Video #621: Today is a general tour. But if there’s interest, I can do future videos on the individual zones. Let me know where to start... More Info: www.beadsandbeading.com/blog/?... Polymer Clay Tutor.
Topics Covered In This Video:
* Today I'm going to give you a tour of my Studio and talk a little bit about organizing your craft space into zones.
* It doesn't really matter whether you have a tiny little workspace, like your Kitchen table... or you have a super giant one, like a whole separate building.
* If you have a lot of craft supplies, you need to organize them in a way that you can get access to them, and also be able to put them away properly when you're done.
* Otherwise you run into problems like buying the same product over and over because you didn't realize that you already had it.
* So, I wanted to show you how I organize my studio.
* A lot of you have been requesting a studio tour... and I did show you when it was crazy messy a while back.
* But I have done some clean up and organizing since then.
* Still not perfect yet, but it is good enough to show you how it is all set up.
* I have my space allocated into the following zones...
* Workspace - where I have all the supplies, clay, tools and findings within arms reach for making polymer clay jewelry.
* Paints - all (or most) of my paints, finishes and liquid clays are stored on a shelf above my workspace.
* Publishing - Laptop for writing posts, web research and communicating with students.
* Office Cabinet - Cabinet with manuals, paper and other supplies needed for the office.
* Inks and stamps - alcohol inks, stamp pads, spray inks, stencils and rubber stamps stored in drawers and trays, in one area.
* Craft Bins - miscellaneous craft supplies stored in a wall of plastic drawers. Each drawer has a different supply, such a small ribbon bits in one drawer and feathers in another.
* Office Supplies - Drawers with pencils, pens, rulers, scissors, glue sticks, etc., in one skinny tower of drawers.
* CD Player and CD's next to it.
* Baking Area - Top of metal cabinet has my convection oven and all the baking supplies such as oven thermometer, baking trays, bead racks, tins of cornstarch, etc.
* Rock Tumbling Area - Rock Tumbler and containers of sanding substrate stored together. There is an electrical plug close by so the tumbler can run, right where it is stored.
* Metal Card Cabinet - Metal drawers are filled with overflow clay, tools, color recipe chips and other supplies. I would love to paint this cabinet a bright color and reorganize the drawers some more.
* Dressform - Vintage dress form of my Grandma Edna's, is a great place to store my lab coat for the PcT Test Lab videos. I didn't mention it but it is also a great place to test out necklace lengths and to see how the piece will drape on the body.
* New Products for Demo Bins - In this rolling drawer unit I keep all the new products that I plan to create demo videos for, as well as the product test samples for the test lab videos.
* Book Case - Stores all my books, magazines and a variety of nic knacks, including my vintage treadle sewing machine that was my Grandma Hanna's.
* Cord and Chain Storage - A slot wall units with hooks and rods store all my cording, beading wire, beading thread, needles and similar items.
* Peg Board - A painted wood peg board on the back of my door, stores miscellaneous supplies that are better off seen, than forgotten.
* Storage Cupboards - Two tall storage cupboards store items that are used in the studio but don't need to be seen such as cans of acetone, solvents, buttons, paper, Scrapbooking supplies, die cutting machine and dies, etc.
* The write ups for my last 5 studio zones (Scrapbooking Shelves, Center Island, Sewing Station, Polishing Station, Metal Working) were tool long to include in this space, but you can to my blog (link below) for the full descriptions.

Hi again Cindy! You asked for suggestions so I thought I would throw this out there. I also use the large plastic storage carts. I really have not found anything else that beats their price, or function. I really don't know how I would keep the clutter down without them. However, visually they appear cluttered to me which zaps my creative process. My solution was to use white foam board that I bought from the dollar store.Cut them into panels, and insert them into the inside drawer fronts. This holds up really well without any other enforcement. The drawers have just enough indentation for the panels to slide into place and stand on their own. I LOVE the white space! So clean looking. You can leave the panels white, label them, cover them with the hordes of paper most of us have, paint them, or now that I've been watching your videos ...I'm thinking I might create some fancy tiles to decorate and label mine! THANK YOU for your tutorials! You are amazing with them!

