For a little over three years now, we have been the fortunate owners of a 2004 Porsche 911 (996) Twin Turbo Cabriolet with the X50 option. This is the one year earlier version of the 2005 Turbo S.
The 996 Turbo’s Mezger engine was initially designed for the well-known 911 GT1 Le Mans racer, designed by Hans Mezger, which is what makes these 996 and 997 Porsche (GT2, GT3 and the Turbo) cars so special.
We are going to take you on a ride through the Colorado mountains as we talk about the pros and cons to ownership of this car, and then present you with a finishing touch of the interior along with an engine tour and underside view of the car.
We hope you enjoyed the video. If you did, please give it a “Thumbs up” and Subscribe to Heidi and Franny’s Garage for more videos to come. Also, click the little “Bell” by the Subscribe button to get notified when we release new videos - usually Saturday mornings.
We do lots of types of videos on this channel: Vlogs, How To/Hacks/DYI, Travel, Events, etc. Check out some of the other videos we have on our channel.

I agree, good review. I would just point out that ALL Mezger's do not have IMS bearings. IMS issues exclude the 996TT (A Mezger).

Nick Murray sent me here... one of the best reviews of this car / 996 in general I've seen. Well done. I bought a 2003 c2 last year and swapped out the Porsche IMS for a dual row and haven't looked back. I also modified the exhaust. The amount of car for the money with the 996 is incredible. With some smart shopping and proper maintenance the NA cars are nothing to be afraid of... Thank you for these great videos!

+audioisgood that's awesome. Welcome. Our goal is to try to start putting out reviews much more often. We will hopefully have some cool do it yourself videos for 996 related items too. For example, Franny cuts open the oil filter. A very helpful way to deal with 996 oil changes. Heidi

If you are interested in attending the show, it is free I believe but it is a fundraiser to raise money for JD. If you would like to meet us there, we can visit and possibly eat lunch there. We will be there most of the early hours of the day past lunch. The address is. 11701 Community Center Dr, Northglenn, CO 80233. It's called JB Rains Park. The address is different in a couple of places. It might be 11801 as well. Sorry to be unclear. It is our first time at this location. Car show is 9 to 1 or so. See you there. Heidi

Thanks for the real world review. I am a former 993 C4S owner. Looking at my friends 02 TT 6spd 40k miles. No X50 but it has some nice upgrades like PSS10 suspension, H&R sway bars, AWE exhaust, IPD intake plenum etc. Coolant lines are welded and has a new clutch, light weight flywheel and Numeric shifter and cables. I expect the spoiler hydraulics will eventually fail. I hope the radiators are ok.

Thanks so much it's so much more clear how you explain things to details. It's the only review so far that does so and I believe it will stay this way. For example, I never knew what the buttons for. I'd like to know what the difference are between 996.1 turbo and 996.2 turbo engine wise, are there differences? Also the 997.1 turbo and 997.2 turbo has different engines, which is better and is the newer one totally different? However thanks for your unique video it's really great, keep it up ! !
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 7 лет назад
+Shihon Lam thanks. I prefer the Mezger. I know that later 997s had a different engine. I am pretty sure the 997.1 is the fastest Mezger. The 997.1 is the last of the Mezger, like the last of the air cooled. It is highly sought after too. It's just another 20k to 30k. Heidi.

Beautiful opening shots of this video. The 996 is an underrated car, but a bargain for those who can get past the stigma's. Hi Sam, you are correct! I believe 2005 was the last year for the option sticker under the bonnet. We had a 2006 Boxster and it did not have the sticker. On the pre-2006 that option sticker can be a good sign that the bonnet has not been replaced ;) Franny

Hi girls, how ya'll doin'? The 911 is my favorite car forever. Never had one, not likely to, but i keep in touch. I've never heard of Porsche explaining why they moved from a plain bearing to a roller bearing on the intermediate shaft. An independent US Porsche garage did some research into the bearing failure and they found that almost all of the cars involved were 2nd or 3rd family cars, typically garaged most of the time and taken out for a spin now and again. Cars used frequently had no bearing issues apparently. So buy one and use it! Stay safe and keep up the good work.

