Been watching your videos for at least 3 years. Remember when you recommended PopOS. I said to myself "if this guy recommends, i will try". Took 1 afternoon to find replacement for my old windows apps. Installed it, and since then (2 years and running) I am the happiest laptop user in the planet. NEVER had 1 single issue. There is no way back to Windows.

Yeah, once you use auto tiling in Pop!_OS it’s really hard to go back. That in combination with the default keybindings makes it an absolute ergonomic dream. Video is great as always. I appreciate the time you take to put these out. Thanks Jay, wishing you the best!
@tomv3999

My only criticism of auto tiling is it makes perfect sense on a large display. I don't find it useful on my laptop. But it's fine, and I appreciate that it is easy to turn on and off.

Well done for showing the popOS properly installed and not through a VM (like many other youtubers do, choosing the easy way). That way we can see the real behavior of the OS with real hardware.

POP OS has been my daily driver for a couple of years now. It is the only linux distro I have not distro hoped from. It has worked flawlessly on an old HP desktop I had lying around. upgrading to the latest 22.04 as I type this. I've tried many distros and over the last 8 years since I first got into linux, and POP just works, and love the look and feel.

Great video. I like when the review contains the most important parts from the change log. I have been running Pop!_OS for almost 2 years now coming from the Windows world and I am still surprised over the performance, speed and features that Linux distros offer and with Pop!_OS anyone can get a good start to learning about Linux in an easy way. Just to give a short comparison; I work in as sysadmin and i recently upgraded a very powerful and 1 year old laptop from Windows 10 21H1 to 21H2, which took about 40 min. I also recently upgrade my Pop!_OS to 22.04 on my 4 year old office laptop and it took about 12 min.

the only thing I don't like about Pop!_OS is that GRUB isn't installed during the installation process, so if wish to dual-boot, you need to do it manually later. other than that, it seems like a good distro, it surely is an improvement over vanilla Ubuntu.

I am a big fan of your channel - keep up the great work! I have just tried Pop OS on a new laptop that already has ubuntu 22 and mint 21. Most installs give an option to install "alongside" existing os's - but not Pop OS. I was afraid I borked my previous installs but managed to recover my grub loader by installing mint again. All is good now and Pop OS looks to become my new fav OS! Installing multiple OS's is confusing for noobs like me so you might consider a segment focused on that. Anyway - best wishes for a fabulous New Year!

2:30 - openSUSE setup also doesn't let you set the name of the computer either, and when you open a terminal, you get [username]@localhost. You can change it in YaST, but I thought the same thing - all other distros include this when setting up the computer, why not this one? Greate video as always, BTW!

Took me a little while to warm to your videos TBH. I'm a little high twitch so "cut to the chase" mentality was fogging my brain to start with. No fault of yours. Having had Ubuntu upgrade cross my sights I'm now suffering from FOMO and have found your vids REALLY helpful in reigning that impulse in and considering what/why I should upgrade or whether this is actually something I need to do. I've been using Ubuntu for years and it's helpful to see/consider options every now and then. I'm still undecided about Ubuntu upgrade/switch to another distro (Pop!?) but am thankful for your considered advice and thoughts on this matter. Really appreciate your taking the time to walk your viewers through this process. Thank you!

I've been using PopOS for quite some time now, maybe 3 years. The lasts versions of PopOS has worse quality than before. I've noticed everything has something to do with remote folders (davs, nextcloud, samba, etc) has very poor integration with GUI and working with files there is dangerous. I had important losts of information working with popOS and remote folders and i can no longer recommend it. I dont know if its an issue with ubunto more than with popOS anyway. But remote folders work worse than before and i am heavily dissapointed.

A lot of purists rail against Pop! OS. Yes, it's commercial. So's Ubuntu. But Pop! gets SO much right. I have three laptops I use for various purposes... One for travel, an 11-inch touchscreen Dell (gen 8 i3) and it runs Pop!. I have a Dell gen 8 i7 that is running Zorin, my SECOND favorite distro that I've tried -- it's my primary computer for everyday use. And I have an experimenter -- an ASUS gen 4 i3 running Solus Budgie. These three distros are my three favorites. Note, I've tried about 10 distros (including Ubuntu, Manjaro, UbuntuDDE, Mint Cinnamon, Elementary OS, Nitrux, Chrome OS and probably others I can't recall). I find these Pop!, Zorin and Solus Budgie to be my three favorites. I like working in the GUI and these three platforms (in the order listed) are the ones I like best. Great review!

The current Cosmic DE is Gnome with extensions. You can turn them off and start with vanilla Gnome which is what I do because I prefer the extensions I use to the Pop extensions. You can also make Vanilla Gnome in Fedora look just like PopOS Cosmic. Other than Deb vs RPM, I'm having a hard time identifying the difference between my install of Fedora and my install of PopOS and can't think of a good reason to like or pick one over the other.

