Polyglot Grammar Learn Romance Language Past Tense

I've made this video to address the differences of the use of the past because its use varies greatly amongst the Romance languages and is worth analysing.
For French and Italian: The compound tenses are used in all levels of speech. "Formal" would not be the best word to describe their "simple past" forms.

I know Romanian and I'm learning Spanish. For me it was a breeze until I got to the tenses. This is an invaluable resource because you just explained why tenses are expressed so differently. Thanks!

I'm from Argentina. Just like in Galicia Spain, at least in my region, we prefer to use the simple past even when it'd be more appropriate to use the present perfect. I really like to use the present perfect correctly in Spanish that's why I personally tend to use it more often. However, I still prefer to use the simple past unconsciously. When I'm writing, especially formally, I use both tenses more appropriately.

I really liked how you explained the question of the "ter (to have) + past participle" in Portuguese/Galician, as opposed to other romance languages, as well and the "tengo muy vista esta película" question in Spanish. :) I already knew them, but it's really rare to actually find someone who knows, and makes an approach on this matter which, if unnoticed, may well lead to a lack of linguistic culture. I am from Cuba, and I always asked myself what is the function of " tengo" un the phrase " tengo vista esta película" because the official grammar in Spanish should be "He visto esta película" can you explain it. I heard once, " de este libro tengo leídos dos capítulos", but if you have read all of the chapters it doesn't look quite right to say "tengo leídos todos los capítulos" sino "de este libro ya he leído todos los capítulos" so I don't think it is talking about a grammar tense but an influence of of Portuguese since they conjugate with "ter" or " tener" un Spanish, but Spanish uses "haber" but in Cuba is more common to say "de este libro llevo leídos dos capítulos" using "llevar".

@@alabado-sea-jehova7945 galician influence. They use tener and llevar a lot. Alse they use "no dar" in the meaning of "not to be able"... Things of galicians... "Tener hecho, llevar hecho and dar hecho" are the weird constructions... They are directly translated of Galician language.

@@alabado-sea-jehova7945 eso es porque si te fijas en las conjugaciones dice "formas compuestas más comunes", ya que son utilizados más verbos auxiliares, como tener, incluso en el norte de México todavía usan "ser" y "estar" como auxiliares, al igual que en italiano. italiano: Sono andato/a español: -Soy venido/a -tengo venido. -he venido.

In Colombia we use both present perfect and simple past just like in english. We also use present perfect progressive and all that stuff depending on the idea we want to convey.

Would you say that the usage of the present perfect and the simple past in Colombian Spanish is closer to American or British English? I know from experience that most dialects of European Spanish, other than in the north, show a high preference for the present perfect, in line with British English. I was under the impression that most dialects in Latin America use the simple past in a lot of places where European speakers would use the present perfect, as in American English, but I don't have much experience with speakers from various parts of Latin America. I'd figure that the use of the two tenses would vary across Latin America

8:26 Doesn't Spanish have the same near-future construction with its "a" before "comer?" So, shouldn't it be grouped with Italian?

Spanish does have this future construction, but it's akin to a tense in that it can be used with any verb to say what you will do. In Italian and Catalan it doesn't work like this. It has more of a connotation that you're physically moving your location to perform the action. So it wouldn't be grouped with Italian. Also, it's not always near-future.

Oh bad ... It's really difficult too meet a native speaker of occitan ... Here in France, there's any recognition of regional languages ... I live in Savoy region since 10 years, and I've met a speker of savoyard only 2 times :/ ...
