I enjoy how relaxing classical music is. I remember taking a few tests in school and the teachers would put pop or classical and when they put pop, it was distracting but with classical, you feel more into the test and not as stressed while taking it. So classical music has my vote. 🙂

Yeah.........pop music is, for the best part, instantly likable, but it has limited tools to its arsenal. Classical music can portray far more than pop music ever could, but it can take more effort to appreciate........hence pop music is popular......ppl dont want to take the time and effort to appreciate their music, they want instant gratification.

In all fairness, I don’t hate pop music, and I listen to my fair share of it. It’s just that classical music is more thought out and more original, and I much prefer it to the stuff I hear on the radio.

It may be that most people only know about "best of" compilations, but that's because people just don't go out and listen to the classical music that exists as much. Popular music is more accessible, because it's all around us, on the radio and on tv, whereas to hear classical music, one has to actively seek it out. Everyone has good and bad music, even today's pop stars. No one can write perfectly amazing music all the time, but when they do, we end up with masterpieces like Gustac Holst's 'Jupiter' and Pachelbel's 'Canon in D'. Also, if we're going to talk about being repetitive or plagiarizing, I'd also like to point out that the chord progression used in Pachelbel's Canon has been used in many, many pop songs in the last century.

I would argue that the reason the vast majority of classical music was lost is because they didn't have good methods of preserving it. Recording it wasn't possible, and so most of it was only ever written on paper, and paper decays over time, especially when not well preserved. It wasn't necessarily because the music was mediocre or bad, but more because copying and printing music was more difficult, and even if there were a thousand copies of a piece, it could be lost because paper is difficult to preserve. It truly is a tragedy that so much music was lost, but it wasn't an intentional choice. It may be that there's mediocre and great music from back then and from now, but while back then we burned women and called them witches, now we live in a time when people fight to legalize same sex marriage and we face gun violence in schools. No era is perfect, not in music, nor in politics. Each has its ups and downs, but classical music, because it's not currently being written, because it's not new, and because it is difficult to preserve, has been pushed to the sidelines and lost. I would argue that that is why it is difficult to compare them, because the majority of classical music has been lost with time, whereas pop is constantly surrounding us, and there is no risk of being lost because of modern technology.

If Chopin's orchestral arrangements were bad, then why did anyone go through the process of carefully archiving and copying them? It sounds like his music was preserved more on the basis of who he was than because it was good music. I'm not saying Chopin is bad, but once these top composers had the spotlight, pretty much everything they did was probably saved. Meanwhile, that mediocre count you talked about may not necessarily have been mediocre. It's possible they weren't very good, but it's also possible they just didn't get lucky with being popular, or they fell out of favor with the church, who held the majority of power at the time, and so their music was intentionally not preserved. I don't think comparing old music to new music is a "dumb thing to do". Bad or good, they're entirely different styles of music. Classical tended to be slower and more focused on the instruments, whereas pop is more upbeat, and sometimes doesn't involve actual instruments at all. The real thing to compare is which one is better to listen to, as discussed in the video. It can't be denied that classical music has health benefits, such as being calming and relaxing. Also, for musicians, learning classical music is better because of its focus on the instrumental parts, which are difficult and complex. Also, since you brought it up, the majority of pop artists do use songs from the same few producers, as opposed to writing their own music. Which means, the music we listen to on the radio... just isn't very original. Whereas Beethoven's work, good and bad, was his own, no one can blame popstars like Katy Perry for good or bad music because they're just singing the songs that have been given to them by a behind the scenes song writer. Not that i don't like Katy Perry, but the pop music industry is rather deceptive in that you assume these pop stars got to be where they were due to their own merit in musical composition, as opposed to the fact that they had a decent voice that could be edited to sound amazing. Most of the time, they're really only figureheads for an industry aiming to make money.

Hey you two! I think this discussion is getting too heated so ima end this rn. All pop music is awful because it is designed to appeal to the vast small brained musical audience that is America. Better, more complex genres like rock, metal, classical and jazz are not as popular as pop and rap because they are to complex to be completely comprehended and enjoyed by small brained people. Popularity does not matter. Most pop artists don’t write their own songs, and all of them do it for the money. Conclusion: pop is the second worst genre of music. Worst is rap because there is no melody and the majority of it is vulgar and mindless.

Adhi S You should try running listening to Shostakovich's Gadfly Suite!! My orchestra teacher in high school said she liked going on walks (she was a bit older haha) listening to it, especially the 12th movement. Also the 3rd movement (not sure if I have the right movement, but it's the one with the party) might be really exciting to work out too!

Sofia The Singer with classical music, every famous composer has at least one song that everyone on the face of the planet has heard. From beethoven we can have für Elise, Chopin we’ve got nocturne opus 9 no 2, liszt has Hungarian rhapsody no 2, from Paganini we’ve got caprice 24, Mozart gave eine klein natchtmusik, Tchaikovsky gave his first piano concerto, from Bach we have prelude in c, From debussy we’ve got Clair de lune, and the list goes on and on and on. It transcends beyond languages and cultures etc. It’s a lot more powerful than pop music nowadays (in general), and has stood the test of time for centuries.

Let me add a few things to classical. Techniques, polyrhythms, composers such as lizst, prodigies breaking self esteem, teacher recommending super hard pieces, people asking you to play easy songs rather than the hard piece you’ve worked on for months, polishing the piece.

I personally like older pop from the 60's to late 80's mainly because I feel like there was more originality / emotion then and most people didn't pay others to write their songs for them, but I do agree that a society doses tend to not want to like something because it is popular. But that's just my own opinion so don't take this as a rant or a threat or something crazy like that

Idk about that, all classical fans I know found are classical musicians with genuine passion.

I have gone through a lot of comments and I have found that the superior complex comes from the pop side I dont know if it is about strenght in numbers or if it is people reaching out of the bubble of people to try to make themselfes grow by trying to be an individual and I have also seen a lot of people on both sides chosing one or the other and not bradening their horisonts to other tastes.

The only difference is the language. Kpop used to sound kinda 'different' in the times when songs like "RingDingDong" or "Mr. Simple" were made... But these songs were kinda trashy and bad objectively... even tho they are kpop classics and I love them. But nowadays kpop is very, very similar to western pop, mostly the performance aspects are different.