Nice studio tour Cindy. I help artists organize their studios .you have the right idea for sure. To many creative type want pretty boxes and containers to put things in. The problem. With that is you never see what you have. Then the disease hits buying things over and over.

Great video. We can never be too organized or learn too much!! You do have tons of stuff. That's always a challenge to categorize! its one thing to shove things in drawers but organizing is sorting the mind! Kudos to the videographer (yay Doug!) No motion sickness throughout the entire 360+!! Yes, Cindy, we did see the socks 😘 Thanks much for the video. Lauri.

Very nice! I know I have shared my studio with you a while ago, but like everything in the craft world, it is consistantly changing. Being in the basement, my hubby got me a nice fireplace heater! Now, more reorganizing! And more comfort on cold winter days. After more than a foot of snow and 9 degrees F it will be a welcomed change!

Perfect timing for me to watch today! We are remodeling and I will have a new 'studio' area. Although I tend to organize anyway, this was good food for thought as I set up my new area. And, as a side note, I have had many different work areas, from a small desktop to a whole room, and I find I like it better when everything is within reach (or at least a short ride on my office chair) so I do not have to get up and hunt for what I need. Thanks again Cindy!

I am impressed, it's not a large space, but u have organized it so it works well and is a functioning space. I would love to have a craft room, but right now we r living in a small basement apartment with our 2 kids and I just get to put my stuff wherever I can and store what I make in boxes till we have our own house. One day I hope to have a functioning craft room that's organized like urs cuz I have to search 4 things constantly! It will be nice when I can just have things handy everywhere. Thanks 4 the video

Very nice room! I love the towers! I have been working on mine but it has been hard for me! I can't afford all the storage so I have to make my own. In a way it can be nice but then it takes a lot of time! I used old shipping boxes to make storage in my closet to have everything organized since I could not afford to buy the shelving to do it. It took some time but it saved me money! Now if I can just get the rest of my room finished I would be happy!

Great video, Cindy! I, too, have my studio zoned. I can honestly say that , "I'm all zoned out.'" LOL My stuff...errr....important supplies climb the walls through the use of shelving and plastic shoe boxes, peg board, several of the plastic 'towers', both the large and I really like the small 5"x7" or so ones. I've been organizing like mad, and I still have a way to go. I've gutted the two small closets, removed the drawers and put in shelves to put the larger and more awkward 'machinery' and in the other, I put my beads. Yes, I have that many beads. You try being with a 'rock dealer' who sold beads by the strand for over ten years and not have a little of this and a little of that 'shrinkage' ;-) in your stash. I like to use a couple of tv trays adapted to hold my elbow lights by drilling holes in their tops. LIGHT IS AN ESSENTIAL for me. I also have one set up for my pasta machine and basic blades, etc. I can take this where ever I need. I do have a question, though. You referenced your tumbling 'substrates'. I'm curious about what you use. I would like to tumble my polymer clay beads and have looked around for the proper procedures. I've found one that uses plastic tubs as an insert to the rubber tub and different polishing...word word...stuff you put in for the different 'grits' you go through to get to the shiniest finish. What do you use? Oh, gee....idea for tutorial clip?

I bought several of the CD storage binders to storage my conditioned clay. Each book has 200 compartments. I tried dozens of ways to organize my conditioned clay and this was the one that ultimately worked for me. I don't have a room designated for crafts so I can't spread out, sadly! But I have a beautiful tall bookcase filled to the brim which also helps keep my craft supply addiction contained to what will fit. Of course I've managed to expand that a bit by things like hooks to the side. I try to keep it looking pretty since it's in the corner of a room by using acrylic shoe boxes I decorated & standing cloth bags with clear vinyl fronts I made. My sewing area is in my bedroom and I came across an old Singer treadle sewing table I mounted my sewing machine in flanked by a barristers bookcase that holds my fabric stash all wrapped around decorated pieces of cardboard. Threads and the like are stored in decorative clear glass jars and have their place atop the barristers bookcase. How I wish I had a full room to spread out in and not have to worry what it looks when company walks in the door. My craft table is a bookcase with a fold down table that's never big enough! But I make do. I've found when the weather is good crafting outside is such a joy. A beautiful day and polymer clay is the most amazing boost to the creative juices. I may be planning to work in a certain color theme but a butterfly or hummingbird.. or even a new flower opening often changes that in a hurry when I'm crafting outside. Even project seem to take on a life of their own influenced by the changing colors around me. Now if these been around way to long cold temperatures would just go away and let spring start in earnest! I love your videos and have learned so much from you. Thank you for sharing your talents and time.

