I love the meta humor of a song about a song. Fun fact: this song came before and inspired Tenacious D And The Pick Of Destiny-- AND Dave Grohl played the devil in BOTH!

I thought it was based on the legend of the composer Giuseppe Tartini, which has a similar tale where the devil played to him in a dream a song he described as "the best" and he did a sonata trying to replicate it, legend says he wasn't happy with it because it wasn't even close. :P

Fun facts: a 12:51 man in the black jacket is Ben Stiller, and at 12:58 the man in a black hoodie and glasses is Liam Lynch (of 'United States of Whatever' fame), director of this music video, director of Pick of Destiny, and pretty good singer/song writer in his own right

If you listen to the original version (from the old HBO show) it's a lot more obvious that Tribute is about stairway, both musically and story-wise. It's never not funny.

I spent a lot of this video laughing at you laughing. You didn't recognise Dave Grohl? Wow, I'm stunned. The whole thing is schtick, it's kitsch and it's great for what it is. They're both so invested in this and that adds to the hilarity. Cheesier than a block of Gorgonzola but brilliant all the same. Great review and great score given. The song and video have made me smile and laugh so many times over the years.

This song on a deeper level, reminds me of being up all night playing music on coke and whiskey, at some point you all come together and perform "the best song ever", but the next day you can't remember it so you try a tribute.

Someone used this song as a babymetal tribute song. When Jack black sings the lyrics there appears a shining demon,it cuts to a view of yuimetal. When they bang on the door to the shopping mall booth,it cuts to yui and moa laughing with headphones on. And many more. A good cut to BOH the bassist when he snorts. Copy and paste this should bring it up. It is on the youtube channel babymetal tube.

Somehow I kind of miss the magic of the band from before they made a real record (when they just had the TV show and their live act). All the bravado and pomposity was REALLY REALLY funny in the context of two guys trying to make open mic night seem like Love At Budokan

I agree that they're more akin to slapstick and Spinal Tap is more wit. But I gotta say the concept of this song is pretty clever. The title makes you think they're presenting this as the greatest song ever, but no, this is just a song about the greatest song ever, but we did play the best great song ever that one day "please believe me!" I think that's a pretty clever bit.

jack black commented in an interview about the idea of becoming a serious band that plays serious music. he said something to the effect that that wasnt what tenacious d was about; it wasnt who he and kyle were. (im paraphrasing here of course; just going off what i remember of the interview)

This is from the movie Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny, which btw has a lot of cameos with a few rocks stars such as Meatloaf and Dio to name a couple. The devil in this video was none other than Dave Grohl which played the drums for a little band name Nirvana and later became the front man and guitarist for the Foo Fighters.

I don’t think you are really appreciating how excellent the guitar and vocal work is. Even if you feel the song structure is relatively straightforward. You should see the original version of this from their 1997 HBO series. Just the two of them with acoustics.

I am from Los Angeles, I do know who VTB is, and yes I absolutely "stole" that from him. I did take it and change it a bit so it wasn't COMPLETELY stolen (putting that little break in between the two words), but the basic jist of it is absolutely from him. We're all thieves in the entertainment industry, and who knows maybe one day he'll "steal" something from me. If he does, I'll say good luck to him and I hope it works for him.