The X50 option is not just this and that stuff. It transforms the Turbo, technically and performance wise, to a GT2.
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 7 лет назад
Right. It was bigger turbos (same as the GT2), Fins on the intercoolers are extended, and the ECU is remapped. The "normals" boost to 0.7bar where the X50 will boost stock to 1.0bar. If you don't want to fuss with aftermarket or you want to keep the car original, the X50 is pretty awesome. There isn't nearly as big a price jump now in the used market. I'm not sure what the percentage made was, but they are virtually identical to the '05 S without that premium. My understanding.

Love your videos! I have a 996 non turbo cab. After watching your 356 story etc I have some questions. -was the 356 your first porsche? -why do you love cabs and (white) Porsche’s so much? -cost for each purchase and maintenance $ invested in each Porsche? -is your car collection for long term investment or just fun - both? -any plans to buy other cars, and is this 996 your newest Porsche? I’d think the 996 will start climbing in value soon.. time will tell! It would be awesome if you did a video with an overview of your complete collection w prices paid. :) People love hearing about the $$ part, at least I do. I spent about $20k fixing my baby up in the last year alone. There’s no such thing as a cheap Porsche.

Wow, that was a lot of questions! So, we have a recent video covering the costs of the 996TT. We will be making videos for the other cars as well :) Yes, the 356 was our first, but it has been in Heidi's family for almost 60 years! Cabs are great. Once you feel the freedom of no roof, you just can't go back ;) White just sort of worked out, but certain cars rock certain colors and I think Porsche can rock white, yellow, and a few others... Ferraris rock red like no other brand :) The latest car is actually the 993. We got that to replace our '06 Boxster S that we sold to a friend. I know they can be a bit expensive to get sorted, but once there they are really solid. Enjoy your car!

Just stumbled on your channel, really like two owners / real people reviewing their car! Just a question to you two ladies, I dont think I would use a turbo to its intended use , I'm nervous about buying a car I desire with so much downside ( re: ims/rbs) . Would you support going turbo to avoid those issues ? I'm not sure what issues the turbo brings to the table.......
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 6 лет назад
Hi there! Welcome to our channel. I actually was interested in a C4S (wanted the all wheel drive). Then I test drove the turbo and couldn't believe how FUN it was!!! So, I am not sure I am using it for it's intended turbo purpose either. I really love my car. I have no regrets about purchasing. Plus, turbo's tend to hold their value unless you own an extremely rare P car. However, the 911s with the potential other issues are decent cars if well cared for. It all depends on your budget and your commitment to regular maintenance and such. Hope that helps. Heidi

Yes. Fat gecko’s are awesome. The more cups, the less shake. We use with either sony or GoPro. It also depends on your car. For example, The turbo has such a close to the ground, bumpy ride, that we do have shake issues. I honestly try not to keep them mounted on the cars on freeways. I worry. They are very serious. Thanks much for this, appreciate the detail (I'm an EE), as I'm contemplating a purchase of almost the same car (except no x50). Question for you experts: will I hate myself if I get the Tiptronic? I've owned a couple of manuals (so I have nothing to prove), my autocrossing days are over (but I still have that attitude), I'll be driving mostly in traffic and it hurts my back to be constantly shifting (though those are pretty bad excuses). Thx!

Hi Carolyn, congrats on your new car! I hear the Tip on these cars is super reliable and maybe even a bit faster ;) Understanding what the mechanic is saying is actually huge. It can be a short, dense conversation that has the safety of your car and usually a good bit of money riding on it. If the mechanic sees that you have done your research and understand somewhat the issues, he/she will be more engaged and may spend more time communicating. These cars are really solid. +Auto Amateur the 991 is a nice nice car, no doubt. In 2014 we were lucky enough to get a 911 S from a dealer that was a 2012 with PDK. The 'super' sport mode (like race track mode) is hard to get used to. The engine is always up at the very highest RPMS. I found driving the car in just sport mode worked just fine. The car felt too automatic for me with PDK and very large, even though it isn't. It has a very different feel to it. I like the smaller feel of the older 911s. I thought no that's why I would go for a 997 or 996 over a 991. I am not sure I am explaining this well. I would be interested in riding or driving a 911 Turbo in the 911 line, but I have to say, I am not sure how I feel about the super new Porsches. I would like to experience them again. Heidi.

