Maybe separate the experiment into 2 parts in hopes for different results. Try mating the male dairy cows with the female oranges, and vice versa.

There are private companies that will take samples from you and provide a genetic barcode. Genetic barcodes can be (Roughly) used to determine relatedness. It's too complicated for me to get into at 3am, but if you're willing to pay a fee, you could get some of each barcoded and compared. There is what is called the "barcoding gap", which is to say the amount of difference between the two barcodes before you'd consider one a new species or subspecies. I'm a BSc Student doing Wildlife Biology so I can offer some information, but you could also reach out to your local museum and ask if they've got any isopod taxonomists they could recommend cooperate on the project with you.

I'm pretty sure we're talked about this before. I'm surprised you couldn't find more information on this. This is a relatively well documented phenomena. I have tried this and many others and failed. There are two prevailing theories: 1. These are not very closely related. Either different species or subspecies. 2. The "morph" or color that we see is actually a part of a larger more broad sweeping genetic mutation. And that mutation effects a lot of things. Their color is just the only immediately noticable difference for people. But it could play a part in their reproductive organs.
@Aquarimax
@Aquarimax 4 года назад
I was surprised too...only after I posted the previous video did I learn more about this, partly due to your helpful and informative comments. I tend to agree...something strange is going on here. The more I think about it, the more It seems likely they are not closely related enough to interbreed, and therefore they were isolated from different species. A mutation that created a population different enough to be unable to breed seems somewhat less likely, as it would represent a speciation event. Could have happened though. I am just trying to remember that new data can always change a hypothesis. 👍

Greetings Heretic nature and Russ, i wish to report my experience with orange x dairy cow: around 5 months ago i put toghether a group of oranges and dairy cows, and as now the colony have indeed produced several wild-type laevis , which are also completely absent from my "pure" dairy cow colony despite the latter being much larger than the former. I don't keep wild-types separately, so that rule out an "invasion" during maintenance, nor i ever seen them where i live. This seems to point that they can indeed interbreed... what do you think about it?

If you are looking for genetic distance, you'll want to take a look at "barcode of life". It uses PCR to amplify a small piece of mitochondrial DNA, which is then sequenced and used as a barcode. There are 25 porcellio species with barcodes, and 20 sequenced barcodes from P. laevis specimens. So there is a good chance to put the result of an experiment with the "dairy cows" into context. It's a relatively simple procedure. You could try to approach institutions that do biodiversity research. There are also hobbyist "biohacking" spaces, which could do the amplification...

Ever since i got my clean up crew for my terrarium i got sent Dairy cow and orange laevis, this was back in August. They have been sharing the enclosure ever since, for a 2 months i didnt notice much activity, i only got 8 of each. But not long after that there was a sight of a very little isopod baby, and then another one and so on and within a couple of weeks the food i was providing wasnt enough to the point of finding not much the next day, so one night i went spy mode and checked what was going on because while there is light in the room or during the day you rarely see any activity around, but once i set the terrarium up for night cycle BAM hundreds! I didnt see it coming it went from one little one to hundreds literally, i saw both dairy cow mating with dairy cow, orange with orange and after seeing your video i was also excited to see some wild type, but just like you stated, Orange dont seem as prolific as the dairy cow. There is certainly more cows than oranges. And there is no sign of wild types, so Im glad to see this update i was starting to worry about mines failing at their repopulating job hehe. Keep us posted!

I did this experiment, but by the hundreds. Ultimately the orange line vanished, leaving me with around 1000 dairy cows. A large portion of these have a very orange undertone. BUT I then crossed those resulting dairies with wild type and got some lovely calicos and just a few albino. Edit: also to mention, I noted the overall size of the dairycows has increased. Im unsure if they're carrying orange tropical genes, but it's suspicious the undercolour and size has changed in the last 2.5 yrs

@Aquarimax, You should try something that most probably haven't done. That is a Pandora's box. First, get a large random assortment of breeds of Isopods. The more, the better. Second, what is their preferences in temperature and humidity? Take the average. To understand amount of ventilation. - I've found that Isopods are capable of knowing where water is, so maybe adding a water section to do the humidity for you along with good ventilation may be an option. And last step, add everything into the same enclosure. See what kind of random morphs you may happen upon. At this point, you will merely see if you can find new morphs rather than anything else. Depending on how the morph looks, you can then theorize what kind of specie have paired and conduct experiments from that standpoint to verify your theory. The good point of a Pandora's box is that you rapidly diverge the gene pool. Two, you get a quick confirmation on your theories and three, you obtain a far more interesting result in behaviour between them. Not to mention, isopods love sugar. i.imgur.com/av7enMk.png - Example of a set-up. It provides a constant layer of moisture. If you do a larger enclosure, you can use a small water pump to keep the water moving and filtered properly, an hour-three hours a day. Not more needed. Add a bit of duckweed and it will be okay if it gets light.
@Aquarimax
@Aquarimax 4 года назад
Helveteshit Interesting concept! One thing that appears to happen with a mis of species is that one eventually outcompetes the other.
@Helveteshit
@Helveteshit 4 года назад
@@Aquarimax That is why, Pandora's box with as many species as possible. Like male cichlids. If you have too many, you can diffuse the risk of outcompetition. Of course, it can happen which is a risk. But the theory is, with enough breeds and variation. It will still struggle along. Sadly, I live in a country where it is hard to get what ever plant/insect or so, on my own compared to US. So I cannot conduct this type of idle things myself.

