Can I just add: The tape has a backing on it and can be easily rolled out and cut down the middle with a knife. That would be the safer way ;) Be safe and be happy. Thanks for watching!
I thought when you cut the tape with the saw and had your fingers there if it binded on the tape it could of thrown your hand into the blades You don't want to go threw life with one hand. A zip cut on a grinder would be safer than the saw! Peace and love!
Now I just want to guess what you’re going to post in future but I guess I can wait for the video(s). Intriguing. Ashley’s face, you look so excited as Doug tells us what’s coming up. I can’t see anything wrong with playing with tools, I’m a teaching assistant who used to run a gardening club and work in reception class, we always use adult tools for kids in our school and supervise them, no problems. The best thing you can do is be first aid trained to deal with any problems. I’ll be amazed if I ever meet a child without a bruise from walking let alone taking further risks. Life happens by learning. Also children’s toys and tools are expensive and poor quality and usually end up in the rubbish dumps. Kids want to be like their parents and use the real deal, it’s fun! X
Wow! You guys rock! I really love your barn. The windows looks really good! I am so impressed with your work habits. I'll be waiting for the bombshell news!
Doug/ Ashley congratulations on your move to the country. I was a city slicker until July 2015 when I moved to the country. Your plans sounds almost identical to mine, except we want goats. Currently I am clearing some of the tress for my fence. It seems like I never can get ahead because there is something always that needs to be done. I applaud your idea on the windows. Please keep up the great work.
Barn looks amazing!Windows look great what a good idea. Can't wait to see what is next! You guys are such great people and neighbors.please don't stop making these home improvement video's us faithful viewers will go into withdrawal!Lol!
Your place is looking soooo cool. It is fun to check in to see what’s on the project list. The windows look lovely. Clean and safe. It is so nice to see a plan to build and then get stock. Good order! 🐓
Nice job, those will be great windows. You can also still see through them well enough. You guys have taken what many would have considered an eyesore and scrapped and turned it into a beautiful and soon fully functional building! Maverick was sure enjoying digging up of artifacts! He's been watching someone detect! You guys keep up the good work, and stay safe. I really enjoy your videos, and can't believe just the other day you hit 10K and now already you're at 11K! Wow
Whoa the windows turned out great! We had to use plexi glass for our sky light. A tree came down on our house. Went right thru the first layer of the sky light. I love and hate these trees. We had one fall on the house....some damage, but the home owners covered it. I can't wait to find out what the news is!!!!!! I'm sitting on pins on needles. Love your story. LOL UGH!!
Safety tip time. When scraping/chiseling out glazing, wear safety eye wear, preferably ones that seal against your face and forehead as compound chips or embedded broken glass can fly into your eyes. It can fly around normal safety glasses and into eyes. It was nice to see Ashley have ear muffs on at least. Your barn is looking really great. You 2 do very good work. Doug, you once said that this type of work "is not our first rodeo", and it shows. You know what you are doing and are versatile with the tools. I was wondering if your fingers were going to meet the blade when cutting the tape roll. But you know, I think most tool users, including myself, have at times here and there have taken chances and put ourselves at risk. Its ALWAYS nice to see the kids in your vids, and my wife now stops what she is doing to come watch your video with me, as she did with this one.. Another fan.....yaaayyyy. Protect your eyes and ears. You only have 2 of each.
I normally wear safety glasses for these types of jobs but this time I just didn't. It wasn't as bad as it looks though, the lighting may have made it look worse than it may have been. We try to be safe but sometimes...you know. Cutting the tape was a bit of a cringe moment for sure.
I’ve been trying to find a material like this for about a year now. Everyone always suggested to me “try glass or plexiglass” uhhh which is way too expensive for what I want to do. I looked it up and only saw roofing ones at Home Depot. But Lowe’s carries it and other similar options for very cheap! Thank you!!!
I am so impressed I had to pause the video to concentrate on the windows. Keep up with the extra video at the end after you verbally sign off - always look forward to this.