Heidi and Franny's Garage hi Heidi!! That's interesting for sure. I had a similar experience when I test drove a 991 Carrera S with the same sport mode. The high revs were too much, not fun at all for more than a few minutes. You're absolutely right about the feel of the drive on the road. I love the feel in terms of the slightly bigger cabin and lower seats (I'm 6ft 6in!). But the feel of the road and the driving experience itself is very different. I prefer my 996 C4 over the 991 in that regard. I can feel the road, it's much more engaging that the 991. I'm just a sucker for the more luxurious and comfortable feel of that new cabin and seat... 🤣

Hi Heidi and Franny, I've been a subscriber for about 6 months now and have enjoyed your videos. I was particularly interested in this video about the 2004 Turbo since I just came across a 2002 Turbo for sale that I am interested in possibly purchasing. I am in the market for a 911 of some type, after a long absence from owning a 911. The turbo I found also has tons of options, 40K miles, full service history, and very clean from the photos I've seen of the car. I am meeting the owner this week to see it in person and would like to know if there is anything that I should be focused on. I just watched your video and it had some great advice such as the clutch leak, rear wing hydraulics, power steering pump noise, and front diff leaking through the case(that's a big one). I do plan on having a PPI done of course, should I decide to make an offer. Anyway, any other words of advice would be appreciated from an old time 911 owner/fan! Thanks, Mario

If it is a cab, then make sure the top is going up and down properly. There are a number of elastic cords that poop out over time and can cause the top to not settle in correctly. That front air-dam is a bit expensive, but also a ware item. Make sure the radiators aren't weeping. You can spray them with a bit of water when they are warm and smell for dried coolant. Grab all the radiator hoses and make sure they fee pliable. Watch the idle when the car is completely up to temp. If it is hunting or oscillates it could be intake (vacuum leaks) or a bad mass air flow sensor. vacuum leaks are pretty common. Have them check the top of the shock towers up front. They can go soft. Beyond that, the obvious - look for wet/moist under the car anywhere. Check CV booties. Looks for signs of bad repairs or neglect/abuse under the car. Check the paint and body work carefully. It is one of the most expensive things to get corrected. Tires of course... You replace rears every time and fronts every other time. Looks for all the tools and accessories, NAV CDs, etc. That is about all I can think of fo now... Good luck!! I hope it pans out well :) Let us know how it goes, Franny

Thank you sooo much! I"m looking at coupes' so no Cab ropes! :-) I actually found two Turbos locally to look at, I just found an 2003, X50 this evening and I'm looking at it tomorrow. The other 2002 Ill be looking at it later this week. I'm really excited about the X50, it's all black and a local car. Having previously been a 911 air-cooled owner, I would have never thought about some of your suggestions that are specific to water cooled models like radiators weeping/cooling system items. Also, the top of the shock towers up front and the tools and accessories. I've wrenched and built a few cars and trucks, but never worked on a Porsche Turbo. My air-cooled 911's didn't have water cooling obviously, so checking the radiators is something I hadn't thought about! If one of these looks like a keeper, I'll try to make a deal and have a proper PPI done. There are numerous Porsche specific shops here in silicon valley for PPI's. Thanks again and I'll certainly let you know what I find!