I have been using linux off and on for years sometimes as secondary machines and sometimes as primary machines. I know that PopOS is getting a lot of flack from some people within the community, but it does something that most other distros don't- comes pre built with Nvidia drivers. Now, I have dealt with Nvidia drivers on several "do it yourself" distros before I ever tried (or heard of) PopOS. As a gamer, I use Nvidia because it is my favorite in terms of performance. But I have always hated the hassle that getting drivers can be. I know that is Nvidia's fault, but pop makes it smooth. My current setup is a PopOS distro with KDE desktop and is highly customized. Minus the fact that neofetch will say it is PopOS, you wouldn't know it. It runs like a dream for the most part, but it is not my personal favorite distro, but it does the things for my use case better than any other distro does. I will continue to use other distros on virtual machines and secondary computers, but for now my feet are planted on the PopOS side of the field.

almost everything is polished and better in pop os 22.04 compared to 20.04. My beef with 22.04 is that I don't understand why the developers decided to separate the Launcher(super) and workspaces (super + /) into two commands. The previous version consolidated it into one super key. Now let's say you're in workspace view, and want to launch Firefox, you would have to exit workspaces, then start the launcher and then launch firefox

Upgrading on my workstation was a fiasco. I could not even run a terminal. I finally managed to get things working using the "refresh" option (exceedingly annoying that the "Rescue" boot runs in 800x600). The only way I will run this upgrade on my laptop is if I clone the entire SSD so I can go back. I did not enjoy this upgrade experience at all.

@tomv3999
@tomv3999 2 года назад
@@myhandlehasbeenmishandled I ran the upgrade. I feel like doing a completely fresh install is something that should not be required with Linux. Windows, sure. But Linux? No. The only way I will consider going through this again on my laptop is if I dd clone the SSD so I can revert. This was a deeply disappointing upgrade. The binary 'which' vanished, the recovery partition runs in 800x600. sound stopped working (could not even pick a sound card device in the UI). sudo apt commands failed. I couldn't even run a terminal (had to use virtual terminals). Nordvpn died (their support helped fix that). The whole process was very unpleasant. Admittedly this is old hardware (HP Z1) but I expected better.

The best thing about Linux systems for any user of Windows or Mac is that Linux is open source and free. Which means. *THE BACKGROUND IMAGES ARE FREE!* They're stylish and beautiful. And being open and free means you can freely get them off the web in high definition without problems. Love the Jellyfish of Ubuntu, Pop OS has an atmospheric starry sky. But my download goes to Lubuntu's hummingbird. Not only does it have a starry sky above with space clouds but also gradual color towards the bottom and the hummingbird is a soft ranbow color with a gradient aura around it. It's the not blocky stylized theme most goes for but rather a detailed actually drawn image but still simple enough to take it all in. I can review Linux backgrounds for a long time.

Ques: When you get an 'Firmware Update Notification' is there a way to check what Firmware is being referred to before installing? My concern is that I don't run Windows & don't want windows Bios Secure Boot updates installed. As for POP_OS I'm loving the tiling & keyboard short cut learning experience. I get you prefer Pop. I think it´s great too. But your comment about Ubuntu's implementation of GNOME being a train wrack is completely misleading and simply not true. Ubuntu works very closely with upstream development and the only thing they chose to exclude are the GTK4 Gnome apps (for good reason). BTW I don´t see these in Pop either?! There are tons of great improvements to the stock GNOME experience with Jammy managed to land. Among these: triple frame buffering, dash-to-dock integration and accent colours.

This seems to run a bit kinder on resources than Kubuntu 22.04, which wasn't bad to begin with. Usually I can do a walk-over install leaving the files intact, but custom partition setup wouldn't tolerate it. Finally I backed up my files and browser cache, and Pop 22.04 worked after formatting the SSD. Honestly I'm on the fence about Cosmic. Though I can run any of the popular environments, KDE seems to have it more-together on power management. Right now sound volume and Internet don't recover after Suspend. Maybe I'll get those issues solved in the next few days. If not, KDE is in the repository.

Take LinuxMint, for instance, in this regarding and you will see what I am talking about. You never notes that Mint is based on Ubuntu Focal, 'till you go and check it by yourself. People which look to 22.04 LTS gona say "Oh! Another Ubuntu flavor???" I bet.

I started with Linux Mint and have been using it for years learning Linux. But I’m thinking of switching to Pop OS. Anything specific that makes this better than Mint?

I've been using Pop!_OS since I got back into Linux. I had used Ubuntu, but lost interest in it when Canonical got weird. Pop OS is dinged for being "backwards"" compared to, say Linux Mint, but the reality is Pop OS is more up to date. For example, my install of Pop OS 22.04 is on kernel 6.6.10 while Linux Mint 21.2 on my Thinkpad Gen 5 is still on 5.15.0, and will not even run on my new Thinkpad Gen 11.

