What I love is that the bass line is consistent even amidst the chaos. It never deviates from the groove.

“You’ve got the whole drum set, why not use it?” Is the definition of Gavin Harrison, and it’s always tasteful. He’s my favorite drummer in the Prog game today. You should definitely check out Trains and Anesthetize! Rock on man

Glad that you returned to Porcupine Tree. You have less than a month to prepare for the release of their first album in 13 years. Suggest you try ‘Trains’ and ‘Fear of blank planet’ before hitting the magnum opus’s of ‘Arriving Somewhere but not here’ and ‘Anesthetize.’ Once tagged ‘the best band that you have never heard of’ it is a mystery why they never were more popular than they were, maybe its because they were not so radio friendly or maybe it was just lack of promotion but they have a huge catalogue of great music. I can also highly recommend the solo albums of lead singer and composer Steven Wilson, particularly ‘The raven that refused to sing’ and ‘Hand cannot Erase’.

They are extremely popular for the timeframe they operate in. But yes, they are underrated. Could be worse, they could be Tool (extremely overrated)

What a groove of a song. Sat in the pocket the whole time, I like that. It had a good feel. It's nothing too complicated but again what a groove. A lot of space for the drummer to play around, and he did play around didn't he? Was intrigued by what score you were gonna give. Drummer ended up killing it. Good live performance for me.

Well ... it was tight. Way Out Of Here has a score of 8.4. :D Anyway, thank you. I like the reactions to this band. They are usually very interesting. Drummer Gavin Harrison is an animal.

I guess it's the title that caught my eye "Hatesong", this is actually not bad, and the bass player has a nice slide. Your observations of the musical aspect are way beyond my abilities, but I did enjoy this one, I get a mellower Tool kind of feel to it.

Don't feel bad about saying it's something you'd fall asleep to. Porcupine Tree is one of my all-time favorite bands, and they are also one of the bands I like to fall asleep to with my mp3 player/headphones. Heck, I even fall asleep easy to Vektor - Terminal Redux (my favorite album of 2010 - 2019) and that album is blackened progressive thrash metal 🙂

I wholeheartedly agree with you on the dissonance. cant stand it when it's there just to be there. it serves almost no purpose when over used or not used correctly.

Exactly. I have no problem with dissonance as long as it's serves a purpose, and it resolves.

I feel like the performance of this song fits perfectly with its theme, i think of a bunch of teenagers in a garage going "muh muh let's make a song about a teacher i hate muh", Wilson yelling "yeeaaah yeaaaah yeeaaah" for no real reason gives me that impression too, the dissonance and the messy instrumental bits are the teens showing off all the cool dumb things they can do on their instruments.
