Porsche 914 How to Install LED Headlights and How to Aim Them

The flashlight on my phone seemed about as bright as my old school headlights...so I opened my eyes to LEDs. Links to the bulbs below. This video covers the simple installation and an overview of how to aim your headlights...even old school ones. As always, please follow local laws...and remember, I'm just an amateur mechanic and no video can replace professional experience ;). So use this info at your own risk. Or safety. Don't you just love disclaimers?
Here are the links from 914 Rubber. They sell the bulbs and the globes separately, but can package a kit for ya.

Thanks for this! I just finished restoring my 914 and the alignment was off in orbit somewhere. I also have my finger hovering over the order button at 914rubber!

This was an excellent resource. However, every one of my trim ring screws was totally rusted and completely stripped. The screws ordered were incorrect. I ended up going to the hardware store and got some speed nut clips, only four bucks. The old bulbs were so bad I didn't even feel safe at night. With these I do not feel invisible. The brightness is a vast improvement. I highly recommend this for your 914, unless you want to go for the bar of light all the way across the frunk.

Thanks you do a great job with videos !!! These are great cars to work on simple and most parts are easy to get and inexpensive. It's not like your Porsche Dealer wants a 914 taking up a service bay.

Great series. I had to learn all of this stuff from a Chilton's and a Haynes back in the 80s. I really could have used that headlight upgrade, though...

One of the first things we did to our 914 was to upgrade the bulbs from 914 Rubber. They work great!

Hi Ian! I performed the upgrade and was curious if you found the LED inserts to be direction sensitive when installed into the bulb housing as I have. They can be installed in two positions and cast light very different. I also noticed the gauge high beam indicator light won’t illuminate after the upgrade. Would the only way to fix that be a load resistor somewhere in the circuit? Thanks for all the great videos and content!

@@IanKarr I contacted 914Rubber and they noted that the chrome “hood” inside the led bulb needs to face down to cast light correctly which was my orientation issue. I’ll check the bulb as you noted to see if that is my other issue. Thanks!

Hey Ian...finally getting down to some improvements on my 74 1.8L. I noticed the bulbs and lens bundle doesn't appear to be available anymore (on your link) however the bulbs and housing are both available. Is the bundle simply those two items together or are there any other items that the bundle contained I'd want to pick up to recreate the plug-and-play setup? Thank you so much for this channel!

Do you have a video showing how to adjust the gaps on the lids? I see too many 914s with the light lids really off on the gaps.

@@IanKarr Thank you for posting. yers, while it makes a small reference it's not a detailed instruction on hos to adjust the gap. Do you not plan to have one dedicated to adjusting the gap. The FB group was commenting on how they would benefit from it as it's a common problem among owners.

@@FernandoMartinez-pd5ib Hi Fernando. It's actually pretty basic. Those two brackets are really the only ways to adjust the gaps. What I'd do is first loosen the brackets (not too loose, just loose enough to be movable), remove the actuating rod off the pin, and with the light in the down position (with the cover on), orient the unit so the gaps are to your liking. Then just snug up the bolts on the brackets and put the pushrod back on. If it doesn't go back easily you may have to loosen the bracket on the motor side of the push rod and rotate it a bit so the pushrod goes on. Make sense?

HI , do you know if those lights are still available because they look much more the original ones versus all we see on Amazon or AliExpress. What brand is it and o you have a link . On my 914 i 've also the fog lamps is it the same conversion? Best Regs and thks for the video

I used the kit from 914rubber.com. My fog lamps are still incandescent.

0:36 The Frunk?!!!! ROFL I bought my 914 January 10th 1984. I had it for nine years. The 914 is my favorite car. I've never , ever heard the term Frunk. So shall it be called from this day forward. I replaced the stock headlights with Ciebie Bobi headlights

I was surprised that when you removed the old headlights that they were still a standard seal beam and had never been upgraded to a quartz halagen or iodine bulb as that was a upgrade in the 70’s. Will consider the LED’s

My car is very original and mostly unmolested, so I was pleasantly surprised to see the original sealed beams. Definitely keeping them in storage.
