Porpora: Polifemo, opera in three acts | George Petrou & Armonia Atenea 

I love this opera by Porpora!

Avec Max Cencic l'émerveillement est toujours présent. Ce grand monsieur du baroque mériterait quelques statues indéboulonnables tant ses apports et ses contributions dans ce domaine sont nombreux et frappés des sceaux de la qualité et du sérieux. Depuis l'Artaserse de Vinci il ne cesse d'inonder le monde musical de ses bienfaits. Longue vie à Max-Emanuel Cencic. Petite remarque cependant. Je n'ai pas l'impression que les répétitions aient été très nombreuses et quand je les remarquent le nez collé à la partition j'ai le sentiment qu'ils déchiffrent, ce qui ne peut guère aller de pair avec une exécution magistrale.

Max’s aria at 1.59:30 is truly breathtaking - in that I marvel at how he keeps his breath as he hurtles through the notes with consummate ease. His diction, tone and volume of voice are so perfect it makes me want to cry. But who can shed a tear which this lively zestful delivery carries one higher and higher…!! Ahhh - perfection!

Spectaculair!

Preziosa proposta di un altro degli innumerevoli tesori dell'opera barocca. Porpora non è forse emozionante come il suo rivale Vinci, ma la qualità della musica è comunque decisamente alta. Bravi tutti gli esecutori. Menzione speciale per la brevissima Calipso e per i fantastici assoli a fine aria di Galatea. Unica menda: bene i tagli nei recitativi, molto meno bene i tagli di diverse, troppe, arie.

Opéra musicalement splendide (riche en superbes récitatifs accompagnés, arias qui révèlent l’amour effréné de la mélodie, de la beauté du chant et des coloratures somptueuses), interprétation magnifique, éblouissante par tous les interprètes de très haut niveau, Mynenko magistral, Lezhneva aussi, orchestre merveilleux

I thought these socalled baroque specialists were supposed to be paragons of "correct" performance practice, authenticity etc. but there are quite a few cuts in many of these performances, and no matter how impressive it is to hear what modern counternors/sopranists can do, there is still a long way to the exalted level of singing of the original era of these operas for ALL voice types, not only for the countertenors. Many trills are fudged, the dictions is frequently bad etc.