@mariodesmo 6 лет назад
I hear you on mods; stay away from mod'ed cars! I'm an engineer and very particular about being in spec! Well, I viewing the cars and it was certainly interesting as always, when looking at used cars for sale. I viewed two cars, both are 6 speed coupes, one is a Gray(same as yours) 2002, and the other a Black 2003. Both are six speed manual, and both have had a new clutch and flywheel replaced recently. First Car Pros: 2002 Turbo, Seal Gray, 48K miles The first car shows very well. It has beautiful paint and straight bodywork, no repairs detected. It is obvious that this car has been well taken care of. The car is for sale by a small time dealer, a retired engineer like myself, who’s become a “dealer” of sorts in his retirement to stay busy. He told me how he’s always loved cars and this was a natural way for him to remain active in something he loves. He sells one car at a time, usually about 3-4 cars a month. You know how everyone has a story, and that’s his . Anyway, he purchased the vehicle from the 2nd owner who owned the car for 8 years. The car is originally from California, and had a new clutch installed 4000 miles ago. I read the paperwork, it’s all there, regular servicing at Porsche shops, per dealer/factory recommendations. I found him to seem very truthful about the car and its’ past history. I investigated the car’s history (Carfax/VIN check, etc) before going there. I already knew everything that he told me, so I don’t believe he held back anything. He provided all the dealer service/CarFax/VIN records, etc. He seemed to be very honest to me. He was very professional and we even talked about working as engineers at this time in human history and the human advancements we worked on. Anyway, back to the car! The engine is CLEAN, top to bottom, I think you could eat off the engine bottom! All hoses/vacuum lines, connectors/wiring look great, no leaks of any kind detected, anywhere. All rubber/plastic hoses, belts, connectors, etc, look like new. The car has a thorough and complete and lengthy set of service records from the very minor (bulbs replaced) to new clutch being the most significant repair. The interior looks like new, and has only had the stereo replaced with a new Pioneer in-dash, double-DIN, Nav/all-things unit, professionally installed of course. This is a beautiful car, but Non X-50! Standard 415HP Turbo. First Car Cons: There are only a few things that I found: 1 - The rear spoiler does not operate, the hydraulic units are leaking. Obviously they need to be replaced. 2 - The engine started right up but it had what could be very slight amount of cam chain noise/ticking sound, VERY lightly. I could not tell if it was simply from a cool engine starting up and hearing mechanical sounds until it warms fully or actual cam chain noise. I didn’t drive it, only started it in the driveway, rev’ed it a bit, and let it idle. The sound was there only at idle… I’ve heard cam chain/tensioner noise before many times. I wonder if this could be cam chains/tensioner/guides, or could it be the turbos starting up??? I think it will require a visual inspection to confirm. But there is a slight running/ticking sound there, consistent with chain noise. It goes way as you rev the engine a bit, to say 2000RPM. ??? 3 - The right-rear wheel has a very small bit of curb rash, about 3 inches along the rim lip, that’s been touched up. I didn’t see it until the owner/dealer pointed it out to me. I don’t like the rim design anyway and would probably change them out. 4 - The driver’s seat seemed to not slide back as far as other cars I’ve sat in. My legs had a slight bend at the knee with the seat all the way back. In the 2002, I definitely was not as far back as other cars. I sat in the 2003 X50 just an hour later, and I had plenty of room there. Second Car X50 Pros: 2002 Black/Black, X50, all original except for wheels. 38K miles. This car is also at a locally well known long-time dealer, that specialized in performance euro cars. The engine started up and this one was ABSOLUTELY QUIET. Not a single tick, knock, click, or any kind of noise as it started up and idled smoothly and quietly. It was perfect with no mechanical sounds whatsoever. The interior is in very good shape, like new. I believe this car was well taken care of as evidenced by a long list of minor and major services performed by Porsche dealers throughout its’ life. I also have the VIN Check/Carfax on this car. This engine is also very clean all over, no leaks of any kind detetected. The car also has a brand new clutch that was just installed, along with new brake rotors and pads. All fluids were recently flushed as well. The seat slide all the way back and felt perfect for my 6 foot, 2 inch, 185 lb. size. The engine compartment looked very clean and like new as you would expect with a 38K mile car. All hoses/wires/connectors, etc. were like new, no leaks, no visible wear/damage underneath either. The front air dam had a few small scratches/marks from driveways and curbs on the bottom of the lip, but nothing bad looking from above. The rear spoiler works perfectly, like new. Everything worked like new, as expected. Second Car X50 Cons: This second car is well equipped, has very shiny black paint BUT, it has had minor accident damage(per Carfax) on the passenger-side rear quarter panel. You can see a less than perfect repair with a few tiny sand marks under the paint if you look closely at the right spot/angle. The dealer pointed this out to me. Unfortunately the paint is not up to par with the mechanical condition of this car. The paint can be easily corrected but It needs to be color sanded, possibly re-painted in the damaged area, and polished out properly. Then there is the history on this car of being in an accident… Impacts value not being original paint, accident free… As noted above it has aftermarket (HRE?) wheels but I don’t like the design. Damn! It also has “smoke” colored taillights to match the all black paint of the car. I don’t like that either but those can be easily replaced. Well, that’s about it on these two cars, sorry for the long detailed report but I hope you can get an idea of these cars’ condition. Does either one sway you one way or the other? I’d really like the X50 but the paint needs to be corrected. The first car is one I could see myself in but the mechanical noises at start up need to be investigated by a Porsche expert mechanic… Thanks!
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 6 лет назад
+mariodesmo ok. Lots of stuff. This is opinion. Black is really hard to keep clean. It pops when it does, but that would be one reason why we might not get it. Secondly, the paint. Will the accident fix piss you off or are you okay with it? What if you want to show the car? Last of all, it's a bit unusual that the engine is so quiet. The Mezger engines aren't quiet. You should have the one you want inspected, but I am hoping the gray one's engine is not a show stopper. The wing will need to be fixed if you got with gray. It is a common problem. Just not simple to fix. Also, I like the car with the best maintenance records. Engineers can be very pedantic. That's a good thing. During the PPI, make sure the car boosts to 1.0 bar. We bought our car with 48 K miles. We have had to replace the mass airflow sensor, the radiators, we replaced radiators hoses (it's about time), and the belt... Franny has helped me write this. She might have more. But I think that's it. Good luck. No used car is perfect. I always add 3K dollars to every car that is used. May be old tires, your wing, maybe other little fixes. The car is always 3 to 5 k dollars more than what you expect to pay. Now that I use that rule, it has really helped me. Franny says wet on the bottom of the car is bad. Get the PPI done on a dry day... that's it. Good luck. Hope it works out. Keep us posted. Heidi

