Subscribe to watch Mike finish this engine build and re-install it into his 1969 Pontiac GTO Restomod, in his home garage! "How to install AN Fittings, and keep your heads cool", is Part 17 of this Pontiac 400/455 rebuild, but can be applied to all motor types. This trick allows more water flow through the drivers side head, helping to keep your Pontiac engine cool! Army/Navy fittings were originally designed for aircraft, back in the day. Now you too can improve your car plumbing with the tips and tricks shown in this video. Have fun!

I installed those cheap screw clamps on hoses daily for 15 years and never had a leak. AN looks nice but entirely un-necessary. There are three things you can do to upgrade if you wish, one is to use shielded clamps that don't cut into the rubber hoses . The second thing is to use silicone hoses with the shielded clamps. The third is to use a metal tee not a plastic one. No more is necessary. But I have to admit he does nice work and if you like AN he is a great teacher.

Great mod if you have pipe threads in heads. This system doesn't work on stock heads without cutting threads in the water ports. Stock heads have tolerance fit nipples with no 90deg. Any fittings will interfere with the Distributor.
@FastMonty
@FastMonty Год назад
Thanks... stock heads are actually better because the press in heater hose nipples have flow restrictor in them. (The drivers side head you just have to remove the galley plug) Then find a molded 5/8" heater hose that helps with the bend from each head... and T it off. The ultimate solution is to run those lines to the front cross over. I kinda did that in my latest video on this subject... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-v_qUY4E33r0.html Have fun!

Monty, thanks for the tip about drawing coolant for the heater core from both heads. I've added that to my mental list of Pontiac engine build tips and tricks. I love the look of the AN fittings. One thing that occurred to me that I might have done differently (assuming there were no space constraints, which there easily might have been in your case) is that I would have tried to make the bridge line symmetric to the point where it goes down to one line, so that flow is not favored from one head over the other. I feel like you're still going to get more coolant coming from the RH head, BUT it's still miles better than no line from the LH head at all. Great channel - your GTO is a beaut. I just acquired a '74 Formula, and no doubt the info on your channel is going to be a big help, especially the Tremec TKO conversion stuff.
@FastMonty
@FastMonty 4 года назад
Griff, thanks for the kind words... and congrats on your project, can't wait to see it. To your point, yes, it would be ideal to have equal length hoses, like how headers work. BUT, I have a major constraint in that my water line goes immediately through the fire wall, into the heater core. That being said, I'm still getting good flow from the Driver's side head. I'd estimate I'm only losing 5 % flow. as compared to the Passenger Side. Keep in mind, the water is being Pushed equally through each head. So, we don't need to over complicate it. :) Glad you're enjoying the TREMEC build... I am too! Love the challenge. See ya!

Awesome videos! I might have missed something... I have 69 Firebird w/ 76 Trans AM 455HO motor (likely mostly stock) installed. Edelbrock EFI System installed. Now... I added a water nipple on the driver's head, machined a manifold for nice hose routing. Test drive and my temps are up higher than before. From my reading, it looks like water that goes through the heater core, wether it be stock from passenger head or modified from both heads, returns to the front of the engine rather than through the radiator thus circulating hoter water (we're currently in the 100's degree weather here). My guess is not running the heater on hot days I should close off any heater core feeds (future electric valve) so that all water circulates through my radiater? Sounds like the engineers after 1960 didn't make the best design change in water flow? I'm sure I missed something... I've done EVERYTHING for cooling now at this point. Adding the driver's head to the heater after watching your video was the last 'bonus' attempt in hoping for cooler temps. Sorry for the long explanation here on the related post as I couldn't find a different contact method unless I joined twitter? Thanks much and Nice car!
@FastMonty
@FastMonty 3 года назад
Thanks Joe... I understand your concern. In theory, yes, too much hot water could be recirculated. I was debating putting a ball valve in that heater hose to control that flow, as an experiment, because I did see the stock nipples have restrictor coils in them. Maybe try that? Second to that, what's reading your temperature? (I now have three gauges... stock, FiTech output, and a new Autometer Mechanical gauge. The Fitech unit reads 15 degrees high, the stock unit reads 20 degrees low, and the Mechanical gauge is just right. ha, ha... Lastly, do you have the stock pulley's on the engine? Sometimes the pump can pump too fast, not giving the coolant enough time to cool off in the radiator. Food for thought... thanks for the comment!

I am wanting to do the same set up as you have in this video. I do not quite understand what "the standard nipple with restrictor" means. It appears that your AN fittings are directly mounted into your heads. Did you have your heads tapped? I have not installed my heads yet so it would not be an issue for me to get that done. I do appreciate your series and don't want this to leak either.

I am seeing AN to NPT fitting or AN to an O-ring style AN920-10-08A but I am not sure if that is what you are using. Are the Pontiac holes where the freeze plug goes threaded? I do not have a heater so I am going to Y to the front of the manifold. Can I use one of the predrilled holes on either side of the thermostat or do I have to drill and weld the fitting in the exact spot that you did yours?

Good question Scott... The freeze plugs in stock heads are NOT threaded. I would use the standard nipple with restrictor, then run standard hose to a Y connector, then yes... utilize one of those tapped holes in the crossover. (I assume your timing cover heater hose inlet is already plugged?)

The most difficult part is just finding the right molded 5/8" hose... I just searched different looking hoses on Summit Racing, and cut one up. Obviously added a T. Did your engine malfunction from timing. Or roller litters?

Hold on ! 165 degrees is not proper operating Temp ! So why do you think this is great , 180 at least for the engine to perform well i would say !!! Right
@FastMonty

Agreed, 180 is now perfect for my set up. 165 came from Jim Butler's recommendation for a carbureted car. Thanks.

Thing I like about the setup is with this we can instal a regulator type vlv in this simple re-plumb to help make engine get to the target temps in a controlled fashion. Wherein our current setup on Pontiac & AMC we don't have a very good method to do this, so when it gets too hot, I'm a prisoner to that design. Removing heated water before the Intake gets it, is the better thing which can be done for air density ratio in the intake. Plus uniform temperatures on all four corners of the engine. My 400 Pontiac always struggled with the excess temps over 200 off and on during various conditions with its OEM design. This which Monte has come up with, is a very intelligent design to help us out in several ways. I work in High Tech industry as an Eng / mechanic, this thing he has created is what I would say classifies as a "White paper".

Hi, what exact heater hose fittings you use on those heads?
@FastMonty
@FastMonty 2 года назад
They're 3/4 NPT, which are only used on after market heads that have the tapped holes. Otherwise, you'll need to get the stock 5/8" hose nipple