Cool Goby Fish it was extremely easy to get Orange Porcellio scaber to mate with Dalmatian Porcellio scaber without worrying about choosing males and females, so I figured i would try the same method. Try isolating out some young adult females of both orange and Dairy Cow. Keep them away from males until they have dropped all the litters they may carry from stored sperm, then pair a DC female and Orange male (and visa versa) and keep this pair together but by themselves, not in a colony setting, and see what happens, if anything.

Thanks :) I've been wanting to try this myself, but no time or space, lol. I noticed too that the Dairy Cows breed WAY faster than the oranges-- I received my first DC and orange laevis, of similar age/size, at the same time, along with some scabers and A. macs, and of all my pods the orange laevis were the last to drop mancae. They do seem to run a bit smaller than Dairy Cows as well. As you noted, though, the DCs and oranges have no issues with mating (or attempting to) with each other! I think the method I mentioned will be the only sure fire way to figure out what's going on, because in a colony setting you'll have not just orange and DC pairing, but DC to DC and orange to orange, and then those females will all have stored sperm. Either they can't couple successfully, like everyone is saying, or the color genetics somehow do not cross over, like in scabers, or they cancel each other out. Only having confirmed pairs, and females vacant of stored sperm, eggs, or carrying mancae, are going to really tell the story down the line. Hope you try this, I'm really looking forward to seeing what happens! :D

Are you still working on those yellow vulgare? I ended up getting rid of all mine after about 2 years of working on them because I started breeding fish again and didn't have space. But I still have 3 or 4 of the best looking ones I kept just too see how they would turn out. I think they are all females. If you're interested I'll send them to you. The ones I started with were wild caught in Louisiana. These last few are probably 4th or 5th generation of only selecting the most yellow individuals and some of them had a little white around the tail end instead of yellow. Theres also one that's a different morph that shows up in my backyard I'm not even sure how to describe it. It's kinda speckled brownish rusty looking but two tone with a more grey skirt.

Sadly they won't cross because they are likely different species or sub species. Dairy cows are a morph from a Spanish/African species but Orange are true laevis, I have wild type P.laevis and "big blues" which are wild type daory cows.

I just put my isopods into my scorpion enclosure to make it more bio active. Should I keep feeding them fruits, vegetables, calcium food inside the enclosure. and also what is the best nutritious food for isopods? I have heard that egg shell is very good for them and banana as well. And also is it necessary to have springtails to make it bio active?
@Aquarimax
@Aquarimax 4 года назад
poopRooster WR springtails help. Generally speaking, they will feed on the leavings of the scorpion, but adding a little calcium couldn’t hurt. I would recommend adding springtails if you can. They are especially good at taking care of mold.

Aquarimax Pets Thank you! Right now I have a succulent plant growing in there right now, but I think I want to add more. What type of plants do you recommend for an Asian forest scorpion setup? Or to go more abroad what type of plants would do well in a fairly humid environment? I am not a plant expert so I wouldn’t know what types of plants there are.

Aquarimax Pets should I feed my isopods that are in my scorpions terrarium. I must note that they already have food because I mixed in dry leaves(they were decontaminated by boiling) and frog moss and of course substrate. So I’m just wondering if I should feed them inside the enclosure because they already have food such as the leaves and substrate. And another question. Can I use wild caught springtails for my bio active enclosures. I know there is always a risk of harmful organisms and bacteria, but is it optional?

And should I use a grow light for my pothos and lemon button fern? Sorry about all the questions, I just don’t want to have something happen to my scorpion.

I am working on the same experiment! 🤣 I am a real idiot to think that I am the only one with this idea. 😅 My goal was to create Dalmatians with Orange specks or maybe Orange Milkbacks. Sadly, almost all of my Dalmatians died, while the Orange ones are still fine (only minor loss). This led me to assume that the Dalmatians are physically or even genetically weaker than the Orange laevis? Even though the Pandas were bigger and bulkier. I have yet to reach out to my supplier. Does anyone have a similar experience with their Dalmatians? Note that they were kept in the same box of course. Humidity was maybe too high, I still wonder why this would only affect the Dalmatians though.

m14srv ah, i see. What I mean is that if the dairy cows and oranges successfully cross, the first generation of offspring should be double hets for orange and dairy cow, but they would look exactly like wild types. It would take another generation before the orange and dairy cow traits resurfaced.

Are we sure that Dairy cows or orange are recessive? It could be that one is recessive and one is dominant or codom. Not every genetic trait is recessive.
@Aquarimax
@Aquarimax 4 года назад
Reptile Nexus I was assuming single-gene recessive because the same traits are recessive in Porcellio laevis, a closely related species, and because most isopod mutations are (not all). It appears there are other factors at work here, though.
