Li-La-Lo" or „Ochel". Soon -- called the „Israeli Gershwin" - he became very popular in Palestine and in later Israel, his songs „Beb el bad", „Jeep" or „Moti" are often considered the tunes of the genuine Israeli folklore. In 1952, engaged by NBC, he went to USA where he composed tunes, musicals, operettas. For some time he was the director of the NY Symphony Orchestra. On the 5th anniversary of his death, the gala „in memoriam" concert in NYC gathered the audience of about 35.000.
In Poland, he will remain as the author of evergreens: „Bo to się zwykle tak zaczyna" (It's How It Usually Begins), „Gdy odejdziesz" (When You're Gone) or „Maleńka" (My Tiny Gal).
Text of „Bo to sie zwykle tak zaczyna" (It's How It Usually Begins) is the sad-ironic and sparkingly intelligent two-part philosophical mini-treaty about the birth -- and the death of love. They both begin in the same way: you are ashamed for you are going mad, you are ging nuts, you'd give everything for being one minute WITH your love (the Birth) -- and after few days, or sometimes -- even one year later - you'd give anything, for being one minute AWAY from her (it's the Death of Love). That little masterpiece of the poet Emmanuel Schlechter -- containing the bitter and the funny in the same time, eternal truth about life -- is written with wit and malancholy, having the unforgetable ending „and this is life, c'est la vie" -- which has became in Polish the popular "mot" for three generations now.