And weren't they on the racing cars too? The lights are fine (and the work really well - try driving a 308 at night!) and you don't notice them after a week. I think it is getting pretty cool to own a 996TT. Like you are a bit hipper and really get why these cars are so much fun! I'll have to check out your channel :) Franny

I love the 996tt, but comparing it to a new Porsche isn't really fair. The modern ones have much higher NVH/interior quality, even if performance is similar. The price isn't comparable unless you account for inflation. Having said that, for $50k you can get a well cared for non-X50 996tt, and for that kind of money you would be hard pressed to find a better all around vehicle that offers same quality/fit/finish and performance level. Not to mention that with a few modifications the Metzger can make insane power. Reliably. People sometimes compare the 911tt to the GTR since they are both turbo and AWD "super cars," but when it comes to reliability, especially modified, Porsche wins hand down. Ever. Single. Time. It is really an amazing car for what they are selling for.

Really enjoyed this overview. I kinda want one now... I am one of the people who isn't a fan of the 996 headlights, but to have a stick turbo with the turbo spoiler forgives a lot at least for me. I enjoy my 991.1 CS Cab but suspect I would find the turbo more engaging and fun to drive. Still like the whale tales of old in prior generations. Which is more fun to drive between the 2?

Between the 3.2 and the Turbo? Well, Heidi would be solidly in the Turbo camp, but I think for general around town, I like the 3.2. The Turbo is great, and fast, but it is more of a GT car and is zero to jail in like 10sec. The 3.2 makes you work a bit more for it and make a great sound doing it. It doesn't handle as well, and is not very fast, but it is more of a sense of occasion. A bit like the difference between the 996 and the 991.2 ;). Check out a 993 or 964 as well... The 993 is super sweet and really the best of all worlds. Franny

+David Oppy I have never been in a 991, but have heard they are ridiculously fast. My guess is our Turbo would probably feel slow compared to that kind of crazy power. I am not a fan of maintenance. The older the car, the more things have to be sorted and maintained. If you are okay with that, the older car will get you attention from a different set of car enthusiasts. Plus, each ride or drive have its own benefits. I guess we need a video on that... Heidi

Heidi - thanks for the reply. Did you mean the 918 super car or the 991 turbo/turbo s as a comparison? The 991.1 Carrera S (my version which has about 400hp) will reach 0-60 in around 4 seconds but I bet your 996 will do it with more drama. I have driven the 991 Turbo S (2016 model) and it was insane. 2.8 to 60. Amazing. Your turbo also hold's it's power better at altitude which I wish I had here in the Rockies.

+David Oppy I misread your comment. I thought you had a 991 Turbo. I have driven a 991 Carrera S. yes, our Turbo is faster. Ours is 0 to 60 in four and 0 to 100 in 8. I have never been in a 918 either. Hopefully someday! Where do you live? Heidi
