Nice video. Thanks. Could you explain exactly how you achieve the longer follow through, even while hitting softer? You can't mean that you artificially force follow through after the ball is long gone. You must mean you do something different BEFORE hitting the CB so the follow through happens automatically? Or you change your stroke somehow (e.g. elbow drop) -- but that would lead to inconsistency. Or perhaps from extra wrist action follow through or even releasing the cue stick (a type of slip stroke). Please explain more.

As my percussionist instructor once said, "If you can't play it slow, you certainly won't be able to play it fast". This principle also applies to this game, and it's how I teach anyone that I work with. Great video Sharivari!!!

For a long time I hated playing on fast tables. Really hated it - so I played on much slower tables. Then I started to go to a different pool hall that had super fast tables. One of the top professionals from the Philippines plays there. I soon realized that once you get used to really fast tables it is better for your game. Why? Because of exactly what was talked about in this video! To move the ball around the table on a FAST table takes very little effort. You can hit the ball so much easier and still go three and four rails with ease. This makes shot making so much easier and more consistent because you do not have to hit the ball hard to move the cue ball around. The reason most players, good players, hit the ball hard is not to make the shot but to get position. And when you play on a fast table it is sooo easy to hit the ball easy and get the cue ball around the table. I used to watch in amazement as professional players would make moving the cue ball around look so easy and it frustrated me that I could not do that nearly as easy as they did. Well, the reason was that I was playing slow tables. Really slow tables. So, if you are on slow tables now - try to find a legitimately fast table and see what a huge difference it makes. The game is so much easier on a fast table.
@danelobe2524
@danelobe2524 4 года назад
Ultimately your problem is not table speed but cue ball accuracy. I can play just as well on mud tables as fast heated cloth, because my cue accuracy is spot on. It's much easier to hit the spot on the cue ball at slower speeds. Here's a good test. Get a red circle cue ball clean all the blue chalk spots. off. Rack up some balls to break. Place your cue ball on the table in your break position but spin in the red circle into position that your going to cue it into the rack. Chalk up and break, aiming at the red circle on the cue ball. After your break pick up the cue ball and see where the blue chalk mark is compaired to the red circle you were aiming to strike. You will notice you missed the circle. Do the drill over and over starting with your slowest break speed and increasing until your accuracy disapears. This tells you two things. #1 what speed your break becomes inaccurate. #2 a visual of how pathetic your break accuracy is. Use this drill to improve your cue speed accuracy. # 2 reason your break is bad and you missing shots at a faster pace. "Cue ball accuracy" #1 is always fundamental reasons.
@jamesdavis8731
@jamesdavis8731 4 года назад
@@danelobe2524 you sorta completely missed my point! LOL. My point is that on a fast table it is easier to move the cue ball around the table. And that is a FACT. I could do some many demonstrations of this and Sharivari also showed this in the video. I play on slow and fast tables and I am accurate making the shots on any speed of table, but the issue I mentioned is that with faster tables it is easier to move the ball around the table. It is a proven FACT that players lose accuracy when hitting the ball really hard. The break is not the issue. On the break you do not need to be quite as accurate when hitting hard. Why do you not see top players hit their normal shots with the speed they have on a break? Because they do not have to hit them as hard to accurately make the shot. Again, in case YOU do not get it. The point is that accuracy is improved with a cleaner smoother stroke and it is easier to do that and make the shot PLUS move the ball around the table.
@724riff

I cannot play well on fast tables .... I just cannot slow the tempo of my stroke . Nor control the skid of the cue ball enough idk maybe because of decelerating and not trying to over hit a ball . I'm constantly going past my lines and on tight fast slippery tables it makes getting back in line more difficult.
@danelobe2524
@danelobe2524 4 года назад
@@724riff - shorten your stroke. Find center ball.
@jamesdavis8731
@jamesdavis8731 4 года назад
@@724riff it's like everything else - you just have to work on it. When I first got back on playing really fast tables I lost a LOT of games to inferior players because I was constantly over running my position spots. Drove me crazy and I swore fast tables were like the Devil. But then one day I was watching a very good Filipina play. She is a world champion and her stroke was smooth and effortless and I watched as she put the ball about anywhere she wanted with ease. Even on shots that required three rails and getting position on the other end of the table. I then just committed to playing fast tables and getting used to them. Yes, it does require adjusting your stroke. There is no reason to decelerate through the cue ball if you are not starting the forward motion too fast to begin with. Anyway, if you are a serious player and going to be playing other good serious players in tournaments then you are probably going to be playing on fast tables. Once you get really used to them the game is easier.

After watching this last night I spend 5 hours today working on my stroke speed, timing and follow thru and the result was amazing!!! I used the first shot in this video as a gauge and after sever hours of refining my stroke I was able to hit the shot perfect at least 7 out of 10. I then went back to your other drills and shots and the difference was amazing. Thank you so much. It is easier to move the cue ball with less power when the table cloth and rails are in good condition. Sometimes at the club table the rails are hard and the cloth is worn out, so players need to power their stroke to run the cue ball full table. Nice video btw and congrats for new studio.

Thanks! I was actually going to suggest doing a video where the effect of English is often different than someone new to English might expect. Sort of like when drawing with English where the spin does the reverse of follow shots or stun shots when they hit the rail. I was having weird effects when trying shots like you showed, and now realize I was hitting too hard, and not enough follow through. Thanks so much! Can’t wait to try it out at the pool club tomorrow.

Epic demonstration! Scientific explanations: more spin effect = more angular impulse applied to the cue ball = F * r * Δt . Ideally, the max effect is achieved when maximizing F (the hitting power), r (the length from the center of the cue ball to the hitting point) and Δt (the duration of time the tip keeps contacting the cue ball. A.k.a good follow-through). What Sharivari said, essentially, is that since most of us can't optimizing all three factors at the same time, first focusing on aiming high/low enough and maintaining a good stroke.

This video was great and it really got me thinking about why using less power on some/perhaps most - shots is correct. First of all you already mentioned a couple of reasons. Less power up to a point at least means more precision with where we hit the cue ball as well as more precision with the line of the shot. Another reason has to do with the force of the cue ball into a rail. The harder the cue ball is hit the more it compresses into the rail thereby narrowing its angle off said rail. This effect is seen when banking a ball l as well. The harder the hit the narrower the angle coming off of the rail. One player in particular who seems to be in a league of his own in this area of the game is SVB. The action he extracts from the cue ball with seemingly impossible slow speed is astonishing. Thanks for this video Sharivari. Side note: The level of play you exhibit is outstanding. Even during my best years I wouldn't have played you for money.

When I'm stroking smoothly with good follow through is when I'm playing my best pool. But for some reason I have a really hard time with keeping consistent with that and before I know it my stroke turns to this jerky motion and I'm hitting way too hard. I'm constantly having to remind myself to switch back to smooth with follow through. If I could just always have that consistent smooth stroke my game would elevate so much higher.

Yes, the weight of the stick matters. It is just basic physics. If you are using a 15oz cue and use your normal stroke speed the call is not going to go as fast as the same stroke using a 19oz cue. It is like a hammer being swung at 20 mph and then a heavier hammer being swung at the same speed. The heavier object, at the same speed is going to cause more force.
