I remember when I first brought home In Absentia on the recommendation of a friend, I guess it was kind of around the time it came out, I guess around '02 or '03, and I played it on the drive home and I LITERALLY sat in the car listening to the entire rest of the album in the parking lot of my apartment complex because I *could not* pull myself away from it until the very last note.
@@PeteOliva Same. I got this in late 2002 off of an Opeth forum. In Absentia completely changed how I listened to music. I remember just being blown away by Blackest Eyes and into Trains. Just that time where I sat back and was just blown away. It got me into music and started my music career at that time. Ahhh, youth...
agreed. My favourite song of all time. I will never be tired of this song. The siren build up catches me everytime and I turn into an irresponsible driver when listening to this in my car (dont tell my insurance)
The record IN ABSENTIA made me fall in love with Porcupine Tree, absolutely wonderful progtrip! Beautiful yet dark atmosphere and intelligent (catchy) songs. Trains is gorgeous, a track where vocals and music melt perfectly together. ...and that guitarsolo, goosebumps! Awesome breakdown again Geebz! 🤘
If I had to pinpoint exactly what made me want to put their discography on my playlist, it was probably when I realized Nine Cats and Sleep Together were the same band. What I love about Porcupine Tree is how diverse their style can be and yet their music is still consistently good. In Absentia is my favorite album though, for sure.
No one mentions this, but the clapping is meant to be reminiscent of trains going over tracks… love your reactions Geebz! Do this song live from Chicago too. And Normal too. Great licks on that one.
Whoah, this is gorgeous. Everything about it. Nearly a half century aged and this is my first Porcupine Tree listen! My window is open and I was just thinking, if anyone hears this, how could they not like it! What a beautiful piece of music. I've only heard one of Steven Wilson's songs & am stoked to hearing more of both, his solo work, and Porcupine Tree! When I close my eyes, this song really gives the essence of a railroad and riding on a train traveling through different places. I'm sorry for a long-winded post. Have an awesome weekend! Mr Geebz, do you have Jeff Buckley on your list?
@@jakobhund4830 For certain. Always keeping JB's memory alive through his beautiful, passionate music .. and keep all of 'our' late, beloved artists in our hearts through their works. 💜
@@ltlt1219 For Porcupine Tree, check out Stars Die, Lightbulb Sun, Fadeaway, Disappear, Moon Touches your Shoulder, Lazarus. That's a good start there. For Steven Wilson solo works No Part of Me, Deform to Form a Star, Harmony Korine, Veneno para las Hadas, Insurgentes, Raven that Refused to Sing, Routine, Ancestral (If you don't mind heavy), Drive Home, Song of Unborn, , A Door Marked Summer, Refuge and King Ghost. That'll be a good trip from the beginning of his solo stuff to his most recent. He's not afraid to try something new...... He's also worked with Blackfield and No-Man. Storm Corrosion is a spectacular album in my opinion, which he created with Mike Akerfeldt from Opeth.
If you liked this, I can only urge you to listen to _"Heartattack in a layby"_ from the same album. Very restrained instrumentalisation, but vocal layering to die for!
Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson's prog albums are, to me at least, the direct musical continuation of prog legends such as pink floyd. Such a shame it will only ever see maybe 5% of the recognition it deserves. These days when Wilson does an interview, most of the comments don't even know who he is.
naga munchetty (BBC) did the most horrible interview with him when his album 'To The Bone' did very well in the charts. was frustrating to see. almost like she just wanted him to say nothing and leave the studio... oh well....
Hearing this and Blackest Eyes back to back.. what a memory. I had never even heard of the band prior to that. I swear I listened to them both for hours on repeat, tears consistently in my eyes the whole damn time. Absolutely ethereal, this track is.
I live in India. And i travel thrice a year to my Grandmother's home and i always used to go by airplanes from my childhood. But after listening to this song , now i always and always persist and choose trains. I just book a ticket and choose a window seat, put on my earphones, and play this song while gazing out the window and seeing the landscape. Amazing feeling and it's so calm and peaceful. One of my evergreen song! ❤️
I saw these guys in Buffalo NY some years back and I remember shouting the title of this song during a quiet little moment in between songs. It was a relatively small venue so I knew it stood out when I said(yelled) it, Steve then looked right at me and gave a subtle smirk, and they continued the show. Well approximately 35 minutes or so later the show was seemingly over, but then admist the dim lighting and roaring applause the lights then suddenly illuminated in a very dramatic encore-esque moment and the band broke right in to the song. Probably one of the more sublime live music experiences I ever had ❤️
I think you're a PT fan now, LOL. Bro you should really check out Pineapple Thief "White Mist" Gavin Harrison from Porcupine Tree is the drummer. Pineapple Thief are right up there with the great Prog bands, IMO. It's a rabbit hole you wont regret going down.