Cut many things on the crosscut saw. Tell you the truth I had to close my eyes when you cut the roll of foil tape. That old broke down barn is looking very good. Most of the time getting the work done is more importan then filming I know you two work very hard making your place your home.
Nice. It acts like frosted glass and spreads the light around. You might have noticed the white, plastic versions of twin wall around - as temporary bill-boards.
As someone who worked in home renovations when i was younger, watching this video made me uncomfortable. Using with a box cutter without wearing a leather glove on your free hand is unnecessarily risky, and cutting the roll of tape with a miter saw could have resulted in a serious, permanent injury. Most injures happen late in the day when people are tired and in a rush to finish, so they don't stop for a minute and think. When working with dangerous tools, or putting yourself in any risky situation like doing repairs from the top of a tall ladder, the question you should ask each time is "what is the worst that could happen" and always err on the side of caution, safety first. These are only small risks, but year after year the odds will catch up to you.
It only takes a second .. I have had enough close calls to now be very careful.. Cutting that tape made me cringe.. But we did not see the actual cutting of it..
This poly could work for inside window inserts to seal drafty interior windows. I have seen vids of people making wood frames and using hick shrink wrap, but using this poly you apparently can skip the wood and just tape the edges to make a smooth surface to stick the weather stripping foam around and you are done. Only thing is you don't have the visibility if shrink wrap, but if you don't mind that, then it will work.
You two are so lovely!! Thanks for the video. Please take safety more seriously especially because you are not on your own and your entire family depends on you to properly function. Im glad i found your channel :)
Good stuff! Possible solution is to use Rubber Edging Trim Strip Rubber Strip Trim 11mmx5mm Durable High Quality Rubber. But you’d have to account for space around perimeter and clamping pressure to make the seal would be required. Lots of sources on U-Channel Weather seals in various sizes. I plan to try this out but to also add a bead of silicone down the open ends of the corrugated slots to prevent and seepage.
Great job. That was a perfect solution. I do have two suggestions. 1. use a dust mask, you don't know if it has been painted with lead paint. 2. With all the glass found in the barn, wear shoes.
I used those sheets of polycarbonate in the winter here in Oregon during the rainy season. I place panels on the outside of the chicken run. Great job, good decision to use the polycarbonate!
The barn looks so awesome, great job :) Eek a tick. I hate ticks. Maybe you’ll have to get a few guinea hens to help take care of those little buggers. I loved Belle’s thing she made with the foam :) Thanks for sharing. We have a new addition to our Homestead. I’ll send you some pictures of it soon. See ya.
Doug and Ashley, a Sensible job, Well Done! Ashley, I had to giggle a little when at the Twelve minute mark you said "And now we won't have that wind blasting through there." Doug turned and looked at the windows and as he turned back around it appeared that he had an "Uh Oh" look for a second or two, as if he suddenly had a little cartoon vision of the windows being bowed backwards from the gale force winds. Hope I made you laugh, cause your vids always give me something to smile about. See -----> : )
GLAD FOR YOU BOTH ON THAT PRODUCT THAT U'VE FOUND & MADE IT WORK FOR YOUR NEEDZ & THE COST AZ WELL . VERY VERY KOOL TO SHARE WITH UR SUBSCRIBERZ TOO...
Cutting tape with a chop saw is extremely risky. Glad you are still safe. Tape has sticky gummy surfaces and this could have caught on the blade and dragged your hand into the blade in a fraction of a second. You should have used a 24" long piece of wood inside the tape roll to hold it against the saw fence with a clamp. A finer tooth blade would have also provided a cleaner cut. But the best would have been getting the industrial grade double sticky rubber foam tape about 1" wide to seal the edges as well provide a weather water seal on the window frame. Otherwise corrugated or fluted clear polypropolene or polyethelene is great stuff for quick shed windows.
I'm excited to see what's coming next..maybe a new addition to the homestead?? I wish so much I could provide my family this type of lifestyle...maybe someday if is in God's plan I will. O love watching your channel thanks for sharing
I like what you do. A piece of 2X4 through the roll of tape would have kept our fingers further away from the blade. I have taken a few chances like that. Window glaze is available in a calking gun tube as an FYI. Stay safe.
