Pomeranian vs German Spitz - Differences and Similarities - Breed Comparison 

Do you own a German Spitz or Pomeranian? What do you like the most about it?

I bought Pomeranian but as it gets older, her image is more like German Spitz. She is only 4 month old now but weight over 5lb already. I am happy with my puppy, but people should know that some shops are using Pomeranian title to collect more money when they were little and don’t trust paper saying Pomeranian parents. Just wait until 3+ month, and you can see the difference and should save money.

My family used to have a pom/ shih tzu cross that was larger than either breed. He was about 20 inches tall. I suspect now he might have been a german spitz/ shih tzu cross and the shelter just said pomeranian because its more common. Amazing dog he was my best friend growing up.

I'm looking at a rescue dog, he's a black German spitz with a touch of schipperke or pom, or perhaps both in him. I know very little about the breed so this was very useful, thank you.

Is it possible to just have an oversized Pomeranian? Mine hit the bigger size of the spitz, but look at his face and his tail. He just looks more pommie.

I have a “Pomeranian” that was a surrender at puppy stage. He’s grown to look much more like a German Spitz not a Pom. He is 7.5kg (lean), about 30cm high, wedge shaped head and longer snout. Jet black. Looks like a fox. Finally, it is not possible to tire him out. 2 swims at the beach and 3 walks in a day is about right. He is NO lap dog that’s for sure. Not what I expected but I’m so glad.

No. These dogs are the same. German Spitz is a category that includes: Wolfsspitz/ Kershond, Großspitz, Mittelspitz, Kleinspitz and Zwergspitz/ Pomeranian.

This is a very odd "history" given of the Poms. It is very incomplete. Pomeraians came originally from a location that was between Germany and Poland. They were basically nothing more than German Spitz with a specific breeding program or rather bred for a particular look and size. Queen Victoria of England favoured these dogs that were in size akin to the Mittel German Spitz. At one point in time, Queen Victoria was given a gift of a couple of dogs that she called "Toy Pomeranians" as they looked like Poms that were much smaller. These were not Poms but rather, a breed from Italy called the Volpino Italiano or Italian Spitz. They were sturdy little dogs that inspired the breeding down of the Pomeranians. In fact, chances are that Volpinos were bred with smaller Poms and German Spitz dogs to help promote the smaller breed and in turn, this also created more variants in fur pattern/colour. The story of the mixing of Spitz dogs should include the story of the American Eskimo dog that comes in 3 sizes. All of these are basically German Spitz with a likelihood of both Volpino and Pom mixed into the miniature and toy Eskimos. Last - for tthose who have owned Poms, know that the muzzle is not just one shape but rather breeding programs have produced three popular shapes including one similar to the German Spitz and in line with the Volpino in having a fox-like face while others are more pugged and others, teddybear. Last - even today, with all the breeding specs for Poms, some offspring come out much larger or with faces that are more of the fox face than the parent dogs. These are "throwbacks" that have expressed physical facets of the more ancient Poms and Spitz dogs. It is not that uncommon and some Poms can be quite large as in say, 17lbs (7.7 kilograms). Btw, German Spitz does include their version of the Pom - Zwerg Spitz (Dwarf Spitz).
