Lucky man is Leno. Closest I've ever been to a 911 was when I did a project car back in the early 80's. A sleeper, beaten up body of a VW with a Porsche engine in the bay. Cost me $5,000 for the engine and then a beefed up clutch cost me some more + other stuff but I was never beaten at the lights, ever. Sent it to car heaven 6 years later, as it was thrashing itself to death, by putting a brick on the accelerator and slamming it into 1st and driving it off a cliff. No one else deserved it.

this is true most manufacturers have picked it up but it has been bashed for years from pretty much ANYONE who's anything not honda for vtec being complicated or not dependable its just funny to see other companies now using it in just about everything they make

He also said the turbo forces more fuel into the cylinders! A more complete answer would have been that it forces more AIR into the cylinder via compression (and its associated fuel increase) vs. the air normally entering at atmospheric pressure

Never had anything posher than an MX5, but is there any better feeling than doing toe and heel braking with double de-clutch changes into a corner? You control the balance of the car. I ran a Triumph Spitfire with knackered synchromesh. You had to work hard and you weren't going fast, but you really felt like you were driving it. Best car ever? 850 mini pickup. Flat out everywhere even when all four wheels were in the air.Like Paddy Hopkirk said "never lift off".Good advice , won the Monte Carlo rally. Not in an 850, although I wouldn't bet against it.

Agreed. I hope the owner didn't pay too much to have all those rotary holograms burned in to his paint. There are just way too many hacks out there who don't know what they're doing, and it's a shame they're allowed to touch beautiful cars like this. Thanks again Jay, for a lovely video about an astonishingly brutal yet delicate machine. One that I can only dream of driving someday.

You said it wrong Jay. The turbo forces more air in to the engine. Then the car's fuel management system (usually just the ECU(car's computer)) will correct the air fuel ratio by adding more fuel, usually by increasing the pulse width of the trigger signal sent to the fuel injectors.

Hey there slspg....For years I wanted a 911 ( air cooled model ) & 2 years ago I bought one, a 1983 SC convertible, what a car, 32 yrs old & still kicks ass, I've had many cars....BMW, Mazda, Toyota, Subaru STI, but the Porsche is something else ( words can describe it ) if you can just do it ( you want regret it my friend ) Good luck & happy motoring !

+Liv Z It uses oil pressure to spin the turbine which sucks exhaust gases in and compresses the air and sends it in the intake which in turn needs more fuel.. it doesn't send fuel in.It sends more air in which in turn needs more fuel for correct air\fuel mixture.

EJK k sorry, oil pressure has nothing to do with it. and it doesnt suck exhaust in at all. exhaust is pushed in and turns the turbine, then that exhaust flows out through the exhaust pipes.

911 gt2 is a proper supercar. I love how Porsche understands that a 6 speed gear box leaves the driver feeling more connected to the car and is a lot more fun and challenging to drive.

Stability control. PDK, rev limiting, rev matching, adaptive steering, anti-lock brakes...I know a lot of "manly men" who came up through the double-clutching, heel/toe ranks who are addicted to those hard learned skills. Don't blame them a bit for their feelings. But if you ask a few pro-race drivers, I think they'll tell you, the more things you do NOT have to think about out there in traffic, the faster you can go and the longer you can last. Modern cars are amazing, but not one of them turns an average driver into a competitive racer. That takes seat time, training, and some natural ability. Period.

Steven Counts no, it's a technical fact. They measured the pollutant index in a polluted area against the output from the exhaust and found that in many cases the exhaust gas had less particulates and harmful gases in it then the air that went in. It's nothing new though, Porsche have made other cars in the past where the air coming out of the exhaust is cleaner than the air that goes in, as demonstrated on Top Gear in the early 2000s by Jeremy Clarkson.

Jay, about the cat converters, you can extract bit more power without them but better yet is to get high flow metal substrate ones. Same goes for the exhaust especially when you increase the power, factory exhaust has chambers, baffles etc so straight through mufflers and mandrel bent piping will help. With stock power sometimes better exhaust will hurt the power cause of not enough back pressure.

