This video is an older patreon video, just tried uploading to yt and it went through without getting blocked:) So here you go. This video was made on a whim late at night, and I am forever glad I decided to give this a listen. It has become a repeat listen many times over for me. I am listening as I type this heheh:) Thanks for creating masterpieces like this Mr. Wilson (and co.) Thanks for watching, see you soon.

All new to me. Don't believe I know anything from them. Looking forward to it. I'm not sure about that last comment I just went through the comments below and it looks like this is probably going to be heavier than what I usually enjoy but I'll see how long I can stick with it... Halfway through first tune. Reminds me of Riverside. I'm enjoying it. Thanks. 2 for 2 so far. Unfortunately Heni arrives soon here in CT. I'm on storm duty and need to go in tomorrow. Bummer for our 29th wedding anniversary , but we were able to enjoy a nice meal out with the family today to celebrate. Snuck it in before a possible multi day power outage event. Looking forward to picking this back up between support shifts. All the best

@@daveking9393 I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I don't like my music too heavy either, but PT is so, so good. This album is middle ground or a bit more for them heavywise, but it never gets _very_ heavy.) Excellent band!

It’s an amazing album, thanks for putting this on YT for everyone to see . Can I suggest the earlier album ‘Lightbulb Sun’ for a similar treatment. It’s another one which is consistently amazing. Although having said that, a poor Porcupine Tree track is something of an oxymoron.

The funny thing about PT is that every album is different genres. This album is probably their most rock/metal. Their older stuff is very Floydian and some poppy. Steven Wilson’s solo stuff you can dive into jazz etc.

Their drummer Gavin Harrison is amazing. He is now with a group that have been around for a long as Porcupine Tree called "The Pineapple Thief" Their albums are really good but since Gavin joined them [ on 4 studio albums so far + 1 live album & dvd ] he has transformed them into something spectacular. He has also become one of the writers. This group is as close now to Porcupine Tree as any group could get yet with their own personal stamp retaining their own recognizable sound. They have without a doubt filled the gap Porcupine Tree left behind. - Never saw this reaction first time around. I really enjoyed this. Thankyou.

They're a huge and highly respected name among "more recent" prog rock crowds. And Steven Wilson, "the hardest working man in prog" is absolutely one of the biggest names in that bubble. But... it just goes to show the limits of such bubbles, and how easily good music can fail to reach the masses it deserves. I'm glad you finally discovered them :-)

Love this album. Quick note, the whole album is inspired by a novel written by Bret Easton Ellis called Lunar Park, seen from the point of view of the child in the novel (Bret's son) instead of himself (note the novel is kind of autobiographic mixed with fantasy and supernatural). Specifically the song My Ashes is very reminiscent of the last chapter of the book. Highly recommended to anyone who likes this album.
@carlpeterson8182
@carlpeterson8182 2 года назад
Yes. I I have never read the novel. About the album, I always think it is in the POV of the child so some of it is true and some is not. But the child thinks and feels like it is true. Enough of it is probably true that those things, the prescription drugs and desensitization, and the uncaring family, need to be addressed. It is a wild or over dramatic (maybe) of what is happening with some of the youth today but especially in the '90's and 00's.

I'm sure someone below probably mentioned this, but just in case: the guitar solo at the 4:00 mark of Anesthetize is Alex Lifeson of Rush. ALL of the guys in Rush thought / think that Porcupine was/is the shit. The story is that Alex Lifeson was so taken by the band, that he called up Steven Wilson at the time this album was being recorded and ASKED Steven Wilson if he could do a guitar solo for one of his songs, and so he did the guitar solo on Anesthetize. Also, Gavin Harrison (the drummer for PTree, and now playing with both The Pineapple Thief AND King Crimson) was good friends with Neil Peart. And they both had a healthy respect for each other, in addition to being friends.

I wish more people would do full album reactions. All the best music is elevated to an even higher level with the added context. I feel you would also really be into a band named The Dear Hunter. They have a more upbeat tone generally, but have a lot of similarities to Steven Wilsons music in the best possible way. It was from a TDH community that I was pointed in the direction of PT. They have a 5 album concept series that go by the Titles Act I - V. It is a must listen if you are into this kind of more detailed music. Even if you don't get enough recommendations to react to it, you shouldn't deprive yourself of it.

This is one of the best album reviews I have seen of this PT album or of any album on YT. Great job. I am a huge Rush fan but PT reminds me so much of them and is one of my favorites. Of course Alex did the solo for Anestthize. But PT seems to be heavily influenced by Rush and especially Pink Floyd. mix those two together and maybe parts of a few other bands and you get PT. Great band. My favorite 90's prog band (I know they came out in 1987 but I heard them in the 90's. Same time as Dream Theater and Spock's Beard. I like them also but PT was always the most interesting and most musical.

First reaction: "sounds like me". Yeah, that was me the whole song when I was 12, in 2007. When it came out and i went to my first PT concert I could really relate, even when my english as a dutch kid was not very good. Even more when I started to understand the lyrics. And then I understood it as culture critisism about what modern youth have to go through, leading to medical diagnoses, medication, existensial crisises, suicide and yeahhhhh stufffff

Fun fact: Porcupine Tree WAS Steven Wilson, He was playing around in his basement on homemade studio equipment, and put out a few singles in the UK that started getting popular. He and Richard Barbieri (the masterful keyboardist) did a couple of EPs and next thing you know, people wanted to see them live, so they had to get a band together, and PT was born. The name Porcupine Tree was meant as a joke because there was no band. He even made up names for the non-existent members. I found them in 1998 on an MP3 site (look it up) that gave you three "albums" when you signed up, and Up the Downstairs by PT was one I chose, and I couldn't have been happier! I've been a huge Steven Wilson fan ever since and have all his albums (PT and solo, Blackfield) ans 3 concert Blurays. The man is brilliant. Thanks for doing this and spreading the word about PT. Definitely a band that deserved MUCH more recognition than they ever got.

Opening riff of “ Sleep Together” is wicked! Then the vocal distortion is heavy, sic & wicked. This is what I hear. The boy is miserable and hates his life. A girl he knows is unhappy and wants to quit and leave this Earth. The unhappy girl liked him for quite some time and she likes the attention he’s giving her. He might have told this girl she’s pretty and they may have kissed once. The girl develops strong feelings for the boy. She wants to get physical with this boy. He tells her in secret “I’m miserable”. You’re miserable. Let’s sleep together and die in my bed. She falls deeply in love with him and doesn’t care anymore about her life. “Sleep Together “ is so haunting vocally and musically. VeryDark! Sounds like a murder, suicide.