Thank you so much for sharing your studio with the rest of us. I'm at a point in my life where I have some major decisions to make including what portion will I dedicate to my crafting (polymer clay, gourds, miniatures) and how seriously I'm going to pursue it. My craft room is so tiny, with so much "stuff" in it, it's time for me to go through and get rid of things and that's so difficult for me! You really are an inspiration for me. Your space, while full, is also neat and easy to work in. I wish I could just ask you over for coffee and talk to you. If you're ever in Kentucky, I sure wish you'd let me know!

[" I love you and your studio" she whispers in total envy.] My name is Sue, not Reinaldo - the boyfriend may be surprised I used his account, since it was open, to post this. Hee hee, shh! I have been a creative/artist since childhood - weren't we all back then? As a teen I had half of a finished basement for a studio and lots of money to finance supplies and whims. Now I'm a gramma (nearly an adult), my studio, in a state of wrecked, is just 10'x10' or so, and supplies are painstakingly chosen by immediate need. As a teen I was sure I'd always be an artist earning a living by art. Then I had a family - followed by what others call 'real jobs'. Now I am a volunteer at my local Veterans' Hospital, where I am a art therapist. Best job ever in my life. This job leads me into trying things I have either never done or haven't done since my teens (a decade or two ago, lol). I love it! This ramble DOES lead to a question for you: Since I am just now getting into polymer clay seriously, What are the 'Top 10' tools you would suggest to get the (polymer)ball rolling? Let's pretend, or just admit, I have none at the moment. Thank you so very much for your channel, though this is the first video I have watched ... I love your presentation style and find your explanations simple to follow. Kudos to you, and Doug! Sincerely, Sue

I will share something unusual... When my daughters were young they had a bunk bed (sturdy metal). I have hung on to it ever since. I now use it as a storage device... I've put the sets of drawers on the bottom bunk with open racks with bins in the back. The top bunk has less-used items and then there's always the under-the-bed storage for much less-used items... Its not as great as having everything visible like Cindy has it. But it certainly is a lifesaver for all that extra stuff I can stowed away.
@rachellederanger1012

+Windkisssed Great ideas for the bunk beds! I was curious to know if you have them away from the wall to use the other side, or if u out have deep spaces with the beds against the wall? I hope to have organized space before long, but right now I have avalanches waiting to happen, of hoarded supplies. ...lol :'(
@Windkisssed
@Windkisssed 8 лет назад
+Rachelle Deranger Unfortunately I only have space for the bed against the wall. But as I was typing the above comment I was visualising what it would be like with 3-sided access.... Nice concept. I'm imagining all the drawer units I could fit in there!!! Megaspace!! Haha. Oh, I still have my potential avalanches also... We simply can't stop acquiring materials could we!? What kind of creatives would we be if we quit experimenting?!

I have stations also. I tend to re-do it all periodically and that's where I am now, so my little studio is a horrific mess. I'm a polymer clay rookie, a self taught book binder, quilter and use a small embroidery machine, paint with acrylics (and oils at times), use various machines (Cinch it and such) and next could be anything! When my girls move out on their own (very soon now), I will expand.

Nicole just put a small piece of clay in a drawer and check back in a week or two. If the clay is sticky, rut roh! But I've only found 1 container that wasn't compatible so chances are yours will be fine. And maybe you could use some stlicone sheeting to line the drawers if they aren't compatible.
@nicolenewman5679
@nicolenewman5679 9 лет назад
Thank you. That is a great idea. I have some in a zip lock bag right now to see if that will work. It's been one week and so far so good. I hadn't even thought about lining the drawers. I will try that. Hugs
@galady8632
@galady8632 9 лет назад
In lieu of silicone you can line the bins with wax paper. But I doubt you will have issues with most plastic drawers. As suggested it is wise you are testing them first..
@nicolenewman5679
@nicolenewman5679 9 лет назад
I recently learned that plastic containers have a number on them usually on the bottom. If the number is 5 it is safe for polymer clay if it is 6 then it will break the polymer clay down. I have also discovered that glad zip lock storage bags are safe. I wrap my clay in the glad bags and then put them in my storage container. This keeps the clay free of dust and it keeps it from drying out. I use Premo and it seems to stay soft 98% of the time but a couple of the darker colors have actually dried out. So the glad bags give me piece of mind.

