Quick video on repairing the Polk PSW505 Subwoofer. I have had this for about 6 years and the audio output on it recently was really low. Taking it to the bench, no surprises here it had bad capacitors. After replacing all of them it was back to full audio output.
If you leave it on all the time in standby, the power supply is still running. It generates heat inside and with nowhere for it to go, the cheap capacitors just cook and go bad. Higher quality capacitors would have not failed as quickly as the cheap ones in this unit.
I would recommend replacing every capacitor in this unit with high quality 105C rated capacitors, there is around 20 in total. The three large capacitors on the switching supply generally don't go bad and mine tested good. If you wanted to replace them too, it is the right thing to do as I will do as well.