Rolling the tape out on the 2x4 and cutting it down the middle with a knife would be the even better way ;) I may use silicone to seal the windows but I'll check the store and see what options I have. Thanks :)
*slaps on wrist* Doug you weren’t wearing safety glasses!!! I do love that the two of you show your kids that all it takes is hard work and determination to get things done, but I was watching thinking of how many things could go wrong when something ends up in your eye! (My background is in nursing) I know you’ve heard it before so I didn’t want to say it but this time I was worried 😝
Please contact your home owners insurance & have them come out & take pictures. So you are insured for replacement on your barn once you are finished. Also all your property improvements..
I look forward to your videos. I learned so much from you . How did u get so smart lol I wished y'all would put shoes on the baby Iam so afraid of him hurting his self
If you have a bunch of those windows to do your best bet is to soften the beding compound with a blowtorch. Then it'll come right out with a putty scraper. We had 150 windows to do an ours...
Your getting goats to mow your fields? Lol. Doug that made me cringe you cutting that tape like that. I’ve watched my hubby do thing that have made me cringe too! Fortunately he’s not lost any digits! He has used a table saw that’s over a 100 years old. It was his dads. We got a dewalt one back in 2012 that’s more portable. But I’m glad you didn’t lose a finger or two! Love your vids...have an awesome day. Windows look good! Nice to see something get completed! 👍👍👍👍👍💐 awesome job!
Hi Guys, Doug your looking tired hope you are ok, give yourself a break and have some family time and recharge your batteries. We have a saying in the UK Rome wasnt built in a day.your health and family come first. take care Shayne & Kaz
Hello OITC FAMILY.. Doug please wear safety goggles at all times. Ashley had her glasses on So she had some protection. I really care about Y'all. Safety First Always.. (I make my Hubby wear his Safety Goggles).
Great video, it's been some years now since you did this. How did they work out? I heard polycarbonate gets a yellowish tint to it after a while. Did you notice that at all. I think uv resistant polycarbonate would prevent that
I think the polycarbonate can yellow over time, but these panels have a UV coating on them which helps. I think pvc panels are more prone to yellowing. We no longer live there so I can't say for sure how they are doing.
AND, IN THE WHAT COULD GO WRONG HERE? DEPARTMENT... I gotta' be honest with ya'... You're living RIGHT on the edge... You had ME on the edge of my seat! SO MANY SAFETY CONCERNS... I thought I was going to see some fingers stuck to the tape... (I'm pretty sure it's worth the couple bucks extra to buy the 3/4 or 1 inch & KEEP THE FINGERS!)... Or an eye injury or SOMETHING... (No safety glasses) Toddlers playing with screwdrivers & under ladders (with tools on the top)... & THE TICK! (I ALMOST screamed like a little schoolgirl! (No, no, I did! I admit it.) LOL I doubt you'll be receiving any type of safety awards or endorsements for this video. LOL But hey, what doesn't kill us... Right? It'll toughen ya' all up! What's the saying? If you're gonna' be dumb, You gotta' be tough! Excellent motto for this video... ALL RIBBING ASIDE, THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO. I HOPE YOUR NEW WINDOWS ARE HOLDING UP WELL... YOU HAVE A BEAUTIFUL FAMILY. TAKE CARE OF THEM! SHORTCUTS MAME & KILL! TC&GB!
Been Subbing for a while, but I have to call you on this Video, so many things wrong with this. 1) please where safety glasses when chipping things like glazing. 2) never cut tape like that again, it would be nice to have fingers on that left hand, round items tend to roll when a circular blade contacts them. I saw another comment about putting a board through the center and I think this would be good. 3) Child Barefoot in the barn, there is lots of unknown in old barns. I know I will be called Sally for this comment, but I want you to continue your adventure and making these videos and I want you to and yours to avoid injury, Take Care