I recently drove my uncles 911 996 turbo, they drive unlike any other car. The awd system is amazing in them, it will tear thru first and second in a blink of an eye. I only hope one day i can afford a toy like this!

next time you ask a porsche tech to come in ; make sure he knows his cars. i mean not knowing the power on a GT3 .......how can you work in a car company and not even know the specs of the best cars you make; its not a fucking coxter.. its a GT3 and a GT2... lame ! id be the head of Porsche id have a talk with that guy.. !! carbon fiber brakes ... i'm still laughing .... 1/2and hour to explaiin a stupid launch control... wow .. i mean he is actually a tech ? he seems to know absolutly nothing about that car. and the short awnser for does racing gas / avgas help the performance ? the awnser is "NO". unless you get a full remap. knock sensors lets the engine know when or if to lower ingition timing but does not detect fuel quality ; hence does not "up" the ingnition timing with racing gas.

Actually Greg that's not true. Even on my WRC Edition GT4 the fuel maps and ignition timing are setup for 106 octane gas. But depending the readout from the knock sensor and other factors it'll pull back on the timing till it feels its at a safe level. It even has a limp mode where it pulls all timing just so you can still limp it home if you have an issue. BTW Please don't confuse GT4 with the Porsches shown here. I, unfortunately, do not yet own a Porsche.

I am an actual Porsche technician, and I also found a lot of the shit on this video cringe-worthy. People need to understand that PCCB stands for Porsche CERAMIC COMPOSITE Brakes, there is no fucking "carbon fiber" in the things. Also Andy Cherry sucks, everyone hates that arrogant jackass, wow you talked to Hurley Haywood, I'm really impressed. If I spend enough money at Brumos I'm sure I can talk to him too.

Well if you managed to get let's imagine 130 octane ( its only to say anything made above 106 l then your timing will not self adjust to get more with the better octane. Hence if mapped on sp102 as in Germany it will not make more power on sp105 unless remaped. Plain ans simple. Its map to a max you excede that max it will not adjust above that limit it is mapped on.

If you listen to a German say Porsche it will sound exactly the way Google translate says it in the native langaue. There is plenty of documentation besides Google translate that suggests PorschA 'translate.google.com/#de/en/Porsche

Yes, actually I do say Audi in German, so does pretty much everyone else. Asking Americans to pronounce BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke) as BMV is asking far more than Pronouncing Porsche correctly.

Just about my favorite car. I have a video of me in a turbo going 19 mph to 41 mph in 1 sec. This is the first car I drove that I thought I needed paddle shifting so I could keep my hands on the wheel at all time. I love porsche turbo

Tech guy said it had a full titanium exhaust but in fact it's only the rear section and tailpipes.

Great video...some of the details were inaccurate but overall very helpful. I have never seen a traction control vs no TC stop light take off in the GT2 before nor anyone burn the tires, thanks Jay, you are the man (a former 997.1 Turbo owner who is considering the 2008 GT2 as my next Porsche (Btw they are between $175K - $200K now.)

Being the same age as Jay I too prefer analog gauges over digital. Young guys enjoy the digital. Same with the shifter vs the paddle.

Martin Sage not all young people perfer digital gauges. im not that young but, im under 30. i perfer analog gauges aswell as having all 3 pedals in a car. a dual clutch is faster but a true manual transmission is alot more involving and alot more fun. it makes me upset that manufacturers are doing away with manuals in favor of paddle shifters. i think all cars should be manual but, people are too lazy and dont pay enough attention when they drive.

Jay, I have the outmost respect for you. You deffenetely have every Man's dream Garage. I wish someday I could get a tour with my Daughters. I use to work for a local LA Shop named RPS Automotive, the owner of the shop was Rick Norris, Rick and his wife Penny threated me as if I was their own son. Rick thought me allot about working on Porches, anyways Porches were Ricks life and I learned to love those beautiful machines myselff. Anyway I love your show and love this Porche a lot!