Porcupine Tree is incredible. Their "Anesthetize" live concert is the best thing ever, I listen to it constantly. They nail EVERY song even better than on the studio albums. You should watch it!
@@hendrikwasgehtsiedasan7103 No, he unfortunately listened to the studio version of "Anesthetize", which isn't NEARLY as good as the live version off of the Anesthetize live album. Anesthetize is a live concert film by Porcupine Tree, released on 20 May 2010. They perform the song "Anesthetize" live on the film, which I think is the greatest live performance of a song ever.
@@rmr5044 I was like "wait, hasn't he made a video on that one already?" So I went in his channel, looked for anesthetize and just looked at the thumbnail which has the picture of the live version on it so I just went on to comment. Also Doug made a video on anesthetize as well but he watched the live version so I must have switched those two up Sorry for commenting without actually thinking
Wow I never thought anyone would do a reaction of Porcupine Tree, let alone Trains. One of my top favorite songs. I see you have a older reactions for porcupine tree haha. I never even thought of looking. I completely fell in love with Trains. I also love Aurora, Joseph Arthur, Chad VanGaalen, Rufus wainwright, Marilyn Manson and Nine inch nails. So yeah people can be different.
LOVE me some Porcupine Tree. Have you checked out Riverside yet? If not I strongly recommend doing so. They're cut from the same cloth for sure. "The Depth of Self-Delusion" would be a great starter song from them.
I remember that Anathema was the support act for Porcupine tree during a tour. I was an Anathema fan so I bought tickets for this concert, not knowing anything about Porcupine Tree. I downloaded a few songs and thought: this is kinda nice, but anyway I get to see Anathema. Of course Anathema is to big to be the support act of any band, but Porcupine Tree completely blew me away. I've been a fan ever since. I am so happy that I got the chance to see them live a couple of times, I was in the crowd during the filming of the Anesthetize dvd. For me this is one of the best bands ever.
@Matthew Gammon Well, don't give your dreams up. There is some activity around Porcupine Tree. They lounged a new website and from today there is an Instagram account. Maybe I am one of the few who thinks Porcupine Tree will get back together, at least for one album and/or tour, but hope is a good thing right?
Porcupine Tree took a while to get into, but now they're my favorite band. Hatesong, Slave Called Shiver, Sentimental, The Start of Something Beautiful, The Sound of Muzak, and The Moon Touches Your Shoulder are also worth checking out.
What happens now to the dark matter we all end up sleeping together while fearing a blank planet as stars die around the light bulb sun trying to find a way out of here awaiting a heart attack on layby. I'll go home now. Edit: You could say I'll be arriving somewhere...
I feel like Nil Recurring often does not get mentioned when talking about PT albums since it is essentially a b side album with FOABP. But all 4 songs are quite incredible IMO.
@@terrymtbnurse4760 Geebz would love the video for a specific reason, but I don't want to spoil it for him. Please the fan created one to include the entire song though. Crystalised would be another amazing choice.
This was THE song that got me completely hooked on Porcupine Tree. I sure wish they'd get back together. Their music is magical and always takes me on journeys.
Alright!.....now need to do some "Riverside" or "Lunatic Soul" since Steven Wilson has done at least one collaboration with MARISA DUDA. Maybe "Lost", "Embryonic" or "Lament" form Riverside, or "Adrift", "Lunatic Soul", or "Suspended in Whiteness" from Lunatic Soul.
Love this review. I would like to draw your attention to the breathtaking drumming by Gavin Harrison. So tasteful, so engaging. He just always is doing EXACTLY the right thing. He's not Danny Carey, he's Gavin Harrison and he's so good.
I saw them touring The Incident in Montreal in 2009 not long after the album came out. They played The Incident as it’s meant to be listened to without stopping. Then a 10 minute break and they played other material for an hour. They closed out with Trains and EVERYONE there was clapping along perfectly during those parts , it was absolutely amazing and such a wonderful experience.
I was there a s well! Actually my first time hearing The Incident ever live was an incredibly unique experience. One of the few bands out there that actually sound better live then on CD! Completly blown away by this show!
@@theboiviin5951 that’s awesome. I happened to be in Montreal for work with a free night that night. I’m normally in BC and would have never been able to go otherwise. It’s one of those shows I’ll remember forever.
