I'm not American, I was creeped out by the American National Anthem for years because the first time i ever heard it was when I watched Poltergeist as a very young child lol
I don't know why but Carol Anne creeped me out. Did the TV just go to snow afterwards? I believe the only way to make something absolutely impossible is to believe that it is... I've never seen a ghost (but hey, I've never seen God either). Not gonna go into the technical stuff but the guy talks about it partly in the movie
@@filter4now Ryan got the facts absurdly wrong about the range static has for a tech. It can pick up a radio station but thats about it. Test Patterns have a stronger range being connected to a TV signal. As for your question some went to static but some just played Test Patterns all night or part of the night then switched off. I never seen a ghost with static but I find it has a nasty effect on me. It makes me feel cold inside and out. Check out 1979 testing then its clear when Carol Anne talks through the static why I dont trust static one bit.
That was such a brilliant idea to put this USA National anthem sign-off as the intentionnal intro for the whole plot in Tobe Hooper's POLTERGEIST. When I saw this opening the first time, I was feeling uncomfortable, slightly frightened by somewhat.. Because, this single scene was putting that fact there's something wrong in it, in the american glory. That has seemed really unusual from Spielberg if he had that idea to put the star spangled anthem presentation like this. And I believe it wasn't him. Very simple, but hugely invocant by the TV snow screen. And the haunted sphere that settling through. By "the Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "Funhouse" filmmaker, all designed by his themes and obsessions.

No because Static is a random signal whereas a test pattern is an open signal that can be hijacked by any other signal and a ghost is basically a signal so sorry Anthony your way off there
My mother was born in the 60s, way before Poltergeist ever existed. Way before that...She never liked the tv sign off. I think most people had to be creeped out by it happening so late at night which I can see it being creepy. So I think that's why Steven Spielberg went with it in a ghost horror film
@@fkdarula It's not. Spielberg used it because it was part of the national culture, instantly recognizable to our generation. Many stations had "sermonette" from some local pastor, then signoff announcement with facts about the station (legally required) and then either National Anthem or the Lord's Prayer. What might be scary is when they turn off the broadcast signal ... static (FSHHHH) or test pattern (sinewave). I used to watch the static because sometimes an adjacent channel was just barely visible. Spielberg would have known about this and decided what if it's not just an adjacent channel, what if it's something spooky.
@@ksol1460tv Oddly test patterns make me feel safe wheras I find static not creepy but a threat. I go cold inside and out and I feel a cold vibe off the static. LIKE ICE. I would back away from the TV out of range

I have heard of "Chill out' but this is INSANE I go ICE COLD seeing these things YET..I feel safe seeing a test pattern and the tone doesnt even bother me 400hz more so then 1000hz. Both affect my moods in different ways. 1000hz a strong sense of love and 400hz I feel self aware hearing it

I Remember it well as a child. There were no Infomercials back then and it was Expensive to have Air time. It would usually sign off at about 2 in the morning.
Wow this was a famous tv sign off SSB that was used in Steven Spielberg 1982 film poltergeist! This was also used In the Famous CBS Affiliates In Famous Big USA Cities! Like WCBS In New York City New York And WBBM In Chicago Illinois! (Both Are TV Channel 2 You Know!) Back in the Late 1970s and Early 1980s. And I Like The Views Of Washington DC In this Poltergeist SSB Alot Very Much!
Yeh, only the instremental version makes me thing of this moive and wait for the static signoff lol.brilliant on the writers to do that. Yeh i remember those 2 am sign off days.
Maybe they should do this to all internet and WI-Fi devices every night at 12 midnight so we can all get a good night sleep like back in the 60 and 70’s lol !
back in the day the national anthem showed a travelogue of the USA(The Alamo, Golden Gate Bridge, Liberty Bell, Williamsburg, Indepencece Hall, The USS Constitution, Mt. Rushmore, Washington D.C. and ending with The Statue Of Liberty.

Nobody signs off anymore, so the National Anthem at sign off is now been long forgotten. This is a sign that there are not as many true Americans anymore.
Carol Annie must be the most tolerant 5 year old to put up with that GOD AWFUL SOUND the static makes. And the sound wasn't muted either if one can hear the Star Spangled banner. This crap makes Colour bars and a sine wave tone look SEXY
