The '74 LE is looking more like a car every day. In this episode you'll see how to test the headlight motors, assemble the mechanism, install it in the car, check the gaps, adjust the stops, and fit with an LED bulb.

Nice video! I enjoy seeing someone actually "performing " a restoration, rather than just showcasing the final product. Keep up the good work !

So many new parts! I remember refurbishing or completely remaking nearly the whole headlight assembly when a truck backed into our driver side light back in 1987. Couldn't find parts anywhere.

Yep. And really easy now that 914Rubber bundles it all in a kit!

Just want to say, you're doing an awesome job (IMO). I'm not a Porsche guy(I'm resto-custom restoring a '74 Super Beetle), but I like to watch your videos for tips on how to do a lot of this work

Thanks, John. Very cool that you're finding these videos helpful. Good luck with your super beetle. Those are awesome cars.

@@IanKarr Nope, I did just fine. I'm subscribed and have been referencing a few things here and there. This is my second 914 - a factory black 2.0. My first was a '75 Ancona Blue 2.0... sadly, she succumbed to flames from the classic fuel line recall.

@@IanKarr I absolutely was. I was driving and thought, "hmmm, smells like cookies." Braked for a stop light and the fuel pooled up underneath and it went south from there. Sad day for the '75, but the '73 is infinitely better. No hell hole, no rust, racing suspension, lower miles... on and on. I got a cream puff that just needs a good paint job.

Thanks. My right headlight got smashed and in the 22 years it set outside, much got covered in dirt and rusted. I’m going to have to replace a bunch of stuff on this. I have the front suspension off and have had the auxiliary carrier powder coated by a pro. I’m about ready to buy a stove on Craig’s list and powder coat all the smaller parts - which should fit in a full-sized oven. Going to order front Konis today.

Thanks Ian , I never knew how to adjust my eyebrows. Mine are a little off. Should just need a little tweak !
@IanKarr
@IanKarr 3 года назад
Happy to help! The annoying thing is that the brows have very little room for adjustment. It's all done in those bucket pivot brackets. If the gap between the painted headlight lid and the brow is too tight, make sure that the long edge of the brow is over and in front of the metal lip.
@kevinclark2642
@kevinclark2642 3 года назад
Great video as always. At about 8:47 you mention the stop adjustment screw. Is that for how far the light comes down? One of mine goes a little low and doesn't line up flush with the hood. Hoping to rectify that.

Your preview pane completely obscured the hat. :D What do you use for the outboard screws on the surround and the cover? I wound up using an offset ratcheting screwdriver thingie with interchangeable bits. The space is really tight in there!
@IanKarr
@IanKarr 3 года назад
Ha! thanks for the heads up (or should I say "hats up"?). Will move the preview. Yeah, that space is super tight. I found if I put a microfiber towel on the turn bucket and a long phillips head screwdriver, I had juuuust enough angle to turn the screw and get it tight. A ratcheting offset sounds cool.

Hey Ian - another great one. Are the brows really just pushed in like that? The 3 rubber stoppers (?) aren't persuaded or pushed through a little more substantially into the body?
@IanKarr
@IanKarr 3 года назад
Nope. They're held in by the rubber sides and the force against the metal front. Glad you liked the video!

Hi Ian, great video. Headlights worked fine for years but suddenly last year they both will go up but only the passenger one will go down. Any ideas on what the culprit may be? I replaced the little black can relays with the new ones from 914Rubber but that didn't solve the issue. Hopefully you have a few thoughts on this, thank you sir! James
@IanKarr
@IanKarr 2 года назад
Hi James. Check the grey or green wire (I can't remember which one controls "down") on the plastic junction box. Sounds like it may have worked its way off the spade...or maybe has a break in it. Good luck!

914 Rubber sells a lot of them. For the original stock parts no longer available, try posting a WTB on 914world.com

Is the spring supposed to be yellow zinc plated? Another great job. Just for fun, have you ever thought about using the white surrounds from the 914/6?
@IanKarr
@IanKarr 3 года назад
Thanks Jeff! Glad appreciate the kind review. Not sure about the yellow spring. I am sure that it's totally invisible...unless you're changing the headlight ;). I like the white surrounds. But since this is a bumblebee, I want to keep it as stock as possible. Tthe white ones were used on 4's as well...I think until early 73.
