To all the idiots commenting that he's "pussyfooting" around behind the wheel, this is a Type 935/78 of which exactly ONE exists in the entire world. All others are replicas. It's priceless and irreplaceable. He would be an absolute idiot if he trashed the car screwing around in a meaningless historics race. By the way, Ortelli has won LeMans with Porsche in 1998 driving the GT1 and he also won Sebring.

Marc Richardson agree, the car is priceless and ! You dont take anything to the race track unless you can throw it away, number one rule in racing , plus it's Spa, the only risk is actually passing a much slower 512BB on anyone of the ridiculously long straights... Too much to ask? another reason why some historic racing is BS, better to display the cars and take pictures, this is Akin to watching 60 yr old Olympians run the 100M in 12 seconds ..

+Mark J Um...no. Porsche only built two 935/78s. One was a developmental mule, the other was this car, the only one to see actual competition. It only saw four races during its day, winning once, then was promptly retired and stored away in Porsche's own collection. For all intent and purposes, this is the only one of its kind, factory-built and to see action on the race track. If you don't think the folks who own this car cautioned the driver to take it easy, then you don't know just how precious Porsche regards their own history. It may make for boring watching, but then historic races are primarily about the cars, their history, the heritage and NOT about actual in-the-moment competition. Because in the end, few will ever remember who actually won this race.

A lot of desktop racers, complaining that Ortelli isn't pushing. watch the dial "Benzindruck" second from the left, it's fuel pressure, it's clear that there's a serious fuel delivery problem at high engine loads, something that's lethal to any engine.
@x0druid0x
@x0druid0x 7 лет назад
yeah its like one of the fuel pumps is giving up the ghost under high boost, but yeah defiantly not good at all.
@x0druid0x
@x0druid0x 7 лет назад
u can also see the O2 sensor readout above the wheel going lean
@azynkron
@azynkron 7 лет назад
Well.. it's not lethal. It just stops. Cooling or oil pressure on the other hand damages the engine if they fail.
@spkprobe2

In watching it again , i do agree he had an issue, not engine , prior to slowing the car pushed out way pass the apex, twice , i guess he slowed due to an issue .... My apologies Ortelli ....
@BandanaBoris

pushing out of the apex is what the 935 excelled at. Took a very different approach of driving to move those beasts fast.

The driver is Stephane Ortelli... Winner of the Spa 24h. He won in a GT2 porsche against GT1 Ferrari's and Vipers... If you are a better driver and can show me a video where you win Le Mans or Daytona or an F1 race. You can call him shit if you want to... if not. Think before you write something ;-)

I was at Riverside Raceway on April 24, 1983, and saw Rolf Stommelen in a Porsche 935 "Moby Dick" car. I actually took a photo of him from my position in the infield. Later in the race, while I was in the "S's" I saw a huge dirt cloud in turn 9. Such a tragic loss. Someone was compelled to put a K-rail concrete block at the end of the back straight runoff. Mr. Stommelen died on impact. A very sad human tragedy.

I remember Rolf winning the Datona 24 hours in one of these cars. That's the type of track the 935 dominated, the closing speed on other cars was just ridiculous.

Ortelli seems willingly caring about the car which is an icon in its racing class,and I guess has quite a high rating as a vintage sport classic.His awareness deserves full back up.The BB driver is evidently willing to risk his car and its mechanics as well: we can see him daring and nearly loosing it on the curbs and possibly over...That's the only reason for a 935 to be overtaken by a BB: there would have been no story in actual racing.

Thanks for posting....have to laugh at comments from people that have obviously never driven a car of that stature, horsepower and notoriety...Stephane needed time to get comfortable in car...he didn't have anything to prove, he was playing it safe. I've seen a few of those one of a kind cars wadded up because the driver was half the talent and experience of Stephane but needed to prove how fast they were...its a different ball game when you're behind the wheel.

Moby Dick has a spool, making it understeer like crazy on cold tires. However, it was designed for the Le Mans, not for twisty tracks. Moby Dick wasn't a very successful racer and it looks like mr. Ortelli isn't trying to win a race here, he's obviousely trying to keep an extremely rare 800+ bhp monster in one piece while enjoying driving Moby Dick. Rare footage of an extraordinary Porsche, thumbs up!

Moby Dick was the fastest 935 at Le Mans by a coiuntry mile, qualifying 3rd, slower only than one of the factory 936's and an Alpine. It finished 8th as it encounetred problems on the way. On sheer pace it could have won outright. the car only ever raced 4 times and was very fast on every occasion. Winning by 7 laps at Silverstone