I agree with you. I was a dual booter since early 2000's even I was still in the Philippines. Now, I'm in Thailand, and due to this pandemic and the windows 11 update that destroyed my files cause I can't open it anymore. I switch my main laptop to pop OS. I like the color theme plus the smoothness of the interface. I'm sticking to Pop OS instead of Ubuntu. I'm not saying that I don't like Ubuntu. But it is much better than Ubuntu as you said. Keep it up. And let's add more contents and let our viewers learn about Linux. 💻🔌

22.04 is not polished version as it used to be. It doesn’t work smoothly for me out of the box. I have couple external drives attached to my router. It detects the drives but it can’t connect. I didn’t have any problems like this before. Another issue is the mouse is frozen when I connect my laptop to external monitor. This is such a bad release so people shouldn’t update if your current settings up works.

If a distribution doesn't work on your hardware in particular, that doesn't make it a bad release. Every machine I've run 22.04 on (over 5 at this point) haven't had any issues at all. So it's important not to blame an entire distro for your experience. Instead, it would be better to lookup hardware compatibility information regarding your hardware and see if there are known issues, and file bugs to let the developers know.

Similar issues with multiple monitors here! Are you using the Nvidia version? I do and I believe that definitely something is broken with this 22.04. My daily driver is UbuntuMate but I decided to give it a try to this new Pop's release. Since I was too lazy I just downloaded the Nvidia version and I installed OBS from the Pop Store and as soon as started OBS crashed... ok... No big deal, then I connected an external monitor (HDMI) and mouse frozen but my keyboard was still alive so I poweroff from terminal. I started again, and tried but this time I connected by miniDP since my laptop has both ports but mouse frozen again. I don't have any of those issues with the same laptop (i7-7700, GTX 1080, 32 GB RAM) under Ubuntu Mate 22.04, Parrot OS 5 and Fedora 36 and the funny thing with Pop Os 20.04 also is working fine. Rock solid all of those.

Because I use some GNOME extensions, I didn't feel the urge to upgrade at all. Some of my favorite extensions will not work on a new Pop OS 22.04. Most of the GNOME extensions that I use support GNOME 32 which is more than 3 years ago. My favorite GNOME extensions support GNOME 38. So, with GNOME 42 with some improvements,... No, Thank you.

I've had pop OS on an old laptop for 1-2 years just to test it. Then about 2 months ago, installed it on my new main laptop replacing w11, and it's been awesome so far. Only lost 10% fps on the only game I play (not supported officially) using Steam proton. Suspend doesn't really work with hybrid graphics but I can live with that till I find a fix. But everything else, brightness control, wifi, just works out of the box or just needs to update to work. Nvidia gpu works without fuss! Can even use DLSS! I also was confused at these new features they mentioned in the change log cuz I had them on the 21.10 version, but I understand now why that is.

Yeah the hostname thing annoys me with Fedora Workstation installer also, it is why I use the Everything ISO so I can manually set it during install.

Stable fragmentation is nice, but still it is fragmentation. I will not be switching off windows myself until one of these trillion OSes create a RDP server solution that is in the same galaxy as Microsoft's remote desktop, which is cream of the crop IMO

I've been using zorin os and so far happy with it. I've heard a lots of good reviews about pop. I've seen its color scheme, its very pleasant and I love it. Is it a good idea to switch from zorin os to pop os ?

I think you should check out Pop!_OS in deme (live) mode, where it runs off the usb stick. It'll run slower than it would if installed, but it'll give you a general idea of what it's like. That way if you end up not liking it, just reboot back to Zorin.

The problem I have with Pop OS is that it wont install on my old workstation laptop with an old Quadro fx2800m I downloaded the Nvidia version of Pop OS but it just get stuck with a black screen with a cursor blinking in the top left corner. I heard something about the drivers for this old card have been removed from different repositories. It's an older driver from 300 series. Kind of sad that I can't run the latest versions of Linux on this fully functional computer. So much e-waste these days.

I wonder how it compares with other Ubuntu distros. I use Ubuntu Mate specifically, but had the same annoyances with Firefox and Snap. I thought I configured it properly, but Firefox still manage to auto update behind my back, ruining my session. Worst, perhaps due to my workarounds, Firefox auto updated to an older version (from 106 to 105). So my bookmarks, extensions and browsing history were not transferred. If Firefox acts up disrespectfully again, this would be good bye Ubuntu.

Nice distro but this time the upgrade to 22.04 created problems. Try sudo apt install ttf-mscorefonts-installer.

Really really want to install Pop!_OS on my brand new Win 11 PC as dual boot. Unfortunately, Pop!_OS still can't do secure boot. Way too many hassles to turn secure boot on for Win11, and off for Pop!_OS each time.
