In this episode I fly to Popham to attempt my first visit by air for an event... I was warned it would be challenging & it certainly lived up to that reputation!
I try to keep as professional as possible on the radio, but as the stress builds my composure slips & the cracks start to show!
Nonetheless, I learned a great deal & the event itself was fantastic & well attended. I also got to meet up with Instagram's @south_coast_photo
Follow along to see how the flight worked out.

I’m not sure if it’s always like that, but I have to say that on that particular day I was exhausted just listening to the radio & hats off to the radio operator! 👏🏼

Thank you so much Kev 😊👍🏼 Popham was one of the locations I visited for my student solo Nav exercises. It was late evening last year… the contrast was phenomenal. With the event attracting so much traffic it was truly an assault on the senses 😳 As you know Popham also host the annual microlight trade fair & I like to attend, if I can. I’ve never flown in because I believed that it would be too stressful… this confirmed it! 😄 I’m too soft to cope with aviation challenges like that, at the moment, but you are right, I feel better for having done it!!! 😄👍🏼

Thank you so much, I was sooooo focused! I just kept thinking… ‘don’t stuff up the landing as there’s a huge queue behind you’ 😳 If you look carefully you can actually see the shadow of the aircraft that was following me on final as they had to go around 😔 I felt bad for them as they had to put up with another circuit of that stress! I edited out the audio for the last part as it was just relentless! Well done to the radio operator though!!!

Haha…. Well done indeed, Dark Lord…👏👏👍 A proper busy circuit environment…… and you handled it sooo well…. …. my brain was constantly trying to visualise the aircraft around you…..Brilliant !! …. Another sharp rise up the learning curve for us both !! ( also impressed by the controller, very calm and skilled ) I love the events at Popham, always well organised…. Keep ‘em coming, sir…. Captain Ray 👨‍✈️ P.S. 700 subs soon…??……😬 wow…… a credit to your content, sir ….. I remember you getting excited at 99 !! 🤣🤭

It was certainly a learning opportunity with my brain constantly in gear! I’m not sure if I would describe it as fun, but it was certainly engaging! 😄 Mark warned me that it was like bees around honey on days like that 😅 Thanks for flying with me again Captain 🫡 Blown away by the number of subscribers & views, surprised they are not bored of me but I’m trying hard to learn what might keep people entertained 🤞🏼

@@FlyingDarkLord Welll I can tell you, sir, nobody could become bored by your videos…. They are a constant source of interest…. Varied, structured, informative, engaging, unpredictable and very relatable…… Whether it’s by accident or design……. It’s working a treat….. There are plenty of aviators with channels on the tube with nowhere near the following you have achieved… In such a short space of time too, sir…. Keep it up , M’Lord….

Looking back I can see lots of mistakes I made, which is the advantage of filming my flights. Thanks for watching and for your comments 😊👍🏼 I’m sure you’ll do an even better job than I did, I’m still a low hours pilot so I’m still on a steep learning curve 😊

@@FlyingDarkLord I couldn't see one in your videos, but I fitted a rear-view mirror on my Quantum a few years back after being bullied in the circuit at Old Warden. A faster GA aircraft was behind me and telling me he was closing in on me when he should have taken a wider circuit, orbited or left the circuit and rejoined. Anyway, I couldn't see him and instead of continuing to land, I left the circuit and rejoined to land after him. it put the wind up me and I had my wife in the back who was a bit nervous anyway, but I had no idea how close he really was, hence the mirror. It's been a really useful addition. I'm awaiting delivery of my Nynja 600kg kit and will be putting a mirror on that, so will be joining you on the "Dark Side" soon 🤞

It upsets me to hear that there are such pilots who have little consideration for others 😡 Unless they were declaring an emergency, there is no rush & it reflects poorly on them that they behaved in that way! I’m so pleased to hear that you have a kit arriving 🥳 you must be so excited! I hope you’ll video your experiences so that we can share in them!
@125brat
@125brat Год назад
@@FlyingDarkLord Yes, disgraceful behaviour and not what you would expect from someone who is generally held in high esteem when people learn you're a pilot, but unfortunately those sort of people are in all walks of life. I'm excited at the prospect of building and flying my own aircraft from my own strip, but it's all being delayed because the kit is made in and shipped from Ukraine. The delay is insignificant compared to the problems the Ukrainian people are suffering though. I've been collecting bits ready for the build; instruments, strobes, switches, cable etc. but looking out for a good used 912S donkey. Yes, I will mount some cameras as and when, and if the content is up to it I'll put it on here😁

A busy arrival! I think that lady on your nav aid saying "approaching waypoint" repeatedly would have got right on my nerves. Nicely done, anyway.

I know what you mean, but given the need to avoid the noise abatement areas & fly a tight circuit I was pleased to have the reminder that at least something was going in the right direction! 😄 I can edit it out for future videos 👍🏼

Interesting that the incoming traffic was trying to reduce the air time by saying runway in use and QFE but the controller was still repeating it back. regardless. Using up more valuable airtime, is he required to?
@FlyingDarkLord
@FlyingDarkLord Год назад
You make a good point 🤔 I suspect he is obliged to ensure we have the correct information & must not assume we understand, especially when the circuit is so busy. Perhaps we as pilots could have made his life easier by not telling him what we thought was going on 🤷🏻‍♂️ Amazing how well he kept his cool despite the relentless nature of the traffic 💪🏽
@samuelharris6591
@samuelharris6591 Год назад
@@FlyingDarkLord I assumed that would be the case. If he tells you again there is no room for ambiguity. Quicker in that case then to not try and be helpful and stick to standard RT. I couldn’t believe how busy the net was, I thought at one point you had sped up the calls! Interesting to see at what point does someone say stop in the interest of safety.
@FlyingDarkLord
@FlyingDarkLord Год назад
I think that is my learning point for this flight, I will stick to very standard & brief radio call rather than trying to ‘help’. Although the video is edited for brevity, I must admit that watching it back is very much how it felt on the day! 😅

I kept hearing QFE 1002 and then on some occasions 1022?
@FlyingDarkLord
@FlyingDarkLord Год назад
It just so happened that on this particular day the QNH & QFE were very similar. As I’m sure you know, aircraft that are landing are given a barometric pressure setting (1002) so that their altimeters indicate zero feet at ‘Field Elevation’ or at the height of the airfield, whilst departing aircraft are given a barometric pressure setting (1022) so that their altimeters indicate zero feet at sea level (or ‘Nautical Height’). This is the protocol used in the UK but I think I’m America the pilots are left to use charts to determine the height of the airfield & are just given the barometric pressure for that particular day/region 🤷🏻‍♂️ Others are welcome to comment if I’ve got this wrong 😄👍🏼

I noticed the 1002 and 1022 calls also … and wondering why . Thanks for the explanation.