This is one of PT's finest songs. Range, dynamics, interesting transitions, beauty, and the recording/engineering is just so on point. Love the unexpected banjo/clap portion and it transports you towards a past time, on a train, drifting, playing simple music.
Would really love if you reacted to the live version of Porcupine Tree’s «Hatesong», which in my opinion is their most well put together performance with lots of small surprises throughout.
I came across PT late but they have quickly become my favorite band, surpassing TOOL and SOAD which are pinnacle bands for me and I never thought someone could swoop in and pass them like that, but literally everything Porcupine Tree does is so unique and inspiring. I have YOU to thank for that discovery, btw Geebz! I was watching your videos and your reaction to Arriving Somewhere... came up, I was instantly hooked and have been ever since. THANK YOU!
Beaut of a song. Check out "Sound Of Muzak" by Porcupine Tree. One of the best hooks in recent years... well in the last 20 years! keep up the good work.
First heard PT during the house music before an Incubus show (their Morningview tour). I was hoping someone would name the band and the song, and they did: "Blackest Eyes", by Porcupine Tree. I spent the entire concert reminding myself of that so I could look it up as soon as I got home. Have been a fan of them, and everything Steven Wilson does, ever since. For me, he's up there with Devin Townsend as one of the most versatile and brilliant artists out there today.
This is such a superb song. By the way, after 12 years of waiting there is a new PT song: Harridan - I still can't believe we will get another album from these masterminds after all these years! So goddamn hyped!!!
A client of mine burned PT's In Absentia album for me, as I'd never heard of them at that time. First song I heard was Blackest Eyes...and I was HOOKED! PT is an incredible band!
I love this track, it makes me think of a train ride, and the song itself takes you on a journey. I really enjoyed the banjo section, it was just a nice quiet, self-reflective part of the song that gives enough narrative headroom to let you contemplate where this song puts you. It's just wonderful, and is definitely going into my personal playlist.
Can we get a video about Pure Reason Revolution? I'm super curious to see your reaction to that band. I'd recommend anything from the Eupnea record, it's an amazing piece of work.
@@matthiaswouters If you are a fan of The Dark Third then the latest record is right up your alley. Listening to both records back to back makes for a great time. Hope you enjoy!
Great reaction! Love Porcupine Tree and this song especially really resonates with me. Would also love to see a reaction to "Nighttime Disguise" by Leprous from their new album, its such a great song with much to dissect! Keep it up!
This is one of my favorite songs of all time. I remember being in a shitty ass job that I hated as a teenager 20 year ago and riding my bike to it while listening to this and just realizing that you can take joy in life when it is presented to you, as long as you recognize it and enjoy it. It made not just that day, but my entire life better and I will always attribute that lesson to this song in my mind.
I feel the same! I always listen to music while riding my bike to my shitty ass job (though I quit so I'll leave soon, yay) and it's usually what keeps my spirit up. Especially going back home, of course.
Instant goosebumps at the build up around the 11 minute mark. Trains was the first song I heard by PT back around 2006. Gorgeous song and still a favorite of mine.
Fun fact about the clapping is that it’s supposed to mimic the sound of the railroad tracks when you ride in a train. That’s why it’s not straight forward tempo clapping like let’s say a Boston song, but it’s quite syncopated.
This was the first album I heard from PT. Great band! Now for my Double Barrel Friday request- King Diamond “Abigail” and Mercyful Fate “Desecration of Souls”
One of my all-time favorite tracks! It's really just one of those perfectly composed pieces of music, in my opinion. I don't think that I've ever NOT wanted to hear the entire thing once I've heard those opening notes.
Hey Geebz! You should do some Riverside! My favorite one is "Goodbye Sweet Innocence" from their 2011 album "Memories in my Head" but it's their least listened song on spotify LOL. Wouldn't be a good introduction I guess! More popular ones by them: O2 Panic Room / Lost (why should i be frightened by a hat?) / The Same River
This song, this album, then the 2 albums that followed (although all are great) are perfection in my humble opinion. In every way... Musicianship, production, arrangements. Wonderful stuff I go back to weekly
So many other awesome PT tracks though (this one is great too.) Fear of a Blank Planet, Blackest Eyes (my fave personally,) The Raven that Refused To Sing - omg such emotion on this one. Edit: I know the last one is Steven Wilson solo and I'm not changing it lol.
I’m in love with this piece. From the very first listen. One of the RU-vid videos has the best comment on this song: “I’d give anything to hear this song for the first time again.” Could not have summed up my feelings better.