Hi Cindy, thank you for the tour. I have all the things you have and then some. After doing this for over 20 years you accumulate a few things, as I'm sure you can understand. I generally have at least two of everything (in case one breaks). There are some items and tools they just don't make anymore. Do you have items like that? I have found over the years that I will buy one of an item that I love, then they stop making it so now I make sure I buy at least two of the items I love, do you do that? I am very organized but just don't have much room for everything, and the filming equipment. Have you had this issue? If so what did you do? I have those same three drawer, plastic, staking storage units but I have found that you can't put anything very heavy in them because they collapse, especially with the wheels on them. Is this why you took the wheels off yours and stacked them? I had to have wheels on one of mine so I built a rolling platform out of wood and steel caster wheels to set it on. I'd love to know if you have any storage ideas or ways to keep organized. Once again, thanks for the great video, take care, Dee

Love your organizing! Per other queries, the storage bins I have are made by Akro-mils, and have a great rep and a good price considering how much clutter it can confine. (Akro-Mils 64 Drawer Plastic Parts Storage Hardware & Craft ) Check out their website. They come in various sizes, and can be bought through their retail outlets, including Amazon and Grainger. There are similar items made by other companies available at discount "tool stores," , but I've found them to be cheaply made, and a real hassle when it comes to weighty objects like clay. Akro is much sturdier. No, I don't work for Akro, but I've still got their bins I bought 20 years ago.

I don't have a video of that cabinet nor can I do one in the future, because I have already changed to a different studio (and will be changing to yet another one, when we move). So I can't really help you there. One of my favorite Scrapbook RU-vidrs @JenniferMcGuireInk has some wonderful paper storage videos that should be quite helpful for your friend if you want to send her there. Thanks for stopping by!

Hi! I love your videos. I am wondering where you got your 'wall of drawers' that you store a lot of the clay and other things in? I have been searching for something similar but am worried about buying the wrong kind since I've read many warnings about keeping clay away from certain plastics as you are storing it. Do you have recommendations? Thanks so much.

Looks like Cindy and I have the same bins, made by Akro-mils, and have a great rep and a good price considering how much clutter it can confine. (One of mine is Akro-Mils 64 Drawer Plastic Parts Storage Hardware & Craft ) Check out their website.

Hi Cindy, great tour of a great space. My work area is my spare room which is also a guest room and my office (in the closet!) so everything is in cupboards. But I did get some useful tips from this video. I'm curious about one thing.. What do you use the tumbler for and how often do you use it? I've been thinking of getting one for my metal clay but was unaware it could be used for polymer too! Thanks for the tour. ☺

Patt Word I'm always in socks in the house (or slippers when it cold). In Canada most people take their shoes off in the house. Most of the kid's Asian friends even leave their shoes outside on the porch if it is protected. I have noticed that in the States most people left left their shoes on. Every culture does things a little different. As far as the necklace goes, that was made from an old tutorial called the Parrot Tulip Bead tutorial. Here is the link if you haven't got that one yet: www.beadvideos.com/back-issues-02/vol-038/

Dear Cindy. I'm very interested to buy storage like the black set up you have above your desk to hold your individual clay's inside. Is this a specific brand?. Or name for this type of storage please?. Many thanks x

I posted on your website but it was on an older thread,not certain which you would read first. If you are still interested in some of the discontinued Premo! colors you might want to check www.polymerclayexpress.com. They had photos of 2 two ounce and one 1 pound clays in the older packaging.

Hi, Cindy, Was just wondering if you have ever done a video on lettering polymer clay jewelry? I have lots of requests from my clients to make customized pieces with names and birthstones. I have tried some projects, but they just don’t look professional enough for me to sell. My problem is 1: getting it to look like metal and 2: getting the name dark enough after impressing the letter without making it look smudged:::: help! Thanks, June Harris
