Fun fact. Popeye is the prototype for all Superheros. He's the FIRST comic strip character with super powers, he battles a reoccurring antagonist, and regularly rescues his girl friend.

I once saw Popeye punch a bolt of lightning during a storm. The rest of the lightning was too scared to go near him after that. This man takes cartoon physics to superhero levels, and I think it's safe to say Chuck Norris has nothing on him.

Now for the comic sequel where Popeye teams up with Duke Nukem to hunt down the Tandy Computer Wiz Kids.....or maybe that was a fever dream that was the result of eating bad spinach, I can't remember.

This does look like a fun as all hell comic that stays true to Popeye in general. In fact, I'd argue that the use of language like "oriental" & the like was done to stay accurate to the time when Popeye originally debuted. It doesn't really excuse the use of said language in more modern times (even the 80s), but it at least explains it. You could argue that using that language in what looks like a modern-day setting is a bit of an anachronism (or would that be reverse anachronism, since it's using outdated ideas in modern times?), but oh well, I guess.

(This actually makes me want to watch the 1980 Robin Williams/Shelley Duvall 'Popeye' movie again.)

On the art aspect, I thought it seemed to resemble anime or manga in a more cartoony fashion- especially in the eyes. Now I just want to see a Popeye anime! That would be awesome!

I'd love to see this style used for a proper Popeye cartoon. It's a good mix of classic Popeye with a Dick Tracy-esque grit to it (The mild realism with surreal proportions on certain characters). I think it would really work in the modern era...though let's be frank, we Popeye fans would take almost ANY proper media for our favorite sailor man at this point.

I'm thinking Whatasnozzle might actually be an Astro Boy reference. Given he's a scientist who builds robots, and Dr. Ochanamizu was originally called "Dr. Elefun," back in the 60's when the first Astro Boy series came to the U.S.

I absolutely love this Comic! Its awesome and especially the Art Style, trying to be realistic but somewhat keeping the style of Popeye, its wonderful!

Been a Popeye fan since before I could walk and those cartoons and animated shorts were a big part of my childhood. If I had that comic, it would be my most prized part of my collection which is rather small. Thanks for reviewing this amazing looking comic book and look forward to your next episode.

Yeah in the cartoon at least Pappy was from the start a dead beat. I mean he was around and helped but his first cartoon was basically explaining that he didn't give a crap until Popeye really needed him and there was no one else around

From my time as a popeye fan I can say that it fleshes out some of his known backstory and hits the main points (Him being in the navy and boxing) but for the most part its all new stuff. And as a fun fact Pappy, in fact, didn't like spinach and many episodes and comics had Popeye forcing Pappy to eat spinach as the main plot point.

This was a great review, and surprisingly short. I actually do like the art style that's used, reminds me of the Popeye cartoons from the 50s or 60s that I would watch on VHS and DVD. Even like how Popeye has red hair as opposed to just bald. I would like to know who it was that complained about the art being realistic. This is about as cartoony as you can get.

Hopefully I am not going on a rant here but I just thought some things need to be said. Firstly, Linkara your videos are wonderful and entertaining, also you are one of my favorite personalities on Channel Awesome. Sadly, I live in Thailand and have no credit cards or a paypal account so I cannot contribute to your Pateron. Secondly, the quip about Japanese and other Asian people being shorter does not reflect racially in the present day. A shorter stature among many ethnically Asian people in not due to genetics but due to a diet that was lacking in iron and calcium. Nowadays, because of better dietary supplements many Asian people of my generation (Born 1980's) are as tall as their Western counterparts. Thirdly, I personally tend to give older media a pass on the word "Oriental" due to the fact that at the time, it was the politically correct phrasing. the same way "Negro", "Colored", were once considered the more politically correct term than their alternatives, or how many used to call Latinos "Spanish"

I own this comic. This Popeye origin actually got some things very right. From the beginning, Elsie Segar (his creator) said that Popeye was born in a typhoon off the coast of Santa Monica. In civilian life, he apparently made his living money from prize fighting. But I believe his mother died when he was very little, and the name Ugly Kidd was totally made up. When they met up, Pappy said it had been so long, he couldn't remember what their family name was.

11:34 Linkara, I would recommend you to read a manga called ”Crying Freeman”. Why? Well, one of the characters almost has an uncanny resemblance towards the Dragging Lady. Fair warning though, the author of Crying Freeman, Kazuo Koike, also created Mad Bull 34, the infamous ”crotch grenade” manga series that was turned into a 4-episode OVA.

Perhaps it's also not remembering the details of the cartoons, but I didn't remembered how awesome was Popeye.

It's gonna be a while before I stop hearing the Miller Time version intro even when it is not.

Hey Linkara. This has nothing to do with the video itself but I was just wondering, in a horror movie, like "the thing", what would be your advice for creating an atmosphere of paranoia. I just came from your"the thing from another world" reviews, and had an idea for a short film. Basically, it would focus on a group of three/four people who awaken in a locked room. They don't know each other and their only information from the outside world is a letter that says," One of you is not what they seem". Soon paranoia sets in and they begin to distrust each other. It's hopefully going to be a bit of a tribute to,"The Thing" but the problem is I'm not a very good writer, so I was just wondering, in order to make a tense atmosphere, what is your advice. Thanks for reading and sorry for bothering you.

You should check out the original comic strips that Popeye debuted in. There's a reason he's one of the earliest examples of a comic superhero.

Putting aside the dated racism, (which could be said for any old cartoon character, yes even Micky Mouse) Popeye is one of those animated characters that holds a special place in my heart aside from Looney Tunes. Why, well it's like the songs says, "He's strong to the finish, cause he eats his spinach." He's a good role model for standing up for yourself, working out, and good dieting (eat your spinach kids). I just wish that there was a way to bring him into modern times. Ah well, maybe someday.

Weirdly enough in New 52 HARLEY QUINN Volume 4 “A Call to Arms” there is a Popeye-like character who eats mutated seaweed.

The Spinach thing is based on an old misunderstanding of lab test results, where the vitamin/mineral content in DEHYDRATED spinach was measured and not corrected for ... you know the 98% water that are in fresh, edible spinach. It's just another weed of the cabbage/lettuce/kale family, no spectacular superfood contents at all. and the arms have confused me now for a LONG time. If you are strong what will bulge out is your UPPER arms... the lower arms mostly contain muscles for your GRIPSTRENGTH, the strength of your punch is a mix of upper arm and Torso musculature. They basically draw a human crab that won't ever let go once something is in between the fingers. Not a punch-god.

I honestly don't get how the word Orient is racist. It is simply an archaic word for far East, which, considering the relative locations of England and the USA (where the English language comes from) it is an apt descriptor for Japan and (in general) its peoples. It's not like negro which acts as though the most important feature about a person is their color, it simply is a descriptor for the originating location of the person or group of people you are talking about, same as calling an American a "Westerner". Most articles I have looked up on the subject say it is because it conveys a meaning of exoticism, yet you can see that in the word's etymology, this isn't present. www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=orient I only gripe because is every word racist? Really? I mean by the same standard referring to any country or peoples in a directionally based way is "othering" and therefore wrong, even if the direction from one's personal frame of reference is the easiest way to identify the general area. (By this logic calling any american a "Southerner", "Northerner", "Westerner", or "Midwesterner" is "othering" them.)

Popeye was always supposed to be a jerk and just slightly better than his enemies that was the point of the character, in the newspaper strips at least.
