This scene proves that even though the elderly have grown old in appearance, inside they are still children with dreams, but people don't see that anymore. Patch saw that and spoke to the inner child of this woman, which is why she was so happy.
I once brought a bucket of fresh hay to one of my patients who had been a farmer much of his life. I had him close his eyes as I opened the bucket and had him take a deep breath through his nose. The amazed reaction and recognition of the familiar smell (he had dementia) was ABSOLUTLY PRICELESS!! I encouraged him to reach in and grab some. he brought it to his face and breathed deep. I coaxed him to remember good times on the farm, riding his John Deere, haying etc. He was so happy.
I'm 40 and am still 16 in my mind. I just don't have time to waste thinking about it. I have a pretty adult "handle things" attitude but at heart I'm still just a kid.
Aw man. This is why Robin Williams was perfect for this role. I feel like he did for millions what he did for this old woman. Changing lives and improving the quality of life. Plus the look of absolute joy on his and everyone's face is absolutely tear-jerking. Especially Hoffman's. I love that line of his earlier before this scene to Patch: "You have a gift. You have a way with people. You know, they like you. And if you leave, I can't learn this way". RIP to the both of them.
What I have learned about the elderly in aged care. They feel sad when they feel that their dreams can't be achieved due to their situation and its great when people come together and make it happen. Its a wonderful remedy for them. When I get old, if I have to go into aged care, I want to be able to still follow my interests.
Healing isn’t just about curing a sickness. It’s about giving people hope, understanding and above all, a little bit of happiness along the way. Rest in peace Mr Willliams. 💐
For the confused among you (and rightfully so), the patient was a playful woman who had "swim in a pool of noodles" on her bucket list. Patch thought that was awesome and proceeded to make her dream come true.
"You treat an illness, it's 50/50. But if you treat a person, I guarantee you, you'll win every time." RIP to the legendary Robin Williams. I wish we could have treated you like you treated us. :( And RIP to the legendary Philip Seymour Hoffman. Truly a double blow to the heart in the year of 2014. I also lost two grandparents that year just 3 days apart.
Ellen Albertini Dow who plays Mrs Kennedy outlived two of her fellow co-stars, Robin Williams and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, who tragically died too early.
This has got to be the best emotional movie ever. I laugh and I cry and I laugh some more when I watch this movie. It pains me to know that Robin Williams was going through depression when he filmed this movie. It must have been a huge struggle to even go to work some days but he did it for the ones who would get great enjoyment from this film. . . RIP Robin you are missed everyday.
The relief that went over his face when he heard the question. Not only did he have help with a patient that was driving him bonkers. He knew a friend was back and the place would be better for it
My “pool of noodles” sort of speak would be to get inside a real wrestling ring and run back and fourth off the ropes. I’ve always want to do that ever since I was a kid.
That’s an awesome dream! I hope one day you get to do it. Maybe even have a crowd cheering you on! My “Pool of Noodles” is to go for walk through a massive swarm of butterflies.
@@Musingsofawitch No I wouldn’t want a crowd there because I’d be too embarrassed. Anyway there’s a place in Branson Missouri called The Butterfly Palace and Rainforest adventure. They have 100s of butterflies in there that will lite on you. It’s a neat place.
Really wonderful scene. For me, I wish I could swim in a pool of melted chocolate and eat it all up. If Robin Williams was still alive, I'd ask him to grant my wish too.
In the context of this movie this is touching and all, but out of context this is completely insane. It feels like if someone took a screwy late night adult swim concept that was supposed to be played off for laughs and somehow adapted it into a full budget Hollywood movie and made it weirdly emotional. I kind of love it either way to be honest hahaha.
@@l.a.3479 oh believe me when your hands on in the kitchen cooking them well you know it,s a good well done meal and according to legend making your own pasta noodles is very easy too according to the Italian culture that is,
Despite his personal flaws Robin Williams was such a blessing to everyone who had humor in their hearts and in their souls, the world lost such a great and humbled man who brought so much joy and laughter to it, RIP Mr Williams, we will never forget you 😢
after watching this patch adams movie, many lessons have been learned. I am a nurse, and I see palliativecare care is still not evenly distributed, especially in Indonesia, hopefully in the future Indonesia will be even better, very inspiring me. I Watched this film from 2009 and was recommended by my friend a pastor. Thank you The part that i like, when giving joy to children with cancer and a grandmother bathes in bak noodle with patch adams. That's a very good action ^_^ God Bless
And people say Robin Williams doesn't have a superpower. We can clearly see his ability was how he touched peoples hearts with joy, kindness, and yes of course comedy. (My joke) Where are de A-meatballs? Rip Robin 😟 we'll miss you.
It didn't really kick in for a week or two that he had passed. He was my all time favorite actor/comedian. Bar none. Absolutely broke my heart when I heard. And when i see his last role in Night at the museum, i get ugly crying,
It is sad that society forces us to throw away what seems to be childish, but it is that very thing that makes you want to get up daily be curious and feel like your life was not wasted on sitting and waiting.

I feel like since he died movies have lost a sense of tenderness that we need right now. We have people talking about manly traits, whatever happened to compassion, tenderness, and caring, those are the ones that tend to inflict the most pain sometimes because of futility of life. Whatever happened to that?
As amazingly touching as this beautiful moment is, something logisttical doesn't add up. Why would Mrs. Kennedy react to the sight of that pool full of pasta only after Patch shouted "Surprise"? She wasn't blindfolded, and would've seen that pool as she was being wheeled towards it.
She old. She probably only is surprised when someone actually shouts SURPRISE. Thats how old people are. That's how people will be when we reach a certain age.
"And the headline of your 10 o clock News: an elderly lady drowns in a poolll...of noodles. A crazy stunt from a Doctor goes wrong. More on that, right after this..."
Some kids calculated that there are 6.5 billion noodles in that pool... I feel like that can't be right, because at 576 noodles per pound, and I dunno, a dollar a pound (I guess it just shot up to a buck sixty, but this is an older movie so it should be less, whatever) that would cost over 11 million dollars.. that's.. almost definitely not right. and I read somewhere else that even filling an olympic-sized pool with spaghett would only cost like 10 grand, so it's probably less. _but it's probably more than anyone could or should pay just for a dying woman's amusement_
@@yesterdayitrained a movie based on real life. but that's not the point. The movie itself is real. Like it actually got made. And I'm trying to do calculations to run budget here, and I cannot possibly be right.
@@KairuHakubi That wasn’t my point either. I don’t care if the movie was based on “real life”. I was trying to say, in a kinder fashion, that you are obsessed with a movie. It’s not that deep.
@@KairuHakubi And now you’re a psychologist! Impressive. But you couldn’t be further from the truth. Have a great life, projecting your projections on others.
